AN EXCUSE NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Site Reviews will usually be a major feature of this newsletter.
This long delayed issue contains only a few very brief review
comments - in what has turned out to be a 'bumper' edition.

I have been doing more real travel than virtual travel this year.
I have managed to maintain the steadily growing SiteFinder
Directory, but this 'monthly' ezine has not been published for
several months. I apologise for this long absence, but I hope
that this issue marks the return to lunar months and more regular
publication.

I expect I have missed a lot of newsworthy developments - (the
internet has probably doubled in size) - so I hope you will let
me and other SiteFinder subscribers know about your favourite
corners of cyberspace - for outdoor educators and researchers,
adventure trainers and facilitators, active learners and other
generally switched on people who are keen about
experiential learning.

I am sure you will find some links to click in this issue - if
only because there are far more links than usual. Future issues
will include detailed reviews of the best sites and resources -
especially if a few subscribers (possibly you) point me in the
right direction or (better still) write a sentence or two about a
site or resource you like and send it to rog-@reviewing.co.uk

1 < OUTDOOR RESEARCH ON THE WEB A-Z

The last 'research' issue of SiteFinder was almost a year ago.
Many new sites have been added to the list since then, mostly
thanks to James Neill's diligence. Thank you James!

If your interests don't include research - Pg Dn (skip this bit).

If you know of a useful internet resource or web page about
outdoor education research that is not listed here, please write
to: rog-@reviewing.co.uk

Adding a link is a great way to say thank you and will be
appreciated by other outdoor education researchers. I hope these
links (to pages and people) help you to enjoy your research in
outdoor education - and get a distinction! If you publish your
own outdoor education research on the web (or can send out
electronic copies) please let us know. There is no excuse for
outdoor education research to be gathering dust in this
electronic age! Make your outdoor education research available
and help this scattered outdoor research community gather
momentum, not dust!

2 < TRACKERS' TIPS: HOW TO FIND PDF FILES ON THE WEB

PDF = Portable Document Format = nice looking magazine style
pages that you are unlikely to find using your normal search
engine. PDF often means high quality content too - so they are
worth looking for. You can now search for over a million PDF
documents using the new Adobe PDF Search Engine.

I tried just one search and instantly came up with 'adventure
education' documents. Try your own search terms and tell us if
you find any PDF files that you can recommend.

Adobe PDF Search Engine
http://searchpdf.adobe.com

Two more ways to find articles on the web are:
http://www.findarticles.com
http://www.northernlight.com/power.html
Use the 'Save This Search As Alert' and you will receive an email
as new pages appear in your search results.

You will also find a lot of articles in > 1 < above.

 3 < SITEOWNERS' TIPS: WEB-BASED PHOTO SERVICES

Did you know that you can send your 35mm films or digital photos
to be processed and stored on the web for free? The convenience
of these services opens up countless possibilities for promoting
your website and your services and generally adding value and
interest to what you do. Even a sense of community?

4 < NEW ENTRIES IN SITEFINDER DIRECTORY

Most entries below are new. Some are updates.
All descriptions below are by the siteowners themselves.

Amongst the new entries I can especially recommend:

 The Outdoor Network
- the best one stop resource for outdoor educators

 Impact Development Training Group
- for a stunning and stylish audio visual entry to the site
(easily skipped on subsequent visits) and superb navigation

 Camp America
- probably the most effective website for achieving its goal -
and it does this very simply AND by providing some real insights
into what the experience is like. It looks like a very effective
use of story-based testimonials.

 ChooseSport
- as a gateway to adventure sports in the UK it's the site I am
most likely to use to find my next challenge

You will find links to these sites in the listing below.

I haven't yet browsed through all the new sites in SiteFinder
Directory - so there could be MANY more sites that deserve
recommendations - and full reviews.

If you happen to visit any of these sites on your virtual
travels, please send me your comments - especially if you find
sites (or bits of sites) that you can recommend.

When recommending sites please remember what SiteFinder Directory
is about ... SiteFinder Directory was established to help you
track down the best internet resources for learning about
adventure education and experiential learning.

Some excellent sites are finding there way into the directory.
Please let others know about sites you can recommend by

 5 < DREAMS LIVE ON

Seen on the back of the runner in front:
''The determination in your heroic effort will permeate your mind
and heart even after your success or failure is long forgotten.
Sri Chinmoy''

I would like to thank the 7 subscribers who responded to my
'dreams' survey way back at the start of the millennium.

I hope your dreams are still alive and that some of your wishes
are being fulfilled. I know that some of the material in this
issue will be making some of you happy.

I would like to edit the responses into a report for the next
issue of SiteFinder - and will be writing to the magnificent 7
about this.

What was 'dreams' all about? See the next issue.

6 < ONLINE ADVENTURES AND VIRTUAL EXPEDITIONS

This 'Adventure Learning' page is a great place to start all
kinds of adventures - virtual and real. It is part of
WorldWideLearn - ''a directory of online courses and learning
resources which are available from around the world and in almost
every topic you want.''

I was surprised to find such comprehensive coverage of
'adventure' in this directory of web-based learning
opportunities. I was even more surprised to find the Adventure
and Experiential Education Directory listed!

If I hunt around this directory for long enough I wonder just how
much I could learn. Could I learn a new adventure sport sat in
front of a screen? (or carrying a waterproof WAP phone?) When
will the governing bodies of adventure sports catch up with the
worlds of virtual rock climbing and virtual sky diving and
require instructors to have certificates for virtual adventure
training?

The weather is too good for me to explore these virtual issues
just now, but you can at ...
