If you just click on the author's name, which follow the "Posted By",
instead of the envelope w/red arrow you can reply to the author only.

I own around a dozen egroups, most of them on Yahoo, but a few on
SmartGroups. If SmartGroups had a reply/author option instead of all
replies going to the list, I'd recommend it as a good alternative.
Lacking that feature, it's not good, for large groups because you get
too many "accidental" personal replies.
Yahoo Groups is a good alternative to Topica. It has a lot of useful
management features as well as features like a calendar with
automatic reminder emails for upcoming events. (We use this for SDMB
meetings, which are always the third Tuesday, and only have to set it
up once, using the repeat feature.)
The downside of Yahoo is you have to go through the potentially
cumbersome/frustraing process of getting a Yahoo ID to access the
group Website and feature. It's usually pretty easy, and the only
caveat is to be sure you opt out of all the "may we spam you?"
checkboxes.
If anybody wants more info on YahooGroups I'd be happy to give more
details.
