Hello,
Here is the first installment of monthly book picks from the
Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Library. (a bit late but I will try to be
more consistant!) This first listing is to show how diverse the
collection here at the library is...again if anyone has any questions
please contact me (Debi) at inte-@pym.org
*To join the library, ask your meeting if they would sponsor a
membership. It is only $50 per year, there are no late fees, however
you are responsible for fees involved when a book is lost/damaged etc.
You are also responsible for return postage. If your meeting does not
care to sponsor a membership your family can also pay the yearly fee to

Pre-school/Early Elementary: Picture Book:
"Spirit Child": A Story of Nativity, translated from the Aztec, John
Bierhorst
The devil and the angel Gabriel come vividly to life in this story of
the young woman Mary and her spirit child born in Bethlehem.
Junior High/High School:
Fantasy
"The Dark is Rising": by Susan Cooper.
Life for Will Stanton is strangely wonderful as, for the twelve days of
Christmas, he is drawn through terror and delight. Superlative fantasy
of the eternal conflict between good and evil.
"Plain City": Virginia Hamilton.
Twelve year old Buhlaire, a "mixed" child who feels out of place in her
community, sturggles to unearth her past and her family history as she
gradually discovers more and more about her missing father.
"Stories from El Barrio": by Piri Thomas.
Piri Thomas gives young readers a vivid slice of the life in El
Barrio--a place wheere people face their problems with enery, ingenuity,
and love. He captures their spririt, their laughter and their hope.
"Real War Stories" (told in Comic Book format)

There are lots of people trying to sell you some very rosy pictures of
some truly deadly scenes. That happened to us once before (Viet Nam)
These things aren't easy to look at, that is why we made this comic
book...

How to solve the social problems YOU CHOOSE--and turn creative thinking

And last but not least, a video pick:
"One Million Postcards": Produced by the AFSC.
Two sisters who were deeply concerned about the suffering in Iraq and
decided to do something about it. Young people can make a difference by
putting their sense of compassion to work through grassroots activism.
