SCCC Season Scoring

Jacque, The Collegiate Cycling Board of Directors, Daniel, Sean, and members
of the SCCC -
Let me begin by saying that we really appreciate your time spent working on
our conference. I realize that you are essentially doing a volunteer's job,
though you do receive a stipend from USA Cycling. Our conference would not
continue to function without your working for it.
There have, however, been numerous problems this season and last, not the
least of which has been scoring this season.
I would like to start by pointing out a couple of things with your most
recent email.
First off, this is not the first time that you have been informed there were
problems with the tabulated points. After seeing the points following the
first two races of the season, I sent you emails detailing errors with UT's
rider placement and points. If you'd like, I'll be happy to forward these
on to you again.
Second, at conference, the results were tabulated and announced by Matt. No
one had any complaints about the results at that point, suggesting they were
in fact final. Next, you never 'announced' that MSU had won. As can be
found farther down in the quoted emails below, it was mentioned in an
off-handed way, without any proof or documentation. The whole problem could
have been solved had you been present at the conference championships, but
from what I understand you were officiating a Mountain Bike event.
I understand that tabulating the results is difficult and time consuming,
but we are one of the smallest conferences, and somehow all of the larger
ones manage it successfully. In the most recent spreadsheet I requested
from you, I can literally count hundreds of errors. You are receiving some
kind of a stipend to do this, yet we have spent a collective total of over 9
hours independently verifying the results and attempting to correct the
errors.
Next, I would like to refute your point about being so many "last minute
"butts". These refutes and corrections can only be done at the last minute,
because we do not receive information until the last minute. Results were
never officially sent out about the conference results, and results for the
rest were often sent out very late. Furthermore, information this Spring
regarding upcoming events has been late at best. We did not receive
information about nationals from the conference until 2 days before we had
to leave, putting us in a scramble to complete paperwork, at best.
To add to the last-minute mode of operation of our conference, our
conference did not meet until late January, forcing schools to scramble to
find a date and making it extremely difficult to host a race. Even when the
meeting did happen, it was not in a central location, leaving some schools
unable to attend. This forced schools to not host races, since they were
not able to set a date until too late, not get facilities reserved on time,
or other problems associated with last-minute planning.
Finally, I'd like to address the selectiveness of rules enforcement within
the conference. When the method of tabulating points was changed
mid-season, no one was informed of the change. Furthermore, this change was
in direct violation of the national collegiate rulebook. There are many
other instances of rules being selectively not enforced. They're rules, we
all agree to them, so let's abide by them.
Again, I and I'm sure the rest of the conference appreciate your work you've
done for the conference over the last year. Due to your lack of thoroughness
in these results, not to mention choosing other USAC events over your
responsibility as a conference director, I'm forced to question whether or
not your interest in promoting Collegiate Cycling is sincere. I would ask
you and the Board of Directors for Collegiate Cycling to seriously consider
this, looking forward to next year. Collegiate Cycling should be enjoyable
and a way to grow and encourage young athletes and leaders, the future of
the sport. Let's make sure it stays that way.

If you or anyone else can come up with a program that will score without
having to do it manually as I have is welcome to take on this onerous task.
I've sent results out after every race asking for verification. This is the
first I've heard from you that there were problems. You were well
represented at Conf Champs by Matt, who scored the finals and announced
winners. I didn't get any info from him so again, totaled manually and ran
by everyone. Not until I announced that in my opinion, MSU had won did I
get flack feedback, which I've done my best to correct errors.
Gary and I will go thru these at Nats tomorrow and what we determine is
going to be it. I'm tired of all the last minute "butts". I'll give a
courtesy email to every club pres/mgr before I post it online.

It should also be mentioned that Scott Walker and I (both UT riders) spent
over three hours independently verifying and recalculating the results sent
out by Jacque. She claims that MSU won conference by 68 points, which even
by her own calculations is incorrect.
The recalculated totals, which include a large number of corrections, some
of which are mentioned below, were sent to Gary a few days ago so he can
verify them according to his own results. This is also to ensure that the
MSU points are correct, since Scott and I had a few discrepancies that we
were unable to resolve.
In short, Jacque, your calculations are plain wrong, and I do not
appreciate the complete disinterest you have shown in resolving the matter.
Your lack of attention to detail, never mind the fact that you were not even
present at the conference championship, is unfair to us, it is unfair to
MSU, and it is unfair to all of the teams in our conference. We should not
have to double check everything you send out, but unfortunately we have had
to ever since you because our conference director.
Anyone who wishes to further discuss the matter with me can reach me at

Here's a short list of some of the errors we found in the scoring. The
correction of the first error alone (which I informed you of shortly after
Tunis) already increases UT's points enough to win the overall.
-Katie Forrest won Tunis-Roubaix as a Women's A, and we were not credited
with her 80 points (see the UT tab of the spreadsheet -- she is on the
official results, her team was listed incorrectly and I had already passed
this correction on to you)
-The results (and points) for the UT/St. Ed's weekend on your spreadsheet
do not even come close to resembling the actual results (I counted well over
20 errors). People received places (and points) who were not even at the
event. By plugging in the actual results received from the officials (and
sent to you), I get a weekend score of UT at 1718 and MSU at 1311.
I don't have time to go through the rest of the spreadsheet, but there are
other obvious errors, such as people at the Texas State race being given
points who were not present, incorrect points, and the wrong points schedule
being used for the TT. If you would like to declare a new winner, that's
fine, but only after the spreadsheet has been completely redone and verified
by both teams in competition.
I will not be at nationals due to finals, but you two are welcome to
meet. I would appreciate if I were consulted before anything is announced,
however, due to the large number of errors already found.
I apologize if this seems rude, as that was not my intent, but this is
something that should have been done correctly in the first place, and I'm
honestly tired of dealing with it.

We've calculated the points and found several errors in your scoring (one
of our riders who won Women's A at Tunis was not scored at all, and several
other things). We believe we've won by ~200 points, but Gary would like to
take a look at the points before he confirms this.

What do you mean? As announced, we won. Can I possibly see the 'new' final
points totals and what was changed?
