Bicyclists,
I always forget to promote the What Matters Most series that I've
been lucky enough to be involved with for years. A couple years ago,
Willie Weir spoke and got some of the best reviews we've ever received.
THIS Sunday (tomorrow the 18th) we'll have an East Coast visitor who
we would all clearly party with if he lived in town. Troy West is in
artist and architect who is passionate about his work and passionate
about changing the world's weaknesses in the way that folks on this
list are. The Karpeles has good bike parking on the back patio. Come
early if you want to help me struggle to set up Mr. West's old school
slides.
Finally, the format of "What Matters Most" allows for a lot of group
participation. So you can expect some great Q&A.
Don
What Matters Most
Sixteenth century French essayist Michel de Montaigne cautioned, "The
things that matter most must not be at the mercy of things that
matter least." Twenty-first century folks call it "prioritizing." We
speak of the importance of "putting first things first," yet
frequently succumb to the pragmatic, the unconsidered, the habitual.
How do we determine what really matters most, and how does acting on
those values impact our lives? Prominent guests share their personal
challenges and invite discussion of your own.
Our Winter term guest is prominent humanitarian and environmental
architect Troy West, co-curator with his artist wife Claudia Flynn of
the non-profit Hera Gallery, operating under the auspices of the Hera
Educational Foundation in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Their latest
exhibition "Waging Peace" of works from 26 established and emerging
artists as far away as India, Italy, Indonesia and Honduras, is the
third in a trilogy exploring critical issues facing our society
today. The first was "Artists Respond to the Environment Under
Seige." West and Flynn are committed to the values of educating,
encouraging and sharing cultural, social and aesthetic diversity. Mr.
West speaks to "peace being a central issue at the root of our
humanity." You are invited to dialogue with him as Marsha Karpeles
and Dr. Don Lubach set the stage for questions, observations and
conversation.
While this course is designed for older adults, everyone 18 or over
is welcome.
