Creativity Workout  Jeff Miller

Greetings...

Have you ever said something like, "that person sure is creative.", or
"I wish I had the ability to put ideas together like that."?

Well, you can. I think much of the really good problem solving and
solution generation our organizations and communities face can be helped
by some good doses of creative thinking. There also seems to be a fair
bit of research that says "brain workouts" can help ward off many of the
challenges that are associated with ageing.

Below is a snippet (and link to an article that may find to be of some
value). Give it a try and stretch that creative muscle that we all have.
You never know what you may learn or discover!

Be well... /jeff

GIVE YOUR BRAIN A CREATIVITY WORKOUT

Nancy Andreasen, a University of Iowa neuroscientist and author of
"The Creating Brain: The Neuroscience of Genius," says her research
suggests that during creative moments, people often slip into a zone in
which ideas and thoughts generate freely in a random way, heightening
the activity in a part of the brain known as the association cortex.
That brain region known to be capable of linking up ideas or thoughts in
potentially novel ways. To give your brain a creativity workout,
Andreasen recommends branching out in your interests and exploring an
area outside your familiar space. For example, if you do a lot of math
on the job, try signing up for
a painting class. Spend part of each day just thinking. Don't censor
your thoughts -- just let them flow around a problem and see what ideas
surface.

Practice the art of paying attention -- look for and truly observe
something in your realm of familiarity that you may not have noticed
before, and try describing it or sketching it in a journal. And finally,
use your imagination -- daydream a little each day imagining a different
world, what it would look like, and what you would do there. All good
suggestions for keeping your creativity engine fired up! (USA Today 27
