During the summer session at Purdue (May to August), we'll be sending
out the OWL News every two weeks.
Writing Question of the Week
In the following sentence, what is the correct placement of
theapostrophe in "masters," if at all:
We place a high priority on attracting the very best
master’s/masters’/masters-level teacher candidates.
Thanks for your help!
Answer
Sorry for the delay in responding, but we finally got the question! Your
first instinct is correct: master's-level teacher candidates. Even
though candidates is plural, the degree signifies that you are a master
of something, hence, the master's degree and master's-level
candidate.--GT
The OWL Help Nest
Each week we'll publish a request for advice or information. If you wish
to contribute a response to the topic, please write to us at
owln-@owl.english.purdue.edu. Please let us know if you want us to
include your name and/or your email address when we publish your
response. The following week, we'll publish the best information and
advice that we receive in the newsletter. If you have a question for our
readers, please send it to us at owln-@owl.english.purdue.edu.
Last Week's Question:
How can I get the materials and resources on Sentence Clarity and
Combining that the OWL Lab workshop will be using on July 27? I will be
greatly obliged to get any and all resources on that topic. Thanks in
advance.
Answer
The materials and resources for our workshops are generally available
online as PowerPoints, Hypertext Workshops, and Handouts. The OWL
believes in making this information public, especially because our
actual in-lab workshops are open only to Purdue students.
Specifically for the workshop you're asking about (Sentence Clarity and
Combining), we suggest you check out the following links:
<http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/general/gl_sentclar.html>
<http://owl.english.purdue.edu/workshops/pp/sentence.PPT> (A PowerPoint,
so you must have the Microsoft software installed to use it--and FYI,
we're going to work to make PowerPoints available in alternate formats
as we continue to work on the OWL).
Next Week's Question
I have been teaching how to write a TOEFL essay for a few years now
using Barron's How to Prepare for the TOEFL Essay (2nd edition). I'm not
really crazy about the exercises in the book, but it seems to be the
only book on the topic and it does have 185 essay examples. I have used
hints from various on line info available, including Purdue, but I still
can't seem to get my students to write well enough. For example, one
thing I would like to teach them is to put the action of the sentence
into the verb. How do you make an exercise to practice this? Also, in
general I'm getting bored teaching this course so often. What can I do
to renew my interest and, of course, my students' interest?--Debbie
