'INDIANA' EARNS $56M IN FIRST 2 DAYS
Indiana Jones is still finding box office treasure.
Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the
Crystal Skull," the 4th. film in the series starring
Harrison Ford, earned $56 million in its first 2 days,
Paul Dergarabedian said.
After earning $25 million in its Thursday debut, the
Steven Spielberg-directed movie brought in another $31
million Friday.
"These are very solid numbers, no question about it.
The fact that earnings went up on the second day is a
good sign," Dergarabedian said. "Whether it's on pace
to beat "Pirates'" numbers from last Memorial Day
remains to be seen."
Last year, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"
set the record for a Memorial Day weekend opening,
earning $153 million including Thursday previews.
"Indiana Jones" will need a strong weekend finish to
top the year's biggest hit so far, "Iron Man," which
pulled in $98.6 million domestically in its first
weekend.
The film opened early Thursday in 4,260 theaters,
according to Media By Numbers.
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,"
the first film in 19 years about the
archaeologist-adventurer, premiered at Cannes Film
Festival.
http://www.mediabynumbers.com
'INDIANA' EARNS $311M WORLDWIDE
Indiana Jones 4 has more than recouped its big budget
with an estimated $311 million in global box office
sales through the long weekend.
Families went in droves to catch "Indiana Jones and
the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," starring Harrison
Ford as the whip-cracking archaeologist who took 19
years to return to the big screen.
Paramount Pictures estimated the action sequel made
$151.1 million in the U.S. and Canada from Thursday to
the holiday Monday and $160 million overseas.
It marked the second biggest Memorial Day weekend
opening ever, behind "Pirates of the Caribbean: At
World's End," which made $153 million domestically
from Thursday to Monday last year.
Nearly a third of the domestic audience was made up of
parents with their children, said Rob Moore, president
of Paramount Worldwide Distribution.
"Adults really drove this opening. This is one of
their favorite franchises and they couldn't wait to
take their kids with them," Moore said.
The film cost $185 million to make, even with the
principal talent - Ford, director Steven Spielberg and
writer George Lucas - deferring their usual fees.
The first 3 Indy movies raked in $1.2 billion
worldwide.
Marketing costs were undisclosed, but the latest
"Indiana Jones" received a major push from Paramount.
DVDs of the first movies were re-released, they aired
on TV days before opening and billboards sprung up.
The final trailer for the movie rolled before the
opening of Marvel Studios'"Iron Man," which was also
distributed by Paramount, 3 weeks earlier.
"It's been a pretty good month," Moore said. "We
started the month with 'Iron Man' and finished with
'Indiana Jones.'"
Other movies' receipts over the long weekend paled by
comparison.
Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian"
slashed its way to $28.6 million, for a total $96.7
million over 2 weeks. "Iron Man" locked up third with
$25.7 million in its third week for a total of $257.8
million.
Wachowski brothers' "Speed Racer," distributed by
Warner Bros., crawled to the finish line with $5.2
million for fifth, bringing its domestic total to
$37.4 million. It brought in $30 million overseas, and
had yet to be released in major markets France,
Russia, Japan and Australia.
The studio said it was not ready to wave the checkered
flag on the film, which cost $120 million to make.
"If I had my druthers I'd have it in theaters for
weeks and months to come," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner
Bros.' executive VP of distribution.
For the year so far, domestic movie revenues are down
more than 4% at $3.4 billion, with attendance off 7%.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Monday @ U.S. &
Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers.
Final figures will be released Tuesday.
01) "Indiana Jones 4" @ $126 million.
02) "Narnia: Prince Caspian" @ $28.6 million.
03) "Iron Man" @ $25.7 million.
04) "What Happens in Vegas" @ $11.2 million.
05) "Speed Racer" @ $5.2 million.
06) "Made of Honor" @ $4.2 million.
07) "Baby Mama" @ $4.2 million.
08) "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" @ $2.2 million.
09) "Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo" @ $1.2 million.
10) "The Visitor" @ $917,000.

Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, and Jim Broadbent
Director: Steven Spielberg Writer: George Lucas
The newest Indiana Jones adventure begins in the
desert Southwest in 1957 – height of the Cold War.
Indy barely escaped a scrape with Soviet agents.
Professor Jones has returned home to find things have
gone from bad to worse. His recent activities have
made him the object of suspicion. Indy meets young
Mutt, who carries a grudge and proposition: If he’ll
help Mutt on a mission, Indy could make one of the
most spectacular archaeological finds in history – the
Crystal Skull. Indy & Mutt quickly realize they are
not alone. Soviet agents are hot on the trail.
They must evade the Soviets, and, above all, stop the
Crystal Skull from falling into deadly hands.

"I can say that if you liked the other Indiana Jones
movies, you will like this one, and that if you did
not, there is no talking to you." - Chicago Sun-Times,
Roger Ebert

and money too, but what’s absent is any sense of
rediscovery..." - New York Times,

<> <> <> SHINING STAR <> <> <>
+===================================+
HELENA BONHAM CARTER
DOB: May 26, 1966 - Golders Green, London, England
This English actress is most recognized for her roles
in period films in which she is the quintessential
19th century repressed female who spends her life in
corsets. At the age of 13, Bonham Carter hired an
agent with some money that she had won in a poetry
contest. Bonham Carter’s first leading role was in the
film Lady Jane, and though she was an untrained
actress of 17, she won high praise from the critics.
Bonham Carter’s success lead to parts in films
including A Room with a View, Howard’s End, Hamlet and
Twelfth Night. Although Bonham Carter has achieved
great levels of success in her period pieces, she has
chosen not to be typecast. Playing an adulterous
art-dealer in Woody Allen’s, Mighty Aphrodite, and
co-starring opposite Brad Pitt in the 1999 film, Fight
Club, is evidence of that. Recently, she starred in
the film Big Fish.
NOTABLES:
Is close friends with Johnny Depp, who often works
with her husband, Tim Burton. In fact, Depp is the
godfather of her child with Burton, Billy Ray.
In 2005, her voice appeared in two stop-motion
animated films. They were Corpse Bride (2005) and
Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
(2005). Both films were nominated for the Academy
award for best animated film. The award went to
Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
Was cast as Bellatrix Lestrange after Helen McCrory
became pregnant, and would have been nearly full-term
when her scenes were shot. She returned to the role
for one scene in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood
Prince (2008), opposite McCrory as her sister Narcissa
Malfoy. Ironically, Carter was able to be in this
scene because it was scheduled to be filmed after she
gave birth to her own child.
QUOTABLES:
[On breast-feeding her baby]: People say, "You're
still breast-feeding, that's so generous". Generous,
no! It gives me boobs and it takes my thighs away!
It's sort of like natural liposuction. I'd carry on
breast-feeding for the rest of my life if I could.
He's very cool. Whatever Johnny does, there's
something cool about it. He's very hip. It's emotional
and vulnerable, too, which makes it touching. - on her
friend and colleague Johnny Depp.

COSBY SWEATERS WARN BY CLIFF HUXTABLE
Not everyone can be Dr. Cliff Huxtable, the dad that
Bill Cosby played on TV for 8 years. But for the right
price, you could dress like him this Father's Day.
Cosby's daughter, Evin, said her mother and father
were cleaning out a closet and came across a batch of
sweaters her dad wore when he played Huxtable on NBC's
"The Cosby Show" from 1984 to 1992.
"I pounced on these sweaters," she said, adding she
figured they could help a charity named for her
brother, Ennis, raise a substantial amount of money.
Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby Foundation, which
raises money to benefit educational programs, is named
in honor of Cosby's only son, who was murdered in Los
Angeles in 1997.
http://www.hellofriend.org
The auction is scheduled for June 2-12, with minimum
bids set at $5,000.
"The price of what some of these sweaters might sell
for could make a big difference in the lives of
thousands of children," said Evin Cosby.

REVIEW: NETFLIX MOVIES ON TV
It's the big horse race in the gadget market this
year: a box that brings Internet movie downloads to
the TV? Now, we have a tiny box that deserves to be a
winner. Roku Inc. introduced a black box that grabs
movies and TV shows from Netflix. There are couple of
other boxes on the market that do the same thing,
including the Apple TV.

'INDIANA JONES' & THE DIGITAL JUNGLE
In the lobby of Industrial Light and Magic, where
Darth Vader and Bobba Fett stand guard, Indiana Jones
almost seems out of place. The George Lucas' visual
effects company is a high-tech temple to everything
from the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park" to the talking
robots in "Transformers." The first 3 Indy films were
gritty, sweaty and tactile affairs, because everything
onscreen physically existed. That is not so in this
digital age where servers now replace sound stages.
Stephen Spielberg considered the old-school approach
but "We realized we could serve the story better by
using our digital tools."

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2008
Indy made his comeback, and Woody came back as usual.
Angelina showed off her baby bump, and Madonna sold
off her handbag. This year's Cannes Film Festival,
which ended Sunday, had plenty of celebrities to
please the star-watchers - but moviegoers were more
disappointed. There were few real favorites. And it
didn't help that Cannes' weather was rainy. As the
festival drew to a close, jury president Sean Penn
admitted he wished there had been more comedies.

Winkler, will be dedicated Aug. 19 along the Milwaukee
River. "Happy Days," which was set in Milwaukee, aired
from 1974 to 1984. Most of the show's stars are

SHEEN OPENS UP ABOUT SON CARLIE
Martin Sheen (67) became "fanatic" when his son
Charlie was using drugs. "When a life is at stake and
it's your child, you become fearless in a lot of ways.
I mean, you just become fanatic," the actor says in
AARP Magazine. "Nothing ever gets done unless it's
done by a fanatic." Sheen tells the magazine how he
intervened. "The only way I got to Charlie, frankly,
was because he'd skipped out of the hospital.
I had to pay the bill," Sheen says. "In paying the
bill, I got to see why he was in there. He'd consumed
an illegal substance; he was on probation. ... This
was a criminal matter. And so that was the wedge; that
was the leverage I had. That is what I took to the
court; that's what I took to the sheriff. It was the
only way I got him." The star battled alcoholism
himself. "I got sober through Catholicism, through my
faith," Sheen tells the magazine. "I only got involved
with AA when I was trying desperately to find a way to
help Charlie, because I didn't have any skills." Sheen
also talked about his career and politics, saying he
doesn't plan to run for public office. "I'm not
qualified," he says. "It's crossed my ego. I feel like
a public servant. I feel like a responsible citizen.
But I couldn't do it professionally. I don't have the
temperament."

WIFE SEEKS 2 DIVORCE BILL MURRAY
The wife of Bill Murray has filed for divorce after 11
years of marriage, alleging he abused her and is
addicted to marijuana and alcohol. Jennifer Butler
Murray filed May 12 in Charleston County. She owns a
home on Sullivans Island, S.C., where she lives with
their 4 children. The report alleges abandonment by
the former "Saturday Night Live" star. Bill Murray's
attorney, John McDougall, said the entertainer "is
deeply saddened by the breakup of his marriage." "He
and his wife made loving parents and are committed to
the best interests of their children," McDougall said.
The couple signed a prenuptial agreement, which was
filed with the divorce papers, before they married in
1997. As part of the agreement, both waived their
right to alimony or support. However, Murray agreed to
pay $7 million to his ex-wife within 60 days of a
final divorce decree. The complaint says he "travels
overseas where he engages in public and private
altercations and sexual liaisons." It also alleges he
physically abused her. Murray, of "Ghostbusters,"
"Caddyshack" & "Groundhog Day" fame, is a co-owner of
Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team.
DOUGLAS & WIFE DEDICATE LA PLAYGROUND
Kirk Douglas and his wife have dedicated their 400th
school playground - completing a decade-long effort to
give Los Angeles kids a place to frolic. The actor
(91) took a ride down a slide during the unveiling at
a Los Angeles elementary school. Douglas and his wife,
Anne, created a foundation that provided $8 million to
build or refurbish play areas in LA school district.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on hand and praised
Douglas and his wife for their efforts. The governor
and Douglas worked together in "The Villain" and have
remained friends for 3 decades.

decades of negotiating. "We are trying to think out of
the box in order to reach pragmatic results," AFTRA
president said. The dispute has its roots in the
50-year tradition of actors having the right to
consent to the use of clips. Permission was rarely
requested because performers would be guaranteed the
day-player wage, now $759. The Alliance of Motion
Picture and Television Producers have argued the
process needs to be streamlined. "The existing rules &
administrative burden created by those rules, prevents
the entire industry from developing a lawful clips
market," the alliance said. SAG highlighted the same
issue as one of the key points in its talks. SAG's
contract expires
June 30. Producers proposed to share revenue in lieu
of permission. SAG warned, "They could be edited,
mashed and morphed into anything, anywhere."

BORDERS RETURNS 2 WEB AFTER 7 YEARS
Borders is jumping back into online retailing with a
site designed to evoke the feeling of browsing at a
neighborhood bookstore. The launch comes months after
Borders announced it may put itself up for sale. Just
last week, Barnes & Noble confirmed it put together a
team to study the feasibility of a deal. Centerpiece
of the site is "The Magic Shelf." In addition to new
books, CDs and DVDs, it includes staff picks and a
"Picked For You" section. Borders will offer free
shipping on some orders. But Borders also offers free
shipping to its stores. Shoppers can redeem rewards
online — something they couldn't do on Amazon. The
site also will offer used, out-of-print and rare
titles. Borders' restructuring includes a fresh face
for its U.S. superstores. Borders is integrating the
digital world, making them places for downloading
e-books and burning CDs. In 2001, the second-largest
bookseller abandoned its net business, turning it over
to Amazon. Borders has said it expects Borders.com to
be profitable in 2009. Kiosks in stores will allow
shoppers to access wish lists. If something isn't in
the store, they'll be able to place an order.

COMCAST MAY SELL SOME SYSTEMS
Comcast is trying to sell 46 smaller cable systems
serving 400,000 to 500,000 subscribers as it seeks to
improve efficiency by shedding disparate operations.
The nation's largest cable TV operator could get
$3,000 to $4,500 per subscriber, prices would vary by
asset. Most of the cable systems are in 8 states -
Maine, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, Virginia,
Georgia, West Virginia and California, almost
one-fourth of them are in Maine. Comcast serves 14
towns in Maine and is looking to get out of 11. In
Maine, the logical buyer is Time Warner Cable, which
serves 85 percent of Maine, including areas
surrounding the 11 municipalities Comcast hopes to bow
out of. Comcast took over the Maine systems after it
acquired Susquehanna Communications in May 2006. It
already owned 30 percent of SusCom. When a cable
system is concentrated geographically, it is cheaper
to provide services. If the area also happens to be
more affluent, the company gets the added benefit of
higher revenue per household. After selling nearly 4
dozen systems, Comcast might buy other cable systems
closer to where it already has a substantial presence.
