=v= Hey, J.D., I appreciate your comments, but I regret to
inform you that you're dealing with a chronic troll, who isn't
really interested in discourse. He's just trying to get some
attention, and the best way to deal with a troll is to ignore
it. I filtered this guy out years ago, and generally avoid the
flame-laden threads that he starts. A few people have asked me
who this nutcase is, though, and why he seems obsessed with me,
so I'll explain below (and anyone who cares to can confirm all
of it with a web search engine). Overall, really, the happiest
approach is to just *plonk* and ignore the troll.
=v= Tom Frost a.k.a. Bumpkin Bubba lives in rural northeastern
Pennsylvania and is actually multiple varieties of Internet
wingnut. He's a manifestoist as well as a troll. Years ago
he wrote up a simplistic bike advocacy document which he seems
to think was handed down to him from God. Basically it has
Two Commandments, though for some reason he calls it a "triad."
His longtime strategy has been to subscribe to an email list
and then pee in the punchbowl, kick up a fuss, basically flame
and troll -- until he thinks he's got everyone's attention, at
which point he'll post his manifesto. He may repost it multiple
times, in fact.
=v= Longtime subscribers to sfbike may remember past trolls such
as Logger/Sam Jensen and jhp. (Indeed, this guy, like jhp, got
some his trollbait by buddying up with and encouraging an Aryan
Nationalist on one of the carfree lists, which got him kicked
off.) This guy has been unsubscribed and banned from numerous
email lists for such behavior, though recently he's found a
bunch of lists with open policies or absentee moderators and has
been trolling up a storm.
=v= As I said, I think the best response is to ignore him,
but in this latest spate of posting he has emerged as another
variety of Internet wingnut: cyberstalker. He posts malicious
followups to my messages, or attacks me by name in other threads
(and indeed on random email lists where nobody even knows who I
am), prompting confused people to forward his messages to me.
=v= Since I've had him filtered for years and have thereby
avoided any interaction with him, I really don't know why he
has chosen to cyberstalk me. I suspect it's because of my
longtime advocacy and promotion of Critical Mass, which in his
mind "violates the triad." The moderator of the critical-mass
Yahoo! Group is also one of his targets.
=v= He recently brought up this jet fuel nonsense on another
Yahoo! Group (criticalmass2), and it was so loony I searched
the Yahoo! Group archives to see what he was talking about.
Apparently Mr. BumpkinFrost got his lycra in a bunch over the
fact that I travelled to NYC in the summer of 2003 to read from
and sign copies of the Critical Mass book. He jumped to the
conclusion that I flew there and drove cars to and from airports
along the way.
=v= Not that it matters what he thinks, but anyone who actually
cares and has a passing familiarity with a search engine knows
that I ride a Bike Friday, which fits in a suitcase, which
doubles as a bike trailer, obviating any need to drive a car
to the airport -- or, as is my practice, to the Amtrak station.
=v= So, two years later, he's misremembering his own babblings
as something I wrote. Which is really about all you need to
know about this character: he's not someone to rely on for
intelligent discourse. *Plonk* and ignore, and you and your
email list will be much happier for it.
<_Jym_>
P.S.: If you haven't read this far, I understand completely.
If you *have* read this far, I thank you and apologize for the
bandwidth and waste of time. I hope this shall serve as an
innoculation, rather than more troll fodder. This troll will,
undoubtedly, retaliate to this message by posting yet more of
his usual, probably to a dozen email lists. *Plonk* and ignore.
