Just a small aside as I have the same issue. Be sure it is licenced in another state and hase more than 7000 miles on the clock then you are home free and dry! And I don't think you need fuss with anything. Also watch out for the silly VIN issue as Enfield does not stamp a VIN on the frame that meets with current agreed up[on standards, so it's off to the CHP for verification!

I may live in Southern California but we do have roads other than Freeways.  Also, in trendy California the closer the gas gets to $5.00 the fewer SUVs are on the road.  There was an article in the paper about how the scooter shops are al sold out. 

IF the bike has 7,000 miles on it will I still need to change some of the smog setup to pass our stringent laws. 

Most of the work I can do myself as far as parts I'll just have do deal with that.  Many years ago I did ride a motorcycle from London to Scotland and back on the A and B roads it was a lot of fun.
