<=> FROM THE EDITOR: Mapping the World

Adventure Plus (this newsletter) is about mapping the world -
mapping the world of outdoor and experiential learning as
represented on the world wide web. With this map you will
appreciate more about what is available and you will be able to
navigate quickly to where you want to go.

I am mapping and sharing the findings as I discover new goodies
on my occasional journeys into cyberspace. The finding of the
month just has to be http://www.kartoo.com - a new meta search
engine launched at the end of April.

What's so exciting about another new search engine? Well, this
one presents the results in the form of a colourful mind map. If
you like mind maps you'll be sure to visit it. If you need more
persuading, read my review below.

I hope you have seen 'The Earth From the Air' by Yann
Arthus-Bertrand. My copy is the 365 day version - a different
photograph for every day of the year and lots of messages about
environmental sustainability. Yes, it would be a better example
if he hadn't used all that aircraft fuel, but walking round the
world and taking pictures from a step ladder wouldn't have quite
the same impact. See http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com

Yann didn't do take all these pictures on his own. Mapping (or
photographing) the world is a team effort. So I am pleased to
include a letter from Rick Curtis who would like some help in
developing his already excellent resource at
http://www.outdoored.com

Mapping the world of outdoor and experiential learning on the web
can only be succesful as a co-operative enterprise.

And there are always surprises. Surprise of the month is a report
of the INDOOR adventure racing championships (see 4 below). What
next? Indoor expeditions?

 1 < LETTER: OutdoorEd.com

A letter from Rick Curtis, Webmaster, OutdoorEd.com ...

I am writing to my colleagues and friends in experiential
education to ask for your help and support in building the
OutdoorEd.com Web site into a world class resource.

It started as a small idea, building a little Web site, something
I was just tinkering with. Then once I got started it began to
grow and take on a life of its own. I began to see more and more
possibilities for interaction and collaboration and how a central
hub of information could become a real Knowledge Base for our
field. It's been two years now in development and the first stage
of the site is finally where I have wanted it to be.

That's why I am writing to ask you for your help. The goal of
building OutdoorEd.com was to create an opportunity for people in
the field of outdoor and experiential education to come together
and share information, ideas, and knowledge. In the past I've
shared all the things I've written about outdoor education at the
Outdoor Action Web site at Princeton but I always knew there was
so much knowlege out that that other people had that I wished
could learn and benefit from. It always frustrated me that I
couldn't get to it and that's why I started building the
OutdoorEd.com site.

The technological underpinnings are all in place for a Web site
that allows the free exchange and sharing of information. Now I
need your help to make it grow. I'd like to get your support by
asking you to contribute something you've written to the site, an
article, a journal piece, curriculum, protocol, etc. I want to
see this site grow exponentially in the next three months. Please
take a few minutes and send me something to add to the site. The
easiest way to do that is just to email it to me directly
(sta-@outdoored.com). If you have an idea for something new
you'd like to write, please email me. I really appreciate your
working with me to make this a truly great resource.

Featured Article - Conducting Internal Incident Reviews:
A process for developing wilderness incident case studies

Most programs have put into place extensive risk management plans
to prevent incidents but have you thought about what happens
after the incident. How are you going to figure out what
happened, gather data, etc. Kurt Merrill and Kris Wright from the
Student Conservation Association present an in-depth incident
review process to help you systematically collect high quality
information after an incident.

 2 < TRACKERS' TIPS: Kartoo

http://www.kartoo.com/
If you like mind mapping you will love Kartoo - launched at the
end of April. Kartoo turns searching into an art form. The
results are shown as planets of different sizes (large = greatest
relevance) joined by colourful curvy strings.

What surprised me most was how fast and functional such an
artistic meta search engine can be. I suspect that it is the most
efficient way of refining your search because it is continually
suggesting the most relevant search terms to add or avoid. By
moving your cursor around the map you can instantly see which
words are associated with which sites - and vice versa.

It is far from being just a 'pretty' version of the way in which
results are normally listed. The mind map patterning provides
information about relationships and concepts that is not
available in other meta search engines - even those like
www.vivismo.com which group your results in 'subject' folders.

It is the best use of flash technology I have seen on the web -
because it is so quick and user friendly and displays information
in such intuitive ways. You won't pick up all the features by
intuition - but you will find an excellent help file. Don't be
distracted by the occasional French word. If everything is French
(and you would prefer the English version) just click on the
flag.

I found little to criticise, but I have a suspicion that website
domain names count too highly in Kartoo's ranking system.

The reasons I would choose to use Kartoo:

1) To quickly develop a search string for refining difficult
searches

2) To learn more about the subject from the automatically
generated conceptual maps

3) To enjoy a different way of searching with colourful maps and
without scrolling.

I think Kartoo will be my favourite starting point, but I will
not be giving up Google just yet.

My current favourite search sites are:
Kartoo http://www.kartoo.com
Google http://www.google.com
Vivisimo http://vivisimo.com
Ixquick http://www.ixquick.com
Teoma http://www.teoma.com
Wisenut http://www.wisenut.com

3 < FINDING CONFERENCES and CONFERENCE REPORTS

Are you looking for a good conference? Are you looking to widen
your network? Are you wanting to find out what happened at a
conference you wish you had attended? Are you looking for
conference papers?

I was recently attempting to do all of these things. It was hard
work! It shouldn't be. So I have collected together a list of all
the conference information sites that I could find (in the field
of outdoor and experiential learning) and listed them in the left
sidebar at: http://reviewing.co.uk/outdoor/notices.htm

If it was a competition for the best conference calendars there
would be three clear winners way ahead of the rest:

http://www.unh.edu/outdoor-education/conferences.html
http://www.outdoornetwork.com/calendar/
http://www.outdoored.com/conferences/Default.asp

All are based in the USA, but all sites also list conferences in
other parts of the world. Each site has different ways of
searching their calendars.

None of the UK sites I found are updated regularly and none are
easy to search. The best I could find were:
http://www.outdoor-learning.org (select regions, then events or
use Google's site search)
http://www.bluedome.co.uk (use Google's site search)
http://www.outdoor-solutions.co.uk/conf_sym.html

The most searchable sites are generally those of the
organisations providing the conferences - but don't expect to
find information conferences hosted by other organisations.
