PRACTICE TIPS #63: Put Practice in Your Schedule and Then Do It!
================================================================
We are just getting started with a new semester at Missouri Western, and my
students and I have talked about practice goals and set definite goals for
the semester.
Now that a few weeks have gone by, I see that many students are not
reaching their goals for weekly of practice hours.
What can pianists do to get the amount of practice they need to make good
progress?
I think that, especially for college students, there is a simple solution
that really works wonders:
1. Make a personal weekly schedule. Include classes, work, study time,
and all your other weekly activities.
2. Include in your schedule definite piano practice times. For
instance, if your practice goal is 6 hours per week, then just schedule
that 6 hours into your schedule.
3. Stick to your schedule!
Continually remind yourself that completing your scheduled practice time is
necessary for one of your most important college classes (Applied Piano
Lessons) and that your scheduled practice time is simply not available for
doing homework and assignments for other classes, chatting with your
friends, lounging around in the hall, or doing *anything* else, whether
important or unimportant.
When you were taking piano lessons "just for fun", then you just practice
whenever you felt like it and skip practicing whenever you wanted to. But
now that Piano Lessons are a college class--and for music majors, by far
the *the most important* of your college classes--you must take a more
systematic approach to practicing.
You'll be amazed how much more you accomplish when you approach practice
this way. You may also be surprised to discover how much more you enjoy
practicing.
So put piano practice in your schedule and then do it!

PRACTICE TIPS is by pianist, teacher, composer, and internet nerd
Brent Hugh. Brent knows about practicing mostly because he *does*
it, and in fact is toddling off to do some of it just about now . . .
Please remember that this tip is but a small itchy spot near the
elephant's right earlobe--it's not even close to the whole
elephant that is "how everyone in the whole world should practice
the piano".
