Howdy Adventureland Friends:

This has been another downer week. Everything has been piling on by the shovels full. I'm finding myself being crushed. So much so, that I am thinking about taking next week off to regroup and recharge.

Sky Vue Drive-in has closed for the season. The best Paula can get is a last minute year to year lease. The owners are still looking to sell. So we are not likely to know anything about a 2009 season until late winter.

Our Celebrity Spotlight shines on Oliver Stone. Did you know he lost his virginity to hooker as a teen? It was a treat from his dad.

The Snack Bar has a handy BLT wrap from Mr. Food. Prepare these tastey treats for your next movie. Experiment with other meats as well.

I am keeping the bookmark for last week. Check out World Wide Web TV.

Blog Bytes has been rolling along this week. I cover a number of topics from movie museums to gay marriage. Look for boys clubs alumni next week.

We have a birthday this week. Happy Birthday to Ann Currier on September 21st. She shares this special day with Larry Hagman (1931), Stephen King (1947), Bill Murray (1950), Ethan Coen (1958), Dave Coulier (1959), Ricki Lake (1968), Alfonso Ribeiro (1971) and Joseph Mazzello (1983).

COEN BROS. SCORE & REVERSE SLUMP WITH 'BURN'

Joel and Ethan Coen scored their biggest opener to date by raking in $19.4 million for "Burn After Reading" and helping end a 7-week attendance slide at theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The madcap comedy starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovich raked in $7 million more than the duo's last box-office hit, 2004 comedy "The Ladykillers," according to Media by Numbers.

"Burn After Reading's" success comes just a year after the brothers gained widespread acclaim for the drama "No Country for Old Men," which won 4 Academy Awards and grossed $73.3 million.

Their Oscar credentials and the star-studded cast combined to make "Burn After Reading" a hit, said Jack Foley, president of distribution for Focus Features.

"The Coens have broken into more commercial territory with this film," Foley said. "They've become more of a household name."

The weekend's 3 other new releases also turned in solid performances.

Tyler Perry's "The Family That Preys," starring Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard in a drama about 2 families from different social classes, debuted at #2 with $18 million. Five out of six of Perry's films have opened at #1 or #2 on their opening weekends, said Steve Rothenberg, president of domestic distribution for Lionsgate.

Rothenberg said he expected "The Family that Preys" to continue to play well over upcoming weekends as Perry's movies typically do.

"It should have good legs," he said.

Overture Film's "Righteous Kill" opened at #3 with $16.5 million, proving that Robert DeNiro & Al Pacino still draw fans. The movie played to a wide range of ages and both genders, said Kyle Davies, Overture's executive vice president of theatrical distribution.

"The primary appeal is to see these two legends together," he said.

Picturehouse's "The Women" - starring Meg Ryan and Annette Bening in a remake of George Cukor's 1939 comedy-drama - was #4 with $10.1 million.

The weekend's total box-office draw should surpass $100 million, breaking a 7-week slide in ticket revenue, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers. Last weekend was the slowest weekend in 5 years, with just $67.6 million.

He attributed the uptick to the variety in genres that studios offered this weekend.

"Audiences want a lot of choice," he said. "Each of these movies had a particular demographic. This was the cinematic equivalent of a magazine rack."

The next 7 films in the top dozen were holdovers, grossing $4.3 million or less.

The Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" continued to rack up its gross with another $4 million, for total box office revenue of $517.7 million to date.

Last weekend's top-ranked "Bangkok Dangerous" starring Nicolas Cage dropped to eighth place with $2.4 million.

The top 12 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, as estimated by Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "Burn After Reading" @ $19.4 million.

02) "Tyler Perry's The Family that Preys" @ $18.0 million.

03) "Righteous Kill" @ $16.5 million.

04) "The Women" @ $10.1 million.

05) "The House Bunny" @ $4.3 million.

06) "Tropic Thunder" @ $4.2 million.

07) "The Dark Knight" @ $4.0 million.

08) "Bangkok Dangerous" @ $2.4 million.

09) "Traitor" @ $2.1 million.

10) "Death Race" @ $2.0 million.

11) "Babylon A.D." @ $1.7 million.

12) "Mamma Mia!" @ $1.7 million.

WILLIAM OLIVER STONE

DOB: September 15, 1946 - New York, New York

Filmmaker who has garnered Academy Awards for his work as both a screenwriter and a director. Stone won his first Oscar in 1978 for penning the screenplay to Midnight Express. Stone thrives on controversy, and as a result has explored such sensitive subjects as the Vietnam War and the Kennedy Assassination in his films. Platoon (1986) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989), which were the first two installments of his "Vietnam Trilogy," both earned him Oscars for Best Director. The final film in his trilogy, Heaven and Earth, was not embraced by the critics. Stone’s body of work as a filmmaker includes JFK (1991), The Doors (1991), Natural Born Killers (1994), Nixon (1995), The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Any Given Sunday (1999) and the documentary Comandante in 2003.

NOTABLES:

Educated at Yale and New York University. Was taught by Martin Scorsese at New York University Film School.

Took a year off from Yale in 1965 to teach at a Catholic school in Vietnam. After graduating from New York University, he worked as a cabdriver and a messenger.

Born at 9:58am-EDT

Did a tour of duty in Vietnam.

His father Louis Stone was a stockbroker on Wall Street, then he suffered some financial setbacks due to bad investments and a divorce from Oliver's mother Jacqueline. Wall Street (1987) is supposed to be modeled after Lou.

Arrested for drunken driving and possession of hashish. [June 1999]

Kicked a cocaine habit by moving to France while writing Scarface (1983).

Talks about the experience of his father Louis Stone taking him to lose his virginity to a prostitute in his mid-teens.

QUOTABLES:

Nationalism and patriotism are the two most evil forces that I know of in this century or in any century and cause more wars and more death and more destruction to the soul and to human life than anything else.

I don't believe in this business of chopping up a film and then releasing a 'director's cut' on DVD. What you see should be the director's cut. This is the director's cut. If you can spend four hours killing Bill, Alexander deserves some space.

I love intelligent films that come at you fast. I don't have attention deficit disorder, my mind moves fast. There's a lot to deal with in my films. We had so many facts to go through, so the governing style was flash, cut, flash, repeat.

If I were George Bush, I would shoot myself. I think he lives in fear of drinking again. There's nothing more dangerous for America than an ex-alcoholic President who tells you to believe in Jesus.

The Indians once told me that stones are the most revered and ancient of recording devices. And that perhaps I am here on this Earth to write of these mute histories - just another stone, an 'Oliver' stone.

The film business? I love film, but the film business is shit.

If Bush had spent some time in Vietnam, he would have a very different view on War.

SILENT BOB BREAKS HIS SILENCE AGAIN

On August 2, 1970, Kevin Smith entered the world and slackers rejoiced. Precisely 37 years later, Smith took the stage of his local Count Basie theater on his birthday and reminisced about a hodgepodge of topics from Clerks II, his cameo in Live Free or Die Hard and his jury duty. As was the case twice previously (An Evening With Kevin Smith and An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder), the cameras were rolling. On October 21, Sold Out: A Threevening with Kevin Smith will debut with a 2 disc special edition DVD. Threevening is 222 minutes of Silent Bob doing what he does best, injecting his unique take on life into his day-to-day activities. The set also includes over an hour of uncensored outtakes which will invariably turn out to be the crowning moments of the DVD, if the past is any indication. The suggested retail price is $19.97.

FELLOW CRITIC WHACKS ROGER EBERT

Roger Ebert confirmed that a fellow critic yelled at him and whacked him on the knee during a screening at the Toronto Film Festival last weekend, but said the incident was "blown out of proportion." Ebert did not name the other critic. But he said an account published in the New York Daily News that named the other man as rival New York Post movie critic Lou Lumenick was "truthful." The incident began, Ebert said, when he could not see subtitles for "Slumlord Millionaire" because the man sitting in front of him was leaning into the aisle. While Ebert said he thought the man was wrong for blocking his sight line, he felt sorry for him. "He had no idea who was behind him when he smacked me," Ebert wrote.

TAKEI MARRIES LIFE PARTNER ALTMAN

George Takei and his longtime partner, Brad Altman, have agreed to live long and prosper together. Takei (71) & Altman (54) were married in a multicultural ceremony at the Japanese American National Museum that featured a Buddhist priest, Native American wedding bands, a Japanese Koto harp and a bagpipe procession. The couple, both clad in white dinner jackets with black pants, made a grand entrance to the tune of "One Singular Sensation." They stepped into a circle of yellow roses and lilies, where they shared a Japanese tea ceremony and were wed by a Buddhist priest. The couple, together 21 years, wrote their own vows.

AUCTIONS 4 SUPERMAN BIRTHPLACE IN OHIO

Online auctions benefiting Superman's birthplace have been more powerful than a locomotive. The sales on eBay are only half-done and already have surpassed their goal of raising $50,000 to fix up the boyhood home of Jerry Siegel. It's where he and Joe Shuster came up with the Man of Steel during the 1930s. When the second of four auctions of original art and other items wrapped up Tuesday, more than $53,000 had been raised. The auctions continue through Sept. 30. The proceeds will be used to replace the roof and redo the exterior. Organizers say money beyond the original goal will be set aside for repairs inside and for future work.

The couple opened the Maddox Chivan Children's Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, named after their son Maddox (7), adopted from Cambodia. The center provides treatment, education and social services to children affected by HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

LATE CARLIN 2 BE HONORED WITH MARK TWAIN

Jon Stewart, Bill Maher and Margaret Cho are among an all-star lineup who will honor the late George Carlin at this year's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The prize was announced just before Carlin's death in June. It will be awarded during a tribute performance November 10th at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. The program announced Tuesday will be aired later on PBS. Others who will honor Carlin include Garry Shandling, Lily Tomlin, Denis Leary, Joan Rivers, Lewis Black and Richard Belzer. The prize is being awarded posthumously for the first time in its 11-year history. Last year the Kennedy Center honored Billy Crystal.

NEW STAMP HONORS BETTE DAVIS

"She did it the hard way." That's how Bette Davis wanted to be remembered, and a new U.S. postage stamp honoring her does that. The stamp features a portrait of Davis as she appeared in the 1950 film "All About Eve," in which she played an aging stage actress battling to save her career. Davis was nominated for an Academy Award for that performance. Mom chose her epitaph because she viewed a lot of her life as difficult, explained son Michael Merrill. "She would have been thrilled," he added. Born Ruth Elizabeth Davis 100 years ago in Lowell, Mass. and died in France in 1989. She appeared in 100+ films, was first woman honored with AFI's Lifetime Achievement Award and first woman president of AMPAS. By 1942 she was the highest-paid woman in America and helped organize the Hollywood Canteen.

THE BUCKET LIST (2007)

Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.

*****

Edward (Jack Nicholson) is wealthy dude who finds himself a patient in a hospital he owns. Here realizes that semi-private rooms were a bad idea when he has to share a room.

Carter (Morgan Freeman) is a hard working mechanic that has to share his room with Edward and his personal assistant (Sean Hayes). Eventually, an uneasy tension gives way to friendship and needed companionship.

Both find themselves facing cancer and death, they decide to go out with a bang. This is where the flick becomes a road trip movie with unattached Edward leading newly seperated Carter on a series of adventures. Each one bringing them closer together and steering Carter homeward bound.

Shortly after returning home, Carter has collapsed and died. And Edward finds himself eulagizing his newest and probably his dearest friend. He does the unthinkable and returns to his own family.

This is a great movie with a great deal of heart. This should appeal to all Jack Nicholson and Mogan Freeman fans. And adults in general. For me, I like both of these stars. So I had to see this movie.

The house deal has stalled again. Our traditional mortgage route failed and the closing date looms. Now we are trying 2 creative finance options. Now, I would really appreciate your prasyers.

Normally, I would not pray for money. But, as you may recall, we face eviction because of our landlord's bankruptcy. So the deck is really stacked against us. But, I know God will provide something.

See you next week?
