Oh yeah?
What about us Buddhist monks that don't drive cars and only use bikes
for transportation?
| | No -- none of us can afford to stand out on the side. None of
us are "without sin" on this one. Hummers are part of a core problem,
which is an ultra-consumption-based economy. People often
use anti-Hummerism, anti-SUVism, anti-anythingism as an excuse
to justify their own unjustifiable behavior.
"Those guys are the problem, not me. They're all evil-doers...."
Hummers are just a different level of magnutude on
a continuous scale. SUV owners use Hummers as an example.
Car drivers use SUV's. Motorcyclists use cars. Public
transit users use motor vehicles. On and on. How do any
of us compare to a Buddist monk? It's a scale, and we
find our position on it.
The more global issue of hyperconsumption needs to be addressed.
Picking on a visible minority doesn't accomplish this.
