RE: Parents at meetings  Natalie M. Struecker

For the food. She was at the 'Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae' we had last week to celebrate Teen Read Week and to introduce me to the teens (I just started at this library). She was rather huffy that I had a sign on the door that said 'Teens (11-18) only please.' She comes for the food.

I always allow parents at any of my programs. I make it clear, however, that they can’t contribute ideas, eat food, or participate. They have to sit at the back of the room or off to the side.

I also point out to them that teens feel more comfortable speaking up if only members are present. Even if they think their child doesn’t mind, the other teens just might.

Why would a parent want to come to the meeting?   Programs I can see, but a meeting?

Have any of you run into parents who come to your Teen Advisory Board meetings like they're members too? I've never run into this before, and I'm at a loss at how to politely tell this particular parent she isn't suppose to join in.

Thanks,
Natalie
