The Peace (Keepers) Prize

The Nobel committee did President Obama no favors by prematurely =20
awarding him its peace prize. As he himself acknowledged, he has not =20
done anything yet on the scale that would normally merit such an award =20=
=97 and it dismays me that the most important prize in the world has =20
been devalued in this way.
It is not the president=92s fault, though, that the Europeans are so =20
relieved at his style of leadership, in contrast to that of his =20
predecessor, that they want to do all they can to validate and =20
encourage it. I thought the president showed great grace in accepting =20=
the prize not for himself but =93as an affirmation of American =20
leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.=94
All that said, I hope Mr. Obama will take this instinct a step further =20=
when he travels to Oslo on Dec. 10 for the peace prize ceremony. Here =20=
is the speech I hope he will give:
=93Let me begin by thanking the Nobel committee for awarding me this =20
prize, the highest award to which any statesman can aspire. As I said =20=
on the day it was announced, =91I do not feel that I deserve to be in =20=
the company of so many of the transformative figures who=92ve been =20
honored by this prize.=92 Therefore, upon reflection, I cannot accept =20=
this award on my behalf at all.
=93But I will accept it on behalf of the most important peacekeepers in =20=
the world for the last century =97 the men and women of the U.S. Army, =20=
Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of the American soldiers who =20
landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, to liberate Europe from the =20
grip of Nazi fascism. I will accept this award on behalf of the =20
American soldiers and sailors who fought on the high seas and forlorn =20=
islands in the Pacific to free East Asia from Japanese tyranny in the =20=
Second World War.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of the American airmen who in June =
=20
1948 broke the Soviet blockade of Berlin with an airlift of food and =20
fuel so that West Berliners could continue to live free. I will accept =20=
this award on behalf of the tens of thousands of American soldiers who =20=
protected Europe from Communist dictatorship throughout the 50 years =20
of the cold war.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of the American soldiers who stand =
=20
guard today at outposts in the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan to =20=
give that country, and particularly its women and girls, a chance to =20
live a decent life free from the Taliban=92s religious totalitarianism.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of the American men and women who =20=
are still on patrol today in Iraq, helping to protect Baghdad=92s =20
fledgling government as it tries to organize the rarest of things in =20
that country and that region =97 another free and fair election.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of the thousands of American =20
soldiers who today help protect a free and Democratic South Korea from =20=
an unfree and Communist North Korea.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of all the American men and women =20=
soldiers who have gone on repeated humanitarian rescue missions after =20=
earthquakes and floods from the mountains of Pakistan to the coasts of =20=
Indonesia. I will accept this award on behalf of American soldiers who =20=
serve in the peacekeeping force in the Sinai desert that has kept =20
relations between Egypt and Israel stable ever since the Camp David =20
treaty was signed.
=93I will accept this award on behalf of all the American airmen and =20
sailors today who keep the sea lanes open and free in the Pacific and =20=
Atlantic so world trade can flow unhindered between nations.
=93Finally, I will accept this award on behalf of my grandfather, =20
Stanley Dunham, who arrived at Normandy six weeks after D-Day, and on =20=
behalf of my great-uncle, Charlie Payne, who was among those soldiers =20=
who liberated part of the Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald.
=93Members of the Nobel committee, I accept this award on behalf of all =20=
these American men and women soldiers, past and present, because I =20
know =97 and I want you to know =97 that there is no peace without =20
peacekeepers.
=93Until the words of Isaiah are made true and lasting =97 and nations =20=
never again lift up swords against nations and never learn war anymore =20=
=97 we will need peacekeepers. Lord knows, ours are not perfect, and I =20=
have already moved to remedy inexcusable excesses we=92ve perpetrated in =
=20
the war on terrorism.
=93But have no doubt, those are the exception. If you want to see the =20=
true essence of America, visit any U.S. military outpost in Iraq or =20
Afghanistan. You will meet young men and women of every race and =20
religion who work together as one, far from their families, motivated =20=
chiefly by their mission to keep the peace and expand the borders of =20
freedom.
=93So for all these reasons =97 and so you understand that I will never =20=
hesitate to call on American soldiers where necessary to take the =20
field against the enemies of peace, tolerance and liberty =97 I accept =20=
this peace prize on behalf of the men and women of the U.S. military: =20=
the world=92s most important peacekeepers.=94
