Performances will be in April and May 2010 and then
during=A0whole of the following school year and

All shows are to be played in the mornings, and there
will be some one or two week tours, so this is not suitable

=20
GENERAL IMPRESSION
Favorable.=A0 The play held our=A0 attention
throughout.=A0 =A0 Yes would recommend to a
friend.=A0=A0=A0Yes would see again.
=20
=20
THE TEXT
Confusion:=A0=A0=A0of the name of the man the
DAUGHTER seems to be identifying during her
"inventory":=A0 Dun?=A0
Doug?=A0=A0=A0And the man the FATHER is=20
speaking of: Dan.=A0 =A0=A0=A0I thought they
were two different guys.=A0
=A0=A0=A0(Lenka's versus Gordon's
pronunciation of the name)
=20
Unclear:=A0 whose flat this is, and why the FATHER
curses at the mess and feels the need to clean things
up.=A0=A0=A0Seems odd that he would want to clean
up if he is in such pressure (as he obviously is) to pack
and leave and go to meet this heavy guy (Mike?).=A0
=A0=A0=A0(Unless you've
contrived to have him=20
clean up in order for him to later discover the HOT tea cup
which reveals another person in the flat???)
=20
Unclear:=A0 exactly why the daughter has to be
chloroformed/ killed.=A0 =A0 all we know is that the
FATHER must pack and go meet some heavy guy for a=20
heavy meeting.=A0=A0=A0it's unclear why this
girl's presence here in this flat is supposed to be so
compromising.=A0=A0=A0why doesn't he just say
bye and bolt out the door?=A0 =A0=A0=A0I
mean,=A0 the FATHER has this girl who says that she's
his daughter and is obviously wanting to connect with
him---so why exactly is she such a threat to his current on
the lam situation?=A0 =A0 Did i miss something?
=20
=20
Note:=A0=A0=A0Daughter notices the woman in the
photo has "brown" hair.=A0=A0=A0Color
photo??=A0 Wouldn't photo be B&W if it is the
mother of the FATHER, who=20
reads as
60ish??=A0=A0=A0(though, I guess you could have
color photography in late 40s yes?)
=20
=20
Note:=A0=A0=A0Daughter in her inventory notes milk
on floor with "green" stuff on
it.=A0=A0=A0Bread would get green, but would old
spilled milk get green and mouldy?=20
=20
=A0=20
=20
=20
THE DIRECTION
Pacing seemed okay throughout.=A0 Though perhaps there
were some spots where it dragged, but dragged isn't the
right word-- you never started day=20
dreaming about your laundry,=A0 it was more like things
maybe slowed a bit and you wanted the character to get on to
the good stuff and make=20
discoveries.=A0 =A0 Maybe towards the end of the
DAUGHTER's inventory the pace could be picked up, prior
to FATHER's entrance,=A0=A0=A0though the=20
inventory is inherently interesting,=A0 and we are
trying to figure out (in a good way) who she is, and why
she's here, and so its all good.=A0 =A0
FATHER's
first bit on stage, that 5 minutes or so before discovery
of DAUGHTER could be tightened too=A0 (maybe).=A0=20
=20
Note:=A0 DAUGHTER reacts to the porno mag, but then her
subsequent reaction to the computer "web
history"=A0 porno photos seemed a bit
erfunctory/neutral.=A0 Maybe have her play it a bit
bigger so that we could more easily register her building
reaction to these increasingly lurid photos.=A0=20
=20
=20
Note:=A0 When the DAUGHTER screams "I'm your
daughter!!"=A0 I kinda wanted the FATHER to be more
stunned into shocked immobility for a couple=20
three beats there,=A0 maybe just stagger back and
freeze,=A0 let the moment sink in, let the audience
savor/register the moment--- before he starts with his NO NO
NO NOT TRUE frenzied pacing.=A0=20
=20
=20
Note:=A0 stage slap.=A0 The first one was okay, the
one just before the tie-up, which also was quite
real.=A0=A0=A0but the second one (when she
is tied to chair down center) seemed stagey.=A0 It
wasn't quite upstage---I could see both Gordon's
hands reaching forward.=A0 =A0 What about makin it
real and just smack her?=A0 =A0=20
=20
=20
Note:=A0=A0=A0It somehow seemed untrue/false (I
dunno)=A0 that the FATHER would untie the DAUGHTER (in
order for her to lie down on the floor to be=20
chloroformed)=A0 and that he would just let her stand
free like that talking to him for a good 5 minutes.=A0
=A0 How is it he suddenly trusts
her?=A0=A0=A0Why has he suddenly relinquished
control?=A0 =A0 To be safe/secure he would chloroform
her, then untie her, and (gently?=A0 lovingly?) lower her
to the floor?=A0 =A0 But having said this, it is a
nice little (warmly comic) scene between them, she wanting
to sip her tea, savor this (final?)=A0 moment with her
father, he wanting her to just lie down get gassed, like
he's scolding her to stop dawdling
just get ready for the school bus.=A0 =A0 I guess i
just thought it a bit incongruous that this
guy-under-stress=A0 (FATHER) would be smartly smacking
her one moment=A0=A0=A0and then coyly beckoning her
(with the dope rag)=A0 the next.=A0 =A0=20
=20
What about a warm two/three beat moment--=A0 as he's
untieing her!-- where they touch, and hold the touch, and
hold intimate eye contact, to give us=20
the sense they=A0 have crossed a threshold of
trust.=A0=20
=20
=20
=20
THE ACTING
Good performances from both.=A0 =A0=20
=20
Lenka especially during her pleas to the father immediately
after she is tied up, (from the chair to Gordon
downleft.)=A0=A0=A0Some real emotion/pain in the
quality of her voice there.=A0 A desperate wail!=A0
=A0 Gordon too, especially when he was downstage and
outfront,=A0 rehearsing his talk as a tough guy to=A0
(Mike?).=A0=20
=20
Both I thought could do more
with less.=A0=A0=A0To much extra unecessary
movement (maybe) during the DAUGHTER inventory because of
the recording=20
device.=A0=A0=A0maybe have the daughter record
into some kind of hands-free head-mic, or an alligator-clip
lapel mic, so that she doesn't have to constantly stop,
grab and pick up the hand held device, or juggle it with the
flashlight and the object.=A0=A0=A0THis would free
up her hands to handle the array of objects she has to pick
up/move around.=A0=A0=A0
=20
And Gordon too i felt could have minimized his
gestures/movements, and especially the constant shoving of
his sunglasses back up on his nose,=20
which did become distracting.=A0 =A0 (Maybe just
strap them back or get a pair that fits)=A0 =A0 And
the fussing with the hoody.=A0=20
=20
But these are small things and=A0 both had good rapport
with each other--you could see they were listening to each
other.=A0=A0=A0And you never had the=20
thought they were acting--both were constantly
believable.=A0 =A0 (in fact, that's the name of my
next rock band:=A0 The Constantly Believables)=A0=20
=20
=20

=20
=20
