Re: Strong Personalities  Wendy Rowe

Last year I had one 10th graders who was argumentative. She gained a little
support from her best friend and I found myself trying to defend policy for
half of a meeting. I later emailed these girls and asked to talk with them
for a few minutes before the next meeting. When I met with them
(separately) I explained that we needed to stay in line with policy - that's
all, no arguing. We needed to discuss current business of TAG, be positive
and not get side-tracked. Finally, I told them if they felt they could not
work with the group under our policies they may need to consider stepping
down. They continued on until the end of the school year, and were much
better. I did not have them return this year - and in my opinion it is
better for the whole group not to have to deal with someone who was always
not satisfied.

Subject: {TAGAD-L} Strong Personalities

Hi, All:

Please excuse the cross-posting.

I am new to running a TAG, and I have a bit of a dilemma. Our TAG is
predominantly high schoolers. We have one girl who is an extremely
dominant personality; she speaks for the whole group, talks throughout
the meeting with her friends about whatever she wants to talk about and
is sarcastic and somewhat disrespectful to me. We also have a young man
who likes to play the rebel and mouth off.

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions/ideas for dealing
with a situation like this? I have some ideas, but I'd like to hear
from people with actual experience.

Thanks!
