'PRINCE CASPIAN' TAKES THE THRONE

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" dethroned
"Iron Man" as ruler at the box office, pulling down
$56.6 million, according to estimates.

Disney's action sequel took in less domestically in
its opening weekend than "The Lion, The Witch and the
Wardrobe," which sold $65.6 million in North America
in its debut weekend in December 2005. "Caspian" raked
in $20.7 million overseas.

But Disney expects the PG-rated movie, based on the
C.S. Lewis fantasy series, to ride high through the
Memorial Day weekend. The first "Narnia" tale grossed
$745 million worldwide over its theatrical run.

"This is a film that we think is going to play all
summer long and it's got nothing but school holidays
in front of it," said Mark Zoradi, president of the
Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Group.

Disney is in pre-production on the third of the
series, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn
Treader," set for release in the summer of 2010.

Marvel Studios' "Iron Man" slipped to second place
after two weeks at #1 with $31.2 million, bringing its
domestic total to $222.5 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers,
said the flawed superhero flick is holding its appeal
better than "Spider-Man 3" did the previous May.

"'Iron Man' continues to hold very well," he said.
"It's definitely cutting into audiences across the
board."

The 20th Century Fox comedy "What Happens in Vegas,"
starring Cameron Diaz & Ashton Kutcher, came in third,
with $13.9 million in its second weekend. Its domestic
total reached $40.3 million, well above its $35
million budget.

"It's clearly the comedy, non-family movie in the
marketplace right now," said Chris Aronson, Fox SVP.

Warner's disappointing "Speed Racer" slowed to $7.6
million for fourth place, driving in $29.8 million
over two weeks.

The studio said it was not ready to call it game over
on the Wachowski brothers movie, which cost $120
million to make.

Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' VP of distribution, said
next weekend was "do or die" for the movie.

Overture Films' acclaimed drama, "The Visitor," crept
into 10th place at the box office with $687,000.

The distributor picked up the indie film, about a
professor who discovers a couple living in his
little-used New York apartment, at the Toronto Film
Festival for $1 million. It has grossed $3.4 million
so far.

"It's good to know that you don't have to have special
effects in your movie to make money," said Overture
Films' SVP Adam Keen.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,"
which received a ho-hum reaction at the Cannes Film
Festival Sunday, whips into theaters on Thursday.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. &
Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers.
Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "Narnia: Prince Caspian" @ $56.6 million.

02) "Iron Man" @ $31.2 million.

03) "What Happens in Vegas" @ $13.9 million.

04) "Speed Racer" @ $7.6 million.

05) "Baby Mama" @ $4.6 million.

06) "Made of Honor" @ $4.5 million.

07) "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" @ $2.5 million.

08) "Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo" @ $1.8 million.

09) "The Forbidden Kingdom" @ $1 million.

10) "The Visitor" @ $687,000.

MOORE: 'FAHRENHEIT 9/11' FOLLOW-UP

With his follow-up to "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore
wants to examine America as an empire, study its
standing since the Sept. 11 attacks and present
revelations to surprise audiences as much as the first
film did. But he doesn't want to make a sequel.
The documentary will be a broader chronicle than
"Fahrenheit 9/11," which took President Bush to task
over the terrorist attacks and the Iraq war. Moore
plans to keep details to himself, saying he regretted
talking too early about "Sicko." Health insurers were
able to mobilize against him.

Ellen DeGeneres was allegedly confronted by Portia De

her marriage intentions and forced her to set a date.
The couple are planning a lavish ceremony for friends

end of May, and her show doesn't start up again until
August. "That gives Ellen some much-needed time with
her new bride. They're discussing a honeymoon, but
Portia would be happy. Ellen is very happy too. All
her dreams are coming true."

SHEEN RECEIVES NOTRE DAME HONOR

The University of Notre Dame honored Martin Sheen
Sunday with its Laetare Medal for his humanitarian
work. The 67-year-old received the award during the
school's commencement. The award is Notre Dame's top
honor and is given to a Catholic "whose genius has
ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals
of the church, and enriched the heritage of humanity."
"While acting is what I do for a living, activism is
what I do to stay alive," Sheen told the crowd. Sheen
is best known for portraying President Josiah Bartlet,
a Notre Dame alumnus, on NBC's "The West Wing."
Provost Thomas Burish presented Sheen with a Notre
Dame jacket like one he wore in the final
episode of "The West Wing." Sheen describes himself as
a Catholic peace activist.

WEINSTEIN 2 TACKLE 'THE ALCHEMIST'

For 15 years, Hollywood tried & failed to transform
the best-selling novel "The Alchemist" to the silver
screen. Harvey Weinstein says he will produce Paulo
Coelho's fable. Laurence Fishburne will direct and
star as the title character. Shooting will start a
year from now. "The book is simple and spiritual, and
the screenplay will reflect that," Weinstein said. He
said screenwriters have tried to add bombast to the
tale. "That's not what the book is about," he said.
"It's not 'Genghis Khan.'" The book tells the story of
Santiago, a Spanish shepherd who dreams of finding a
treasure at the Egyptian pyramids. He embarks on his
quest, falls in love and learns life lessons along the
way. "The Alchemist" has sold 30 million copies since
it was published 20 years ago. Usually an executive
producer, Weinstein said he will personally produce
"The Alchemist." He did the same with "Shakespeare in
Love," which won 7 Academy Awards in 1999, including
best picture. The Weinstein name has been attached to
award-winning films like "Good Will Hunting." But
since Harvey & Bob left Miramax in 2005, they have yet

TIME WARNER 2 SPIN-OFF CABLE DIVISION

Time Warner will split off its cable business to focus
on network, entertainment & publishing operations. The
separation gets Time Warner out of media distribution.
Jeff Bewkes, CEO, said separating Time Warner Cable
will give both companies "greater strategic, financial
& operational flexibility." Cable operators have much
different capital needs than other media companies,
with demands for infrastructure & technology. Having
its own stock allows Time Warner Cable currency to use
in acquisitions. Time Warner said it will distribute
the dividend from Time Warner Cable to shareholders.
The split, expected to close in fourth quarter, must
receive a favorable ruling from IRS with approvals &
clearances. Time Warner Cable will fund the dividend
with its existing credit facility and a bridge loan.
Once Time Warner Cable is split off, Time Warner will
be an entertainment company centered on Warner Bros.
movie and TV production studio, Time Inc. magazine
group and a portfolio of cable networks that include
HBO, CNN, TBS and TNT. The splitoff calls for Time
Warner Cable to pay a total dividend of $10.27 per
share or $10.9 billion to shareholders, of which Time
Warner will receive $9.25 billion.

SONY GOLF BALL-SIZED SPEAKERS

The new speakers from Sony are tiny but deliver the
big, robust sound of a top-notch home-theater system.
The speakers, on sale in Japan next month, measure 1.7
inches on each side, Sony spokeswoman Eiko Sato said.
The system includes 5 golf ball-sized speakers as well
as a 17 inch tall box for the amplifier & subwoofer, a
feature for producing bass sounds. The Home Theater
System HT-IS100 will go on sale in North America and
Europe, but pricing and date aren't decided yet. The
technology for achieving this cannot be disclosed,
Sato said. The system connects to TVs, Blu-ray disc
recorders, Sony's PlayStation 3 and other gadgets,
according to Sony.

Well, I hope you like the ride. Below are some movies
worthy of my recommendation. Ask about them at your
video store or public library.

FOLLOW ME, BOYS! (1966)

Just an ordinary guy... but the people whose lives he
touched will remember him forever... and so will you!

Fred MacMurray is a devoted scoutmaster and a young
Kurt Russell joins his troop and shares his heart &
home when they need one another most.

STEPHEN KING'S GOLDEN YEARS (1991)

Explosion in a secret lab leaves old Harlan growing
younger. The government hunts the fugitive Harlan.

Some of Stephen King's best works have been adapted as
TV mini series. In addition to being a co-writer, King
appears on screen as a bus driver.

BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE (2002)

The US is notorious for its gun violence. Michael
Moore explores the roots of the bloodshed.

Reguardless of where you are on gun control, Michael
covers everything - from his own love of guns and NRA
membership to the nation of fear and its roots.

AN UNFINISHED LIFE (2005)

A woman and her daughter move in with her father
in-law. They learn to forgive & heal old wounds.

An estranged family torn apart by greif must learn to
love again over time. A farmhand/best friend, mauled
by a bear, shows them how to forgive and move on.
