Hey Adventureland Friends:
Once again, I'm going to have this ready for your weekend pleasure. I cut the news short and expanded the blog. Was it a good trade-off?
The news often took several hours to edit. This week I blogged news articles that stirred me to comment. It has been a low pressure week and I thank you.
I am trying 2 new features too. Sneak Peaks will be capsulated reviews when available. Paul's Picks is an expansion of my movie recommendations.

'BATMAN' SENDS 'SPIDEY' PACKING WITH $155M
Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of box-office superheroes. "The Dark Knight" took in $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007.
"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. The movie should pass the $200 million mark by week end.
Hollywood set an overall record of $253 million for a 3-day weekend, beating the $218.4 million haul over the weekend of July 7, 2006, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
"This weekend is such a juggernaut," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, whose musical
"Mamma Mia!" debuted at No. 2 with $27.6 million.
Factoring in higher admission prices, "Spider-Man 3" may have sold slightly more tickets than "The Dark Knight."
At 2007's average price of $6.88, "Spider-Man 3" sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means "The Dark Knight" would have sold 21.94 million tickets.
Revenue totals for "The Dark Knight" could change when final numbers are released Monday.
The movie's release was preceded by months of buzz and speculation. Heath Ledger, who died in January, played the Joker, his performance prompting predictions that the role might earn him an Academy Award nomination.
"The average opening gross of the last 5 'Batman' movies is $47 million. This tripled that, and for a reason," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "A big part of that was the Heath Ledger mystique and a phenomenal performance that absolutely deserves the excitement surrounding it."
"The Dark Knight" reunites director Christopher Nolan with his "Batman Begins" star Christian Bale, whose vigilante crime-fighter is taunted and tested by Ledger's Joker as the villain unleashes violence and chaos on the city of Gotham.
Overseas, "The Dark Knight" added $40 million in 20 countries where it began opening Wednesday, including Australia, Mexico and Brazil. The film opens in Great Britain this weekend and rolls out to most of the rest of the world over the next few weeks.
"The Dark Knight," which cost $185 million to make, also broke the "Spider-Man 3" record for best debut in IMAX theaters with $6.2 million. "Spider-Man 3" opened with $4.7 million in IMAX cinemas.
"Every single show is sold out," said Greg Foster, IMAX chairman and president. "We're adding shows as much as we can, but we're at 100 percent capacity."
On opening day Friday, "The Dark Knight" also took in more money than previously counted, Fellman said. The film pulled in a record $67.85 million, up $1.5 million from the studio's estimates a day earlier.
The previous opening-day record also had been held by "Spider-Man 3" with $59.8 million.
Women accounted for most of the audience for "Mamma Mia!", which Universal opened as counter-programming to the male-dominated audience for "Dark Knight."
"With the crowded summer, we knew we would have to find the right weekend, and this seemed like the perfect one considering 3/4 of our audience was female," Rocco said.
Based on the stage musical set to the tunes of ABBA,
"Mamma Mia!" features Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.
The weekend's other new wide release, 20th Century Fox's animated family flick "Space Chimps," opened at No. 7 with $7.4 million.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday.
01) "The Dark Knight" @ $155.34 million.
02) "Mamma Mia!" @ $27.6 million.
03) "Hancock" @ $14 million.
04) "Journey to Center Earth" @ $11.9 million.
05) "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" @ $10 million.
06) "WALL-E" @ $9.8 million.
07) "Space Chimps" @ $7.4 million.
08) "Wanted" @ $5.1 million.
09) "Get Smart" @ $4.1 million.
10) "Kung Fu Panda" @ $1.8 million.

CAPSULE REVIEWS OF FILMS OPENING THIS WEEK:
"AMERICAN TEEN" - Nanette Burstein's documentary doesn't tell you anything you didn't already know about high school. It can be a rough time, even if you're pretty and popular. Kids divide themselves into cliques. They can be mean to each other. Pressure can come from all sides - from parents, coaches, fellow students and mostly from within. But the intimate way in which Burstein tracks the lives of a group of seniors in small-town Indiana brings this familiar subject to life, and it should make viewers feel nostalgic, regardless of how long it's been since they walked those crowded, chaotic halls. Burstein follows several traditional types at Warsaw Community High School: a bossy rich girl who runs the school; a basketball star hoping for a college scholarship; a band geek who longs for a girlfriend; an artsy young woman who dreams of becoming a filmmaker; and a heartthrob who falls for a girl outside the popular crowd. If this sounds like a John Hughes
movie you've seen a million times before - or all of them at once - you're right. The poster for "American Teen" even features the five young stars arranged in the same pose as actors from "The Breakfast Club," which is probably too cute for its own good. But they're all so engaging, it's hard not to get drawn into their daily dramas. And except for some obvious staging on Burstein's part, their ups and downs, doubts and dreams, all feel vividly real. PG-13 for some strong language, sexual material, some drinking and brief smoking, all involving teens. 101 min. Three stars out of four.

---
"BRIDESHEAD REVISITED" - An unimpeachable yet ultimately unmoving adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel about social ambition, religious conflict and doomed love. There's nothing wrong with director Julian Jarrold's film: The cast is fine, the production values solid. Everything is meticulously appointed in the traditional high style of a Merchant-Ivory period piece. As in "Becoming Jane," Jarrold's Jane Austen tale from last year, it's all beautiful - but bland. The whole endeavor just rings a bit hollow, especially condensed to two hours, compared to the epic 11-episode miniseries from 1981. Maybe we've changed too, though. The ideas that homosexuality could serve as a source of torment, and that differences in class and faith could create irreparable rifts in a relationship, seem rather archaic now. And so the chief sources of tension in Waugh's novel, which might have been perceived as incendiary when it was published in 1945, have lost much of
their punch. Screenwriters Andrew Davies and Jeremy Brock have made a few tweaks to the text (which the Waugh estate approved) but the meat of the story remains intact. Aspiring painter Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode, in the role that made Jeremy Irons famous) becomes enraptured by the aristocratic Marchmain family and, specifically, with their ancestral home, Brideshead Castle. Charles first meets the decadent dandy Sebastian (Ben Whishaw) while at Oxford and the two quickly fall into a close friendship. Then he becomes smitten by Sebastian's sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell). Emma Thompson is, unsurprisingly, an intimidating force as the family's rigidly Catholic matriarch, Lady Marchmain. PG-13 for some sexual content. 120 min. Two and a half stars out of four.
- Christy Lemire, AP Movie Critic
---
"STEP BROTHERS" - The title is "Step Brothers." You know, because there are two of them. But Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are essentially playing the same person, which is the movie's fundamental, irreparable flaw. As 40-year-olds who've never left home and are forced to share a bedroom when their parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) get married, Ferrell and Reilly are stuck in the same state of arrested development. There's no odd-couple tension, no witty banter, just a prolonged, painfully unfunny game of one-upmanship in which each actor is trying to outdo the other in one-note obnoxiousness. You wouldn't want to spend two hours with one of them, much less both. Sure, they display slight personality differences - Ferrell's Brennan wears vintage T-shirts with Pablo Cruise or The Judds on them, while Reilly's Dale prefers Yoda - but they're cut from the same kitschy cloth. The humorously awkward chemistry these actors shared as NASCAR
teammates in "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is gone, because the script makes no room for it. Which is strange, because Ferrell co-wrote the screenplay with his old friend, director Adam McKay, with whom he collaborated on that previous comedy. (Reilly shares a story-by credit.) As you watch the movie, it doesn't take long to realize that their creative process consisted of sitting around, cracking each other up with adolescent gags, and then writing it all down. Whether the rest of the world will be doubled over with laughter seems irrelevant. R for crude and sexual content, and pervasive language. 112 min. One and a half stars out of four.
- Christy Lemire, AP Movie Critic
---
"THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE" - The makers of the new "X-Files" movie have done themselves a disservice in coming up with the elongated title, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe." Really, it just invites a whole bunch of bad jokes which, unfortunately, are justified. It's easy to imagine how they might go: I want to believe another "X-Files" movie is necessary, 10 years after the first one came out and six years after the pioneering sci-fi series went off the air. I want to believe it's worth my time and money, even if I wasn't a fervent devotee of the TV show. And I want to believe that Mulder and Scully still have the same chemistry they once did - a big reason the series developed a cult fan base. Well, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson do slip comfortably back into the roles that made them superstars in the 1990s, but the movie itself from director and "X-Files" series creator Chris Carter never feels like anything more than an extended episode. In
deference to the show's many mysteries and twists, we won't give anything away here. We'll just say the plot involves a missing persons case, severed body parts and some creepy hunts and chases through the snow. In writing the script, Carter and longtime collaborator Frank Spotnitz have come up with a stand-alone story, one that doesn't require expertise in "X-Files" minutiae to follow, although they've also left some nuggets for loyal fans along the way. Amanda Peet and rapper Xzibit co-star as FBI agents on the case, with Billy Connolly as a fallen priest who may or may not be experiencing psychic visions. PG-13 for violent and disturbing content and thematic material. 104 min. Two stars out of four.

ROBIN WILLIAMS
DOB: July 21, 1951 - Chicago, Illinois
Multifaceted actor who not only possesses a gift for making people laugh, but can move them to tears in a darkened theatre as well. Williams studied acting at Julliard, and worked as a mime and stand-up comic before landing the role of the loveable alien, "Mork," on the ’70s sitcom "Mork and Mindy." Although Williams’ first film, Popeye, was a box office disappointment, he soon found his niche when he was allowed to use his improvisational talents in the 1987 film Good Morning, Vietnam. Williams has since lit up the silver screen in successful films including Dead Poets Society (1989), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), The Birdcage (1996), and received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. Williams has recently spooked fans with his acting range. He has been very convincing in his considerably dark roles.

1996: He reached a unique milestone by having 2 of his films reach the $100-million mark in the same week, Jumanji (1995) and The Birdcage (1996).
One week after Christopher Reeve's tragic accident, Robin visited him in the hospital. He was dressed in scrubs, spoke with a Russian accent, and did a bunch of wacky antics. Reeve stated that, "That was the first time he laughed since the accident!". Helped his long-time friend pay his medical bills too.

QUOTABLES:
Cocaine is God's way of telling you you are making too much money.
Ah, yes, divorce, from the Latin word meaning to rip out a man's genitals through his wallet.
See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time.
Ballet: Men wearing pants so tight that you can tell what religion they are.
You can start any Monty Python routine and people finish it for you. Everyone knows it like shorthand.
About Canada - "Canada is like a loft apartment over a really great party."
Everyone has these two visions when they hold their child for the first time. The first is your child as an adult saying 'I want to thank the Nobel Committee for this award.' The other is 'You want fries with that?'
"A woman would never make a nuclear bomb. They would never make a weapon that kills, no, no. They'd make a weapon that makes you feel bad for a while.
They're talking about partial nuclear disarmament, which is also like talking about partial circumcision-you either go all the way or forget it.
Countering the complaint that the juiciest roles go to younger actors: "They (the roles) may not be financially enriching, but personally enriching? Yes. You are no longer under pressure. You don't have to prove yourself on some levels, but you do have to [creatively] push yourself."
I started doing comedy because that was the only stage that I could find. It was the pure idea of being on stage. That was the only thing that interested me, along with learning the craft and working, and just being in productions with people.
[on his acting career]: "All the new people you meet, it's pretty amazing. The vampire needs new blood. And there is still a lot to learn and there is always great stuff out there. Even mistakes can be wonderful."
God gave us a penis and a brain, but not enough blood to use both at once.
Okra is the closest thing to nylon I've ever eaten. It's like they bred cotton with a green bean. Okra, tastes like snot. The more you cook it, the more it turns into string.

'DARK KNIGHT' SETS BOX OFFICE RECORD
Batman's joust with the Joker has set another box office record. Stoked by fan fever, "The Dark Knight" set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million, Warner Bros. said. The movie's Friday haul surpassed the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3." "The Dark Knight" might break the opening-weekend record of $151.1 million, also held by "Spider-Man 3." "Dark Knight" began with a record $18.5 million from midnight screenings, topping the previous high of $16.9 million for "Star Wars: Episode III." The opening day grosses for "The Dark Knight" far exceeded the full weekend haul of "Batman Begins," which took in $48.7 million in its first days in 2005.
ROEPER LEAVING MOVIE REVIEW SHOW
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper says he is leaving "At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper" after 8 seasons. His last appearance on the show will air the weekend of Aug. 16-17. Roeper intends to "proceed elsewhere ... as the co-host of a movie review show that honors the standards established by Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert more than 30 years ago." Roeper joined Sun-Times movie critic Roger Ebert on the show in 2000, after Ebert's original co-host, Chicago Tribune film critic Gene Siskel, died of a brain tumor in 1999.
Siskel & Ebert had begun reviewing movies together in 1975 on Chicago public broadcasting's WTTW. Ebert has been sidelined the last 2 years because of his health.

TV BUYERS STEERED 2 COSTLY LCD
LCD or plasma? If That is the big question. According to a mystery-shopper survey, electronics salespeople don't know much about the differences, but still have a ready answer: LCD. Salespeople steer customers to a LCD rather than a plasma, according to J.D. Power and Associates. Even with their preference for LCDs, the salespeople rarely mentioned those TVs' advantages. Few told customers that LCD sets are lighter and use less power than plasma. The report is focused on sets 40 inches or larger, where plasmas are contenders.
'GOLDEN GIRL' ESTELLE GETTY DIES
Estelle Getty (84) spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role in 1985 as the sarcastic Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls." Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died Tuesday at her home, said her son, Carl Gettleman. Rue McClanahan said, "She will always be with us in her crowning achievement, Sophia." "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her," Bea Arthur said. After her success in "Golden Girls," other roles came. She played Cher's mother in "Mask," Sylvester Stallone's in "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" and Barry Manilow's in "Copacabana." Other credits included "Mannequin" and "Stuart Little."

MILEY & BILLY RAY EAGLES 2 BE FREED
Two 14-week-old American bald eagles named by Miley Cyrus & her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, will be released. The American Eagle Foundation has released 90+ eagles from Dolly Parton's Dollywood. The eagles were named Tennessee (Cyrus' home state) & Hope (Miley's name). The stars won't be there to release the eagles, which were hatched this spring at the foundation's center. The eagles take flight from a nesting tower on Douglas Lake. The bald eagle, once near extinction, was taken off the endangered-species list last year.

COLLEGE ROAD TRIP (2008)
When an overachieving high school student decides to travel around the country to look at colleges, her overprotective cop father decides to accompany her.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0997047/
*****
This is a comedic buddy flick like the usual college or road trip movies. But there are elements of family drama too. Both expertly handled by Martin Lawrence.
There is very little (if anything) a parent may find objectionable. Young kids will be drawn to their pet pig that joins them on the trip.
Good movies are undercover teachers. This time the student is as much the parent as the child. Take time to analyze your relationships with your children.
