Re: NY Post Editorial on BBC  John A. Figliozzi

I plead guilty, Joe! I misused the word "canard". I meant to use it as
a term describing an occurrence that is not emblematic of a condition it
is being used to exemplify. But, according to Webster, "canard" means "a
false or unfounded story; a fabricated story". As you correctly point
out, Gilligan's report was indeed incorrect. (However, I still don't
think that this event in any way bolsters or proves the Post's assertion.)

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.....   :-)

Again, it would be nice if the Post could come up with just one
meaningful (and accurate) example. This one is a canard.>>>>

As our friends up in Quebec would say, "If it walks like a duck and
quacks like a duck it
must be a canard."

I do remember that day clearly. I was listening to the reports on
BBCWS while watching
the coverage from the embeded TV crews at the airport. The BBC reporter
in Baghdad was
echoing "Comical Ali's" report. Gilligan did not have any way to see
what the world was
seeing on TV. The anchor guy in London, to his credit, was appropriately
skeptical of the
report he was hearing from downtown Baghdad and communicated that in the
tone of his
questions.

"This was not an intelligence officer as the BBC claimed, but a
government scientist named David Kelly. Kelly committed suicide in
early

July after testifying to Parliament, prompting an independent inquiry
into the whole affair."

What the Post leaves unmentioned here is the government's (and
perhaps the PM's) role is "outing" Kelly. This would seem crucial to
any

 truthful analysis of the matter.>>>>>

I agree with your observation but I do think Kelly was an intelligence
officer which is
the real lie the Post makes here. Kelly was a member of the inspection
team looking for
WMD before the overt invasion began. The heat was on him to talk. If
Kelly committed
suicide, that would be consistent with his duty not to reveal his true
chain of command.
If Kelly did not commit suicide, that would be consistent with his chain
of command,
fearing of being outed by Kelly, sparing him the trouble of doing himself
in. Where is
Robert Ludlum when we need him?

As long as we are Murdock bashing, the Post also ran a story today
about how the fledgling
liberal talk radio network was not going to be successful. There is a
link to the story
from DrudgeReport.com.
