Editor's Note: In the last issue's "Ask The Writer" section, I
advised against sending Word attachments because
reporters rarely open unsolicited attachments.
Abigail Obenchain added that Word attachments might
reveal previous versions/edits of the document. In fact, her
government ministry moved to PDF and online news
releases when they heard about other organizations
getting burned when someone did some excavating in their
Word files. Thanks, Abigail!
As for the radio show, it's a go! I will be the guest on
"Cover Story: on Wednesday, May 18 at 2 p.m. Eastern.
The Web address is http://www.webmasterradio.fm and the
station is called Webmaster Radio.
I'll be talking about timing in PR, e.g., embargoed press
releases, product launches, grand openings, etc. If you'd
like to share any tips or stories on PR timing, send them
my way and I'll see if I can include them. Also, I'll send you
a PDF of my special report "Mark Your Calendar: How to
Generate Story Ideas All Year" as a thank you.
Enjoy the issue.

Ten Cool Websites for PR Writers
"Writer's Digest" magazine recently published an article on
the 101 best Websites for writers. That article inspired me
to do a list of my own, especially since The PR Writer has
included some interesting links over the years.
Obviously, 101 links would be a bit overwhelming for an
e-newsletter, so I'm featuring 10 resources that are oldies
but goodies from the PR Writer's first year of publication:
- Resources for Connecting with Media -
1. NewsDirectory.Com
http://www.newsdirectory.com
This site provides links to a variety of media outlets.
Newspapers are organized by country, magazines by
subject and region, broadcast media by state and so on.
They also feature links to college publications, business
and daily newspapers and more.
2. ProfNet
http://www.profnet.com
This site connects reporters with experts from around the
world.
- PR & Marketing Information -
3. Bulldog Reporter's Media Relations HQ
http://www.infocomgroup.com
This site offers free e-newsletters, subscription-based print
newsletters, a Pitching Tip of the Week and a Skill of the
Week.
4. Clickz
http://www.clickz.com
An excellent online resource for interactive marketing.
5. O'Dwyer's
http://www.odwyerpr.com
You'll need one of a variety of subscription options in order
to access most areas on this site, but it has some great
resources and articles.
- Reference Materials -
6. Bartleby.com
http://www.bartleby.com
This is one of the most comprehensive reference
publishers on the Web.
7. Internet Public Library
http://www.ipl.org
Hosted by the University of Michigan's School of
Information, this online library has links to a variety of
publications around the Web.
8. Questia
http://www.questia.com
You will need a subscription for this site, which bills itself
as the world's largest online library, but the fees are pretty
reasonable. Plus, they have more than 2,500 e-books.
- Writing & Editing Advice -
9. The Slot
http://www.theslot.com
Bill Walsh has maintained this spot for copyeditors since
1995.
10. Useit.com: Jakob Nielson's Website
http://www.useit.com
Although other experts don't always agree with him,
Nielson has put together a comprehensive resource on
writing for the web. Be sure to check out the Alertbox
columns.
Happy writing!

Ask the Writer
Q: Have you ever heard of press releases with a salutation
and targeted to non-media types such as CEOs?
A: When a promotional piece has a salutation and is
targeting non-media, then I'd call it a sales letter or
direct mail piece. Use the pseudo-release format if you
think that will enhance your message. Maybe you should
test two different formats before distributing the piece
to your entire list. Good luck!
