Margo, thanks for the link to the reviewi of Don Giovanni at Verbier. I
was lucky to remember enough Italian to absorb most of the review.
I'd like to mention, for anyone who might have miissed it, that the
reviewer wrote despite the impressive voices of Bryn Terfel (Don G) and Rene Pape
(Leporello), Thomas Quasthoff was the star of the show. (I wonder whoever
heard of the Commendatore walking off with the honors, and in such a
star-studded cast?)
The reviewer gives a capsule biolgraphy, briefly mentioning the almost
hopeless circumstances of Quasthoff's birth, and his miraculous progress to
super-stardom. He's a hero of humanity, says the writer.
There was also a concert of old popular favorites and an encore of "Danny
Boy" which captivated il pubblico Italiano. Bravissimo, il nostro eroe!
