Dear PH at Topica,
I don't have a lot to offer on the washing machine debate except to say people
in Southern California still use tumble dryers. It may however be linked
tangentially to something the UK body politic is trying to cleanse itself from.
It seems we have spent a long time here hearing three letters I.R.A.
Some recent headlines from our inquisitive press:
'War mistake because of linguistic confusion'
'dealing with the IRA meant we had no enemy beginning with these three letters,
I had to act', '"The name sounded like irate so I attacked" admits PM'. 'Iraqi's
consider changing name to move out of linguisitc firing line'.
IRA
IRAQ
IRAN
IRA-CIBLE: 'one of the parts of the soul dealing with irrational nature, such as
the power to hate and reject evil'
IRE: 'Anger, Wrath'
IRRA-TIONAL: 'a quantity in mathematics that cannot be expressed as an integer'
IR : 'Not, opposite of'
I wonder if we (in the PH sense) are trying to deal with that which 'makes' us
IRA-TE 'to grow angry, angry'.
Source of meanings: Chambers Dictionary of Etymology.
Best,
Elmer.
