Our group has disbanded, but I'll throw this out there anyway. We took
a really laid back approach to the TAB business and didn't have meeting
rules. When things got out of hand, I had the most success speaking to
kids individually, outside of the meeting. I tried not to call out kids
in front of each other.
Also, as others have mentioned, calling directly upon quiet kids (or
kids who are getting drowned out by your problem children) may help. It
helps redirect focus.
When all else fails? A massive attention getter. I climbed up and
stood on a table once and told them to FOCUS! We actually got quite a
bit done at the rest of that meeting. Be warned, this will only work
once.
You might just need to cozy right up with your troublemaker (a seat
right next to them or straight across from them) and make sure they know
your eyes are on them. I'm not a mom, but working with teens helped me
develop my "mom glare". :)

Hi, All:
Please excuse the cross-posting.
I am new to running a TAG, and I have a bit of a dilemma. Our TAG
is
predominantly high schoolers. We have one girl who is an extremely
dominant personality; she speaks for the whole group, talks
throughout
the meeting with her friends about whatever she wants to talk about
and
is sarcastic and somewhat disrespectful to me. We also have a
young man
who likes to play the rebel and mouth off.
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions/ideas for
dealing
with a situation like this? I have some ideas, but I'd like to
hear
from people with actual experience.
Thanks!
