Have you ever played the game "Things I Would Take..."? We do it with our teens as an ice breaker. We usually do it with camping i.e. "Things I would take camping" but it can be adapted for any place. It works like this: you start by saying "I am going to a desert island and I am taking an apple". Then the next person says "I am going to a desert island and I am taking a banana", then the next and the next. The goal is for all participants to figure out a pattern. You will need some players to know what the pattern is in advance, but the fun comes when the players are trying to figure out the pattern while playing the game. For this example, the pattern is alphabetical (I am taking an apple, the next person is taking a banana, the next a cat, the next a dog, etc). If the next person in line says "I am going to a desert island and I am taking Suitcase", he or she would be "out" of the game, because the player had not figured out the pattern in time. We have also set up the game using the first letter of the player's name (I would only take things to the desert island that began with H, for example, but Amber would only take things beginning with the letter A. Players would have to figure this out during the game). When someone does not guess the pattern in time (for instance, the player bringing a suitcase when he/she should have brought something which begins with the letter E), you simply say "nope" or "no you aren't" or whatever. Some of our teens come up with really crazy things to bring places and that is where the creativity and the fun comes in. The crazier and most unlikely (or, in some cases, likely) items make the pattern harder to figure out, but it makes the fun factor even higher! It's also a good way to get to know your teens because they will chose items that usually say something about themselves and it will get them talking to each other, if that is your goal. The game can last for several rounds (until everyone figures it out) or just for one round. The duration depends on you and your players. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Subject: {TAGAD-L} Desert Island Game?
Does anyone have a fun, fairly short, game or activity relating to being stranded on a desert island? I have a Kids Book Club (ages 9 - 12) and we are reading Kensuke's Kingdom for next month. I know that's a bit younger then teen but I thought maybe I could adapt something for a younger group. I have one activity that is for adults about going through a list of supplies after having a boat sink but that's not quite a desert island scenario. Any ideas accepted with gratitude!
