Issue #201 ~ Happy Father's Day! Farewell Tim Russert!  goodso-@yahoo.com
 Jun 15, 2008 04:10 PDT

Hey Adventureland Friends:

Well, this week has been a real bummer from start to finish. The heavy rains & flooding has caused random sink holes. One of them is on my street.

Then ended the week with the passing of Tim Russert. It just seems so unreal to face an election without him. He leaves some big shoes to fill.

Now, for something more positive. In addition to the great men in our lives, we solute the finest work of Betsy Ross -- the USA Flag.

This is our free members only community hosted by Google. So far only one of you have joined. I hope to more of you join us.

Our Shining Star is the great Canadian and TV legend - Michael J. Fox. He was presented with a deploma from Dewey High School. Yes, the same school that Seavers attended on TV's "Growing Pains."

The Snack Bar features two Father's Day treats for Dad. Nope, their not grilling recipes. Dads & grills seem so old hat. You could add them to your cook-out.

Our Bookmark is considerably late but no less worth your effort. The 2008 Home Theater Catalog has been released. This is a home theater bible of sorts.

Blog Bytes are also late. I have having trouble with Bravenet early in the week. Among other information is the Student Oscar winners. See the complete list.

Finally, we have a Birthday annoucement. My Uncle Jack was born on Flag Day. He Shares June 14 with Marla Gibbs (1931) and Yasmine Bleeth (1968). Also born on this day is Donald Trump (1947).

Take time to add yourself to our Birthday Alarm today.

BLACK BEATS SANDLER WITH $60M WEEKEND

Jack Black's Po the panda outgunned Adam Sandler's Zo the hairdresser. Black's "Kung Fu Panda" pulled in $60 million to debut as the #1 movie, while Sandler's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" opened in second place with $40 million, according to estimates Sunday.

They combined to carry Hollywood to a big weekend. The top 12 films took in $172.4 million, up 32% from the same weekend last year when "Ocean's Thirteen" led with a $36.1 million opening.

DreamWorks Animation's "Panda" and Sony's "Zohan" bumped off the previous weekend leader, Warner Bros. "Sex and the City," which slipped to #4 with $21.3 million.

That was a steep 63% decline from its $56.8 million debut, but with a total of $99.3 million "Sex and the City" was just shy of $100 million after only 10 days.

Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was #3 with $22.8 million, raising its 3-week domestic total to $253 million.

Two strong weekends in a row enabled Hollywood to chip away at its box office deficit compared to 2007, a record year for revenues.

"This month offers the marketplace the opportunity to catch up with last year," said Paul Dergarabedian.
"Last year's June was not as strong as expected and this year's may be stronger, so we're definitely narrowing the gap in terms of revenue and attendance."

Receipts are at $3.8 billion this year, off 1.5% from 2007, while attendance is down 4.3%, according to Media By Numbers.

"Panda," distributed by Paramount, has Black providing the voice of a panda in ancient China who becomes an unlikely martial-arts hero. The voice cast includes Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Jackie Chan.

While the movie played well to families with young children, moviegoers 17 and older made up 71% of the audience, according to Paramount.

"There was strong appeal for this movie in the tweens, teens and general audience beyond the core families and kids," said Anne Globe for DreamWorks. "Certainly, families and kids also showed up in droves, but we really have the opportunity to play as a broad comedy, too."

"Panda" had the best opening ever for a non-sequel cartoon flick from DreamWorks, topping such hits as "Shark Tale" and "Madagascar." Among DreamWorks animated releases, only "Shrek" did better.

"Zohan" features Sandler as an Israeli commando who fakes his death to become a hair stylist in NYC. The movie came in on par with other comedies from Sandler, whose top 4 openings range from "The Longest Yard" at $47.6 million to "Click" at $40 million.

"He's just in his zone. He's incredibly consistent," said Rory Bruer of Sony. "He's the guy that always is going to make you laugh."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday at U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "Kung Fu Panda" @ $60 million.

02) "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" @ $40 million.

03) "Indiana Jones 4" @ $22.8 million.

04) "Sex and the City" @ $21.3 million.

05) "The Strangers" @ $9.3 million.

06) "Iron Man" @ $7.5 million.

07) "Narnia: Prince Caspian" @ $5.5 million.

08) "What Happens in Vegas" @ $3.4 million.

09) "Baby Mama" @ $780,000

10. "Made Of Honor," $775,000.

TAKEI & ALTMAN SET WEDDING DATE

George Takei will never forget the first time he saw Brad Altman, the man he plans to marry, more than 2 decades ago. They were working out in a club and he couldn't take his eyes off Altman, who had a "lean, tightly muscled" body, the 71-year-old actor told AP.
Takei said he asked Altman to help him train for a marathon, they fell in love, and now they've been living together for 21 years. Altman proposed by getting down on one knee while Takei was eating a sandwich after seeing on TV that California Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. It surprised Takei, who thought he would pop the question. They bought each other turquoise and silver wedding rings. Takei & Altman plan to marry Sept. 14 at the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles. Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols and Leonard Nimoy will be among the 200 guests. Takei & Altman plan to honeymoon in South America. As for what they'll wear, Altman said they'll both walk down the aisle in white tuxedoes.

'WONDERFUL LIFE' ACTOR DIES @ 75

Bob Anderson (75), who played the young George Bailey in the Christmas classic "It's a Wonderful Life," has died. Anderson died Friday of cancer at his home in Palm Springs, his wife, Victoria, said. Robert J. grew up in a Hollywood family. His father, Gene, was an assistant director and production manager. His uncles were directors William Beaudine and James Flood, and his brothers and cousins were editors and production managers. Anderson was introduced to film when he had appeared in a movie scene as a baby, his wife said.
He was 7 when he appeared in the 1940 Shirley Temple film "Young People" and went on to play roles in such films as 1945's "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." But he was best known as young Bailey in Frank Capra's 1946 "It's a Wonderful Life," the character portrayed by James Stewart. Anderson enlisted in the Navy, serving as a photographer. After the war, he spent 4 decades in the industry. From the 1950s through the 1990s he worked steadily, his wife said.

'X-FILES' ANDERSON IS PREGNANT

Gillian Anderson and her boyfriend, Mark Griffiths, are expecting their second child, her manager, Connie Freiberg, said. The "X-Files" actress and businessman have an 18-month-old son Oscar. Anderson (39) has a 13-year-old daughter, Piper, with ex-husband Clyde Klotz. She and second husband, Julian Ozanne, separated in April 2006. "The X-Files" ran from 1993-2002 on Fox. Anderson reunites with David Duchovny for "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," the second feature film from the series. The movie will be in theaters July 25.
Anderson stars with Kirsten Dunst in "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People," slated for later this year.

CARELL JOKES ABOUT KISSING THE ROCK

Steve Carell, who plays Maxwell Smart in the upcoming
"Get Smart," says he had a scent-sational time kissing Dwayne Johnson, "The Rock." "The Rock has softer lips. I guess I could say that," the 44-year-old told AP.
"He smells like strawberry shortcake. For me, that's why they call him The Rock. He rocks people's worlds."
Johnson countered that he doesn't smell or taste like strawberry shortcake - "strawberry shortcake with liver I think." The 36-year-old said he was gung-ho about kissing Carell. "We came up with a great kiss," said Johnson. "I thought if Jake Gyllenhaal can do it, Will Smith can do it, then I can do it, too.'" Said Carell: "He is such a good guy. We just laughed that whole day. There was never one moment of hesitation or awkwardness. He's game for anything." "Get Smart" is slated for June 20.

Angelina Jolie & Jennifer Aniston are sharing a play date. Brad Pitt's current romantic partner Jolie and ex-wife Aniston will go head-to-head at theaters Oct. 24, when both have a movie coming out. Jolie stars in Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" while Aniston is part of the ensemble cast in "He's Just Not That Into You."
Aniston probably will win the dollar battle because her film debuts in nationwide release, "Changeling" starts in just a few cities to build critical buzz before going wide Oct. 31. Pitt & Jolie hooked up after co-starring in 2005 hit "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" as his marriage to Aniston was unraveling. Universal is releasing "Changeling" & Warner Bros. distributes
"He's Just Not That Into You."

AMP/TP & AFTRA HAVE REACHED A DEAL

Hollywood's second-largest actors union approved a new contract. The board of American Federation of TV and Radio Artists approved the 3-year deal late Friday, and it will go to the union's 70,000 members for ratification this month. The existing contract was set to end June 30. The agreement "makes sense for all performers," AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon said. "AFTRA members now have the opportunity to vote
'yes' for higher pay, improved working conditions, and continued right of consent for use of excerpts in New Media." The Screen Actors Guild continues to negotiate with the studios. It still has the power to shut down film production. The agreement largely followed a script laid out in contracts by directors and writers. It also sets a 90-day deadline after ratification for developing a system for actors to consent to the use of clips containing their images or voices.

LEDGER SCHOLARSHIP

Heath Ledger was known for giving aspiring Australian actors a hand. Now, an Australian film organization has established a scholarship fund in the late actor's name. "There's an entire tribe of Australians who have all benefited from his generosity," said Susie Dobson, president of Australians in Film. "This (scholarship) captures Heath's spirit and serves our mission to help and celebrate Australian filmmakers." Ledger served as an ambassador for the organization. Director Gregor Jordan announced the Heath Ledger Scholarship Fund @ AIF's Breakthrough Awards, where he read a statement from Ledger's father. "Although reluctant to lend his name to anything commercial, we know Heath would be proud of his attachment to this scholarship," Kim Ledger's statement said. "This scholarship in part does what Heath has done personally during the last 10 years and supported financially or in kind many friends, Australian actors, singers, directors or writers seeking
to ply their talents in the USA." Michelle Williams, mother of Ledger's daughter, will be the first benefactor. The first recipient will be announced next year.

VRRROOOMMM1: FARMING FOR KIDS (1996)

Follow vegetable & grain production from planting to harvest on a modern 7000 acre family farm with Bill.

I have been on and around farms most of life. With that in mind, I never dreamed that I learn anything. I am proud to day that I was dead wrong. Check it out.

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED (2005)

A young Jewish American journeys to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in a Ukrain with the help of a local.

I sometimes find myself recommending not so good movies. This is a quirky charector study with some good cinematography and a likeable cast.

ABOVE THE LAW (1988)

He was a covert agent in Vietnam. He has a master black belt in Aikido. He's a cop with an attitude.

Simply put, "power corrupts, absalute power corrupts absalutely." And it is always fun to watch Steven Seagal kick some butt.

I hope you choose to join Adventureland Friends. If successful, I am considering another host with even greater member's only tools.
