I thoroughly enjoyed another wonderful evening with Stacey Earle and
Mark Stuart last night. Stacey and Mark’s gift to us was to bring out
Steve Mead from England to read us a Gilbert (of Gilbert & Sullivan
fame) poem, another poem by someone I can't remember, an excerpt from
Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” and sing a song for us. Stacey and Mark
met Steve in London at a party where Steve showed up to entertain in the
old English tradition of mummers. He was very good with great facial
expressions, but I think that the audience, a good-sized crowd for a
midweek Freight show, was happy to get to the main event.

Stacey announced that as of December 1 she and Mark begin to officially
work as a duo. Stacey toured earlier this year without her husband,
Mark, touring with her brother Steve. They played an excellent set
drawing on their now four CDs (including Mark’s CD “Songs from a Corner
Stage”).   I liked the lead off tune “In My Way” a lot, also the solo
tunes by Mark, a new one that I guess is called “Fool’s Gold” and his
nice George Harrison tribute “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with a tag
of “Here Comes the Sun” at the end. Mark mentioned some of the
wonderful musicians that have passed away in the last year before
playing the Harrison tune, including Chet Atkins, Roy Nichols, Grady
Martin and John Lee Hooker in addition to Harrison. Stacey played a new
one, solo, that she wrote when in New York on tour with her brother,
called (I think) “Man in the Moon”. Another highlight was the a capella
closer of the traditional gospel “That Old Gospel Ship”. Mark joined at
the end, Stacey and Mark holding hands. Stacey was really singing on
this one, she probably wouldn’t have even needed a microphone! Another
highlight of the evening for me was a long solo guitar break by Mark on
“Cancha Dance.” Mark and Stacey work so well together, I am really
happy they’ve decided to make it official as a duo!

Mark and Stacey will be at cozy Henfling’s in Ben Lomond, CA, near Santa
Cruz this evening (www.henflings.com) with Steve Mead again and then
Mead will join them in Santa Monica at McCabe’s.
