Hmm. I think the stock fusible link is supposed to be rated at 30 A, so
that seems like a safe starting point. If your electrical system is all
stock still that should be fine, but if you've got electrical add-ons,
especially high-power things like a winch, then it could get more
involved. I think I read that a battery should never be charged at greater
than 30 A, so if you're running a non-stock alternator, then you might
want to go with several different fuses, arranged like this:
stock harness-(30 A)-+
battery--+--(30 A)---+
starter--| |
|
alternator--(90 A)---+
winch----------------+
other high-power-----+
That way, your stock harness and battery are protected from having too
much current flowing through them. The starter is wired as they always
are, and we hope that the motor doesn't short out. :) The alternator gets
a fuse corresponding to its actual rating, and all the high-power stuff
connects right there so that it can use the high output rating of the
alternator without worry of drawing too much current through too-small
wire. The only potential problem would be if you tried to run something
high-powered while the alt wasn't running, then you'd likely exceed the
30A fuse protecting the battery.
