<> 1 <> WHAT NO DREAMS?

Maybe all 388 of you got tired of millennium fever or were just
plain busy?

Maybe I asked too many questions?

And maybe that's just what I am doing again?

The survey at the end of last year got ZERO response :-(

So now you have had plenty of time to think about it,
here's your second opportunity to dream!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :-) mmmmmmmm :-)

Yes it's dream time again!

?? What would you really, really like to find on the web this
year?

?? What kind of website or internet-based resource would really
help or inspire you in your work?

?? What kind of internet facility would make a real difference to
your continuing professional development?

?? A single web page (or 'portal') where you can find everything
you want in one place? If so, what are the top items on your
'everything' list? Which sites currently get closest to meeting
your needs? How could they be better?

?? Instant answers to your questions - about finding a person, a
job, equipment, a book, an article, legal advice, insurance?

?? Chat rooms or discussion lists to meet people with similar
interests? If so what particular interests would you like to
explore in this way?

?? In depth articles about topical issues delivered by email? If
so, what kind of topics would you like to read about in this way?

?? Interviews with interesting people? If so, which interesting
people? Or what kinds of interesting people? Would you just like
to read the interviews, or would you also like to ask some
questions? What questions would you like to ask? And to whom?

?? Authoritative answers to common questions such as

''What EVIDENCE is there that adventure/experiential learning is
effective?''

''What is the SAFETY record of outdoor/adventure learning
programs?''

''What COMPETENCIES and qualifications are needed to enter and
progress in this industry?''

''Where can I find an index of the latest RESEARCH findings?''

?? Great ideas about how to convince 'non-believers' that
'experiential' approaches are worthwhile - and that they should
support you in what you do AND try out some of these more dynamic
methods themselves.

?? What words or phrases or questions do YOU type into search
engine boxes only to find ... disappointment :-(

The web is what we make it. What do YOU want to make it? By
sharing your dreams with other SiteFinder readers two things can
happen:

1) Another helpful subscriber will tell you that your dreams have
already been answered and will give you a helpful link to a site
that you didn't know existed (or didn't know had improved so
much).

2) You will find other dreamers dreaming the same dreams. That's
a good start for creating new realities!

A 10% response to this request to share your dreams will bring in
nearly 40 responses - and an interesting next issue of
SiteFinder. Start dreaming and tapping away!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :-)

mmmmmmmm :-)

!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

One answer to just one question is enough.
But don't let me stop you answering two questions!

Please send your 'dreams' to me at:
send
with the subject line 'Dreams'

2 < NEW IMPROVED SEARCHABLE ARCHIVES

I was thinking of doing a 'Best of 99' issue - but now that the
archives are so much easier to search, you can quickly find what
you want in old issues.

This is the BEST way to search the archives.

From the home page at http://reviewing.co.uk

1. SELECT 'archives' from the drop down box

2. TYPE in what you are searching for

3. HIT the 'Search' button and choose from the results

ALTERNATIVELY (if you prefer to use an INDEX)

Go to http://reviewing.co.uk/archives/
from where you can choose
the INDEX or the SEARCH BOX

I welcome feedback on this new facility.

<> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>

3 < NEW IMPROVED SITEFINDER DIRECTORY

Too many changes to mention! Please take a look and tell me what
you think.

The old index/search page (websites/hi.htm) is gone - so please
change your bookmark or link if you happen to have one!

The new location is http://reviewing.co.uk/sitefinder/

You can also search it direct from the home page of
http://reviewing.co.uk by selecting 'SiteFinder Directory' from
the drop down search box.

This greater visibility and searchability will help to make this
directory a more popular resource. Please do what you can to make
it so too :-)

A NEW FORUM

Outdoor Training Discussion Forum
http://forum.trainingzone.co.uk/~TrainingZONE

This facility is a brilliant combination of 'web' and 'email'.
You can ask to be sent copies of any new messages that arrive.
And you can be even more selective and just ask to be sent emails
about just one of the discussion threads.

For example, you can ask your question and click a button so that you
only
get answers to your question. What a service! (All it needs is more
people
using it. Why not take a look and test it out with your question?

To receive updates about the outdoor training discussion at trainingZONE
...

Click 'MORE' at the top of the page.
A list of options appears
Select the 4th option ''Email Notification''
Check the ''Outdoor Training'' box.
Click Save.
You will now receive email notification of any messages that
appear in the Outdoor Training section of the Web Board.

This is where to start:
http://forum.trainingzone.co.uk/~TrainingZONE

Here's one of the latest messages at the Outdoor Training Web
Board ...

ADVENTURE NETWORK
I (Dig) am organising an Adventure Network in September this year
which aims to bring together all OMD trainers for a get together.
Aiming to look at our own development needs and exploring issues
like "what does industry want from us"? Should be an excellent
forum for you to make contact with plenty of people. Drop me your
details and I'll put you on the mail list and anyone else you
know who maybe interested.
Dig Woodvine mailto:xc-@clevermonkey.freeserve.co.uk

Don't miss this opportunity to network (face to face!) with other
OMD (outdoor management development) people in the UK - if you
happen to be one.

David Blunkett's (UK Secretary of State for Education) made a new
year speech that may have signalled new funding for outdoor
education for young people. That's what the newspapers seemed to
think. But the word 'outdoor' didn't appear once in the whole
speech!. The full speech can be found at
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/speech1/foreword.shtml
(text or mp3 - audio)

Is this speech encouraging or discouraging for outdoor education?

He mentions that there used to be a "more extensive programme of
structured and challenging activity". What is he referring to?

With his emphasis on:
- motivation
- developing learning skills
- assisting transition
- confidence
- leadership skills
- team working
this seems to be more about ''development training'' than it is
about ''outdoor education''.

The word 'outdoor' or 'outdoors' is not used, but 'experience'
appears several times e.g.
- a range of different approaches to teaching and learning
- travel and new experiences
- extended opportunities for experience in the world of work
This looks like a vote for experience-based learning - with or
without the outdoors - and with a strong emphasis on
interpersonal skills and developing confidence and motivation.

If you have any views or questions on the subject, the place to
go is:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/outcurriculum/
or
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/outres/
This topic is being discussed on both lists.
