Another bicyclist killed in possible DUI
Victim may be Sonoma man; Cobb motorist arrested

By Randi Rossmann
The Press Democrat

A week after a bicyclist was killed in east Santa Rosa by a suspected
drunken driver, a second bicyclist was struck and killed Monday by a
driver believed to be intoxicated, the CHP said.

The bicyclist was killed as he apparently rode east along Mark West
Springs Road, west of Riebli Road, and possibly was sideswiped by the
passing driver, CHP Officer Shannon King said.

Officers were attempting to confirm the victim's identity, but King
said he may be a 43-year-old Sonoma man.

It was unclear whether the driver, William Michael Albertson, 46, of
Cobb, knew he hit the man, King said.

Officers and firefighters at the scene of the 5:20 p.m. crash didn't
know the bicyclist had been hit until they were about to leave.

The accident initially had been reported as a solo crash involving a
pickup, which had spun out on Mark West Springs Road.

Officers found Albertson out of his pickup and acting belligerently,
King said. He was taken into custody for not cooperating with
officers, she said.

"As everybody was getting ready to clear the scene, and the Fire
Department was leaving, they saw the bicyclist in a construction zone
on the opposite side of the guardrail," she said.

Rescue workers rushed over but the bicyclist was dead, she said.

King said officers were investigating how fast Albertson was driving
and other circumstances of the accident. She said the pavement may
have been wet.

Because of Albertson's behavior and an odor of alcohol, officers took
him to a local hospital, where he submitted to a blood test, King
said.

While test results weren't available, Albertson was arrested on
suspicion of drunken driving and being uncooperative and was booked
into the Sonoma County Jail, she said. He also could face a
manslaughter charge if the investigation confirms he was intoxicated
and hit the bicyclist, she said.

Albertson was being held without bail because his arrest violated his
parole, details of which were unavailable Monday night, jail
officials said.

Santa Rosa resident Harvey Hereford, 69, is facing charges in the
Easter morning death of a 31-year-old South Bay man who died after
being hit by a car while riding along Highway 12 near Oakmont.

Officers said Hereford was seen weaving and speeding on the highway
just before striking Alan Liu. They said Hereford then hit Liu's
girlfriend Jill Mason, 26, of Cupertino, who suffered major injuries
and remains hospitalized.

The pair were training for a triathlon and were out for a morning
ride.

Monday's death is the third this year involving a bicyclist. The
first death involved a collision between two cyclists.

CHP investigators ask that any witnesses to Monday's crash call
officers at 707-588-1400.
