I agree that to refuse to participate is a good, basic way to protest --
e.g. not driving, not watching TV, not buying from chains -- but isn't there
also a need to point out that extreme behaviors -- e.g. buying Hummers,
accepting or supporting war, etc. -- aren't OK? Hummer buyers and those who
admire them think extreme behavior is good (for them). Lots of people think
it's good to make weapons and wage war. We are all afraid of these people.
I can't be in the path of any size car because it will kill me. Worse if
the driver is on the phone or speeding or just hates cyclists. So I stop
riding on certain roads at certain hours. I give in because I'm afraid. To
me the Hummer is the aggressive symbol of their victory.

No -- none of us can afford to stand out on the side. None of
us are "without sin" on this one. Hummers are part of a core problem,
which is an ultra-consumption-based economy. People often
use anti-Hummerism, anti-SUVism, anti-anythingism as an excuse
to justify their own unjustifiable behavior.
