FROM THE EDITOR'S PEN
by Kathryn Magendie
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
There is the contradictory way, both calculated and chaotic, in which
writers inhabit the world; how we observe with an egocentric writer’s
eye. There is the near-constant inner narration, as if watching life
from a lofty perch; and conversely, there is the real world we
experience. We witness the realities and then we record our version.
Enter into a writer’s line of sight, whether obliquely or directly, and
become embedded in our rapid-fire-synaptic whirly-world sub-consciously
conscious brain, where anything or anyone can fall victim to the
writer’s subsequent literary scribblings. Every move, flinch, tic; every
wish, dream, desire; every unique phrase, laugh, cry—all of it is fodder
for the writer.
The universe in my head, where I am Supreme Being, is more familiar to
me than the physical world. Yet I watch keenly; dissect with my
creative-edged scalpel and poke to see what lies inside. Even the simple
act of a stranger passing briefly by becomes the subject of my theft; I
steal their expression, their walk, their humanessence. I smile, nod,
speak, I surreptitiously inhale soulspirit—a literary vampire.
There are books, such as “The Writer’s Life,” (edited by Carol Edgarian
and Tom Jenks, Vintage Books, 1997), in which writers attempt to make
sense of a literary existence that can at times be cruel and lonesome;
but we want no other life, we know no other way. Know this: without
remorse we writers will calculatingly use whatever means necessary to
shoulder through the chaos to discover the stories within. It is what we
know; it is who we are.
Live the life. Explore. Discover. Dream. Do all you will to manipulate
the language with a sure hand and an open creative mind. And then, share
your vision by submitting to us your fiction, essay, poem. We await you.

ABRAMELIN, THE JOURNAL OF MAGICK AND POETRY
What we want…Essays on Magick and Thelema. By magick
I mean with a K – if you know what I mean. Poetry that
shows rather than tells. Poems that make me jealous of the
writer. Poems that are inspired with wonderful language and
imagery. In short – literature. Poetry submissions needn’t be
about magick at all. I feel that real poetry is magick. In fact,
poetry that is literally magickal in theme has to be twice as
good. Please note that I hate rhyming poems. Very short
fiction. But beware, I learned from the best.

Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Free Press, 2007
Reviewed by Laurel Fuller
Sometimes losing one’s faith is less about losing something
than about finding oneself. This is certainly the case for
Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s memoir, Infidel. It takes a great deal of
courage and inner strength to honestly examine the life and
culture you were brought up in, and Ali has done that. From
an excruciating scene of female circumcision from her early
childhood, to the tender, intimate moment of her first kiss, to
the chilling episode that follows the assassination of her
filmmaking partner, Theo van Gogh…

fickle head: her beloved grandfather dies, and her mother's
unpredictable manic moods leave her feeling disoriented and
betrayed. Seeking refuge on the anonymous streets of lower
Manhattan's west side. . .

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM OUR CO-MANAGING EDITOR
by Nannette Croce
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
If you visited our Roses & Thorns Blog in the last few weeks, you
noticed our new look. If you haven’t visited recently, then get on over
there. You’ve been missing a lot.
Thanks to Senior Editor, Cesar Garza, whom you may know as the fellow in
charge of our excellent poetry section, we have a new design. Cesar
co-manages the blog with me, and has kindly taken over all the design
features. I’m the queen of neutral, so, thankfully, Cesar gave the site
some pizzazz.
But the design is not the only thing that’s new. We post new book
reviews regularly, some of which are featured here in the newsletter,
and we, of course, continue to add posts by our staff that provide
everything from specific tips about writing for R&T to more general
articles on craft to observations on the writing life. We’ve also added
Resources for Writers, where we evaluate different sites and post
information about conferences and workshops.
The best new addition is our Featured Author Interviews. These
interviews have always been a favorite with readers of the zine, but
with our quarterly format, often interviews wouldn’t appear until long
after the author’s latest book had hit the shelves. Posting interviews
on the blog allows us to offer a larger number of more up-to-date
interviews. And with just one click, you’ll be able to read a review of
the author’s latest work.
Why not stop by right now, and then sign up for RSS feed, so you won’t
miss a single new post.
