The Boston Globe just let me know that they've accepted my pitch for an
800-word article on the future of book metadata. Excellent...except they
want it by Monday. Ulp.
I plan on writing about:
- Why Dewey, LoC and ISBN aren't particularly well designed for online
archives/access
- Some set of alternatives, including perhaps xISBN, PURL, Skywalk, DOI.
I'm not aiming at being comprehensive. Rather, I want to find
interesting examples. But I do NOT want to leave out the big, obvious,
important one that I've never heard of. What am I missing?
- Google Print (anyone have any contacts there?)
- Why this matters.
If you care to steer me away from errors, point me in promising
directions, put wax in my ears to protect me from the sirens, or just
generally beat some sense into me, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.
