 Jun 22, 2008 23:31 PDT

Hey Adventureland Friends:

It has been another busy and eventful week here. We will be moving again soon. This time our landlady is facing foreclosure and bankruptcy.

Economy had their Homecoming Day and we missed the parade. While a person can never go home again, my visit was short but sweet. I seen some old friends.

Shirley, I understand your position. But I think you should respect tradition. What you really need is a full day of events to make the trip worth while.

Ronnie, I am not entirely sure that you recognized me. To be honest, it was your voiced I recognized first. Give my best to Rodney & C.J.

Perhaps I will mention some others soon. I also plan to post 2 photos taken that day. One of has myself & Koda Bear standing infront of my old video store.

'HULK' MUSCLES UP A $54.5M WEEKEND

"The Incredible Hulk" was a box-office bruiser, yanking in $54.5 million and laying to rest the stigma of his unappreciated big-screen adventure 5 years ago.

"The Hulk got a second chance, got angry and came back with a vengeance," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "This was a big question mark going in. The film had a history or a checkered past."

Ang Lee's "Hulk" opened in 2003 with $62.1 million but died in subsequent weeks amid bad word of mouth. That movie crawled to $132.2 million, seemingly respectable but actually meager considering its first weekend.

Marvel Studios, which financed "The Incredible Hulk," & distributor Universal hope the new movie, starring Edward Norton, will have a longer shelf life & top out with better numbers than its predecessor.

Also rebounding off a bad last movie was M. Night Shyamalan, whose "The Happening" with Mark Wahlberg & Zooey Deschanel opened at #3 with $30.5 million.

Shyamalan, whose blockbusters include "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs," flopped 2 years ago with "Lady in the Water."

"Night rocked," said Chris Aronson, distribution exec for 20th Century Fox, who released "The Happening."
"Any time you're coming off an effort like 'Lady in the Water' that was perceived as a disappointment, movie-goers and critics tend to be a little gun-shy, but the numbers speak for themselves."

Fans and critics definitely were gun-shy on "The Incredible Hulk," some expecting the movie to bomb because of the bad taste "Hulk" left in audiences' mouths.

"With all the naysayers, this is a huge accomplishment," said Nikki Rocco, distribution head for Universal. "For months, they thought this was going to be a bomb."

The new movie is not a sequel to 2003's "Hulk" but, in Marvel's terms, a reboot. Fans found the earlier movie too dark and brooding.

This take is more action-oriented, casting Norton's Bruce Banner as a fugitive in the vein of "The Incredible Hulk" TV series starring Bill Bixby in the 1970s and '80s.

Despite solid reviews and fan buzz, "The Incredible Hulk" did nearly $8 million less over opening weekend than "Hulk." That gap widens even more factoring in today's higher ticket prices.

But the new flick still put up some of the best numbers ever for a movie opening in June. The studio's exit polls show audiences are recommending the movie to friends, giving it a good shot to surpass the total gross of "Hulk," Rocco said.

The movie also pulled in $31 million in 38 other countries, putting its worldwide total at $85.5 million.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's "Kung Fu Panda," the previous weekend's No. 1 movie, slipped to second with $34.3 million, raising its total to $118 million.

A solid June lineup has pushed Hollywood ahead of last year. Since the first weekend of May, domestic grosses total $1.46 billion, up 4.6% from 2007's, according to Media By Numbers. Factoring in higher ticket prices, actual attendance this summer is up 1.6%.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "The Incredible Hulk" @ $54.5 million.

02) "Kung Fu Panda" @ $34.3 million.

03) "The Happening" @ $30.5 million.

04) "Don't Mess With the Zohan" @ $16.4 million.

05) "Indiana Jones 4" @ $13.5 million.

06) "Sex and the City" @ $10.2 million.

07) "Iron Man" @ $5.1 million.

08) "The Strangers" @ $4.1 million.

09) "Chronicles Narnia: Prince Caspian" @ $3 million.

10) "What Happens in Vegas" @ $1.7 million.

REPLACING RUSSERT TOUGH TASK 4 NBC

Still reeling from Tim Russert's death, NBC News must now replace the man who not only hosted the show, but ran the Washington bureau. The "Meet the Press" host had the most important and far-reaching job in an election year. NBC has potential successors to Russert within the company. The decision has big financial implications, since the show earns $60 million a year in profits with few expenses and often has a waiting list of advertisers. Chris Matthews is the best-known. David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell are lesser-known.

CYRUS SURPRISED BY VANITY FAIR PHOTO

Billy Ray Cyrus says he wasn't around when Annie Leibovitz photographed his 15-year-old daughter in a sheet for Vanity Fair. "I wasn't there at the time," the country star said on NBC's "Today." "(Miley's) publicist was there, and everyone seemed in control," he said. "I didn't know they (were) gonna strip her down and wrap her with a blanket." "So I was surprised when I saw it, you know, but ... stuff happens. That's life. Things happen and sometimes things get a little out of control and you just gotta deal with life," he said. "Again, it's peaks and valleys and ups and downs."

'TREKKIE' GETS FIRST MARRIAGE LICENSE

"Star Trek" star George Takei (71) is ready to "live long and prosper" with his partner of 21 years. Takei will marry Brad Altman (54) September 14th in LA. The actor was the first to pay $70 for a marriage license in West Hollywood. The marriage license is good for 90 days. Takei was jubilant, saying "it's going to be the only day like this in our lives and it is the only day like this in the history of America. May equality live long and prosper." The California Supreme Court has legalized same-sex marriage.

ELLEN MUM ON PLANNED DREAM WEDDING

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have set a wedding date. DeGeneres, who won her fourth Daytime Emmy, told reporters that they are planning their "dream wedding."
"Yes, we have set a wedding date," said DeGeneres.
"How do I feel about it? I obviously feel like it's long overdue. I think someday people will look back on this like women not having the right to vote and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous that we don't all have the same rights." DeGeneres didn't say when or where it would take place. She plans to fly the de Rossi family in from Australia and "incredible people" would sing at the ceremony. She said she would show "a tiny bit" of the nuptials on her talk show - and joked that she would use her Daytime Emmy as a wedding-cake topper. "Planning a wedding is very stressful," said Ellen. "It's crazy. My gardener is now invited."

CRAIG INJURED ON JAMES BOND SET

Daniel Craig was sent to the hospital after suffering a minor hand injury while filming the latest James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" at Pinewood Studios near London. "There was a minor incident on set," Columbia TriStar said. "Daniel injured his hand. He sought medical attention. He was back on the set within a matter of hours and production went on."
It's not the first accident that's occurred during filming. Stuntmen have been injured. Neither Craig, director Marc Forster or any other cast members were on location when those occurred. "Quantum of Solace" is the 22nd Bond film and is scheduled for release later this year.

CARELL HOSTS ANOTHER CHARITY SCREENING

Steve Carell stepped out of "The Office" to join the fight against cancer at a benefit that featured a screening of "Get Smart." The screening was held to benefit The Zachary Carson Brain Tumor Fund, named after a teen Carell met on the set of his NBC comedy in February 2007 through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Carell said he has been inspired by Carson and his family. "It was a great group of people, is a great group of people, and I just felt very honored to be included in that circle," he said. The screening at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was the second time Carell has used his celebrity to raise money to fight diffuse pontine glioma, a pediatric cancer that killed Carson. In June 2007, he orchestrated a premiere of
"Evan Almighty" to fund research into the cancer, which causes a malignant tumor in the brain stem. Carson died 3 months later at the age of 19, after a 27-month fight against the disease. Tickets for the screening sold for $100. The event also included an auction offering the chance to have Carell record a voice mail message and front row seats at Fenway Park, among other things.

INCREDIBLY, HULK ABDUCTED FROM THEATER

Missing: an eight-foot-tall green man wearing ripped purple pants and missing his feet. Police in Lowell, Mass., say a promo statue for "The Incredible Hulk" disappeared from a theater this week. Police Capt. James McPadden says the statue is probably in some kid's bedroom. But he thinks more than one person was involved and that a car or pickup truck was needed to whisk it away. The statue is missing its feet because it was bolted to a platform and whoever took it snapped it off at the ankles.

YAHOO FLICKR FOUNDERS HEAD 4 THE EXIT

The husband & wife behind Flickr resigned, following 2 executives that departed since the Internet pioneer rejected a $47.5 billion takeover from Microsoft. Flickr founders Stewart Butterfield & Caterina Fake want to pursue an opportunity they haven't revealed, Yahoo said. Fake's last day was June 13. Butterfield leaves July 12. The couple sold Flickr for $35 million in 2005, a year after creating the Web site. Flickr had been weaning itself from its founders. Fake had been working in new technology and Butterfield took an extended paternity leave. Kakul Srivastava, who became Flickr's GM in April, will oversee the service. They follow the resignations of executive vice presidents, Jeff Weiner & Usama Fayyad. Weiner oversaw search engine and e-mail. He left to become an "executive in residence" at Accel Partners & Greylock Partners. Fayyad was in charge of user data. Yahoo attributed the departures as unrelated to Microsoft. Had a Microsoft deal been
reached, all Yahoo's employees would have been covered by a severance plan that would have paid them if they were fired or quit after being reassigned within two years.
