Dear Takenobu Takizawa,

Thank you the information about the 6 games. I wonder why your email did
not post to the shogi list?

Well, I think I did post it to the shogi-l mailing list...

Has someone translated the articles by Kato and Shimizugami in the
Yomiuri Shimbun (Newspaper)?
I do not know. I read it on Japanese version of the Yomiuri shimbun
(Newspaper).

I found information about Gekisashi at the 18th Amateur Ryo tournament.
Reijer Grimbergen wrote in the shogi list that Gekisashi played 5 games.
Gekisashi beat Okamoto and Ogawa in the preliminaries. Gekisashi beat
Ogawa again and lost to Tanaka in the knock-out. Gekisashi beat Nara
amateur 6-dan from Shinoda in an exhibition game. He did not say
Gekisashi played Kato.
Actually, after beaten by Tanaka, Gekisashi beat Shinoda amateur 6 dan
from Nara prefecture. Then Gekisashi played against Kato (and was
beaten).

Subject: Yomiuri article on CSA 18 Exhibition Match

I saw an article about the exhibition games of the CSA 18 in the online
Yomiuri newspaper. The article was Can advanced shogi software
defeat
professional players? June 27, 2008

The article said Kato, 26, and Shimizugami, 28, both sixth-grade

amateur players, had beaten the software in their previous six
games.
What previous 6 games are they talking about?

(1) June 26, 2005. The 18th Amateur Ryo tournament exhibition game
Kato vs. Gekisashi (40 min + 40 sec byoyomi)
(2) March 8, 2006. Special event at the 68th IPSJ annual conference
Shimizugami vs. Gekisashi (40 min + 40 sec byoyomi)
(3) May 5, 2006. The 16th WCSC exhibition game
Kato vs. Bonanz (15 min + 30 sec byoyomi)
(4),(5) November 18, 2006. Special event on Bonanza commercial version
     release, two games
Shimizugami vs. Bonanza, and Kato vs. Bonanza
                  (20 min + 30 sec byoyomi, each)
(6) May 5, 2007. The 17th WCSC exhibition game
Kato vs. YSS (15 min + 30 sec byoyomi)

Kato said "This time, the software made no wasteful moves". Sounds like
Kato was expecting the computer to be weaker. Maybe he did not prepared
enough.

Yoshimasa Tsuruoka said it will take two to three years for it
to catch
up with lower class professional players in one-hour games. I hope it
will reach the level of Ryuo and Meijin tournament title holders in five

to six years.

Meanwhile, Akira Watanabe, said "I will defeat shogi software for the
next 10 years". A tournament with Akira Watanabe would be interesting. I

hope such a tournament will be permitted.

Did Kato and Shimizugami analyze their exhibition games at the CSA
tournament?

They are writing a couple of articles on the Yomiuri Shimbun
(Newspaper).
