FROM THE EDITOR'S PEN
by Kathryn Magendie
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,

Fall. A world on the verge of turning, and not just with color, but also
the very essence of color, the way the turning makes one feel without
even stepping outside. When I do venture out, the sharp smell of October
enters my nose and tickles the fine hairs, and down into my lungs I
breathe the season in. The nights and mornings turn cool, the afternoons
and evenings warm just enough for my dogs to heave sighs as they sun on
the porch. The Smoky Mountains are clear and sharp without summer’s
haze. Our ever-evolving world never stops moving and re-creating, yet we
look to the seasons as signs of that change, because the seasons more
acutely show nature’s metamorphic cycles.

This time of year can hold melancholy once the colors fade and the world
blends gray-brown-sepia, the summer toys are put away, the vacations
only remembered in photographs and letters home, the windows closed
against the chill. Yet, I anticipate the metamorphosis. I require it. It
is the same solid world in summer or fall, but with something new to
anticipate. Change comes about with a new energy, a forward thrust, an
excitement for what comes next.

And there is much to look forward to this fall! A new issue of Rose &
Thorn will soon arrive, new newsletters, new blog entries. Each issue of
The Rose & Thorn, with its wealth of talented writers and poets who
anticipate their stories, essays, and poetry opening up before the
reader’s eye with the smart left click of a mouse; each newsletter sent
right to your email doorstep (and if you received this newsletter from
someone else, then why not sign up now by clicking here:
http://www.theroseandthornezine.com/SignUp.html; it’s easy, and your
email address is confidential and safe); each well-placed and
well-thought out blog entry, interview, and book review the staff
provides on Roses & Thorns — all from the familiar, yet a fresh, crisp
new world awaits each cycle.

The summer hiatus for fiction and nonfiction has passed; if you have not
already submitted, then it’s time to polish up your work and submit to
us. Send us your colors, your new cool wind, your anticipation of a
world blanketed in silence, or one shouting out in abundant noise and
confusion and wonder. Send us your best, and as always, we will give to
you our best.

BOOKS FOR BOYS

School is starting and again this year there will be many boys who don't
enjoy reading. I understand those boys because I was one of them. I
hated to read as a child. Now I write action-adventures and mysteries
especially for boys 8 - 13.

My blog, Books for Boys at http://booksandboys.blogspot.com is in the
top 5 on Yahoo and the top 20 on Google. You'll find links there to my
web site and to 50 pages of reviews for my books.

NEWSPAPER CAPER, NORTH WOODS POACHERS,
MOUNTAIN CABIN MYSTERY, BIG RIG RUSTLERS,
SECRET OF ABBOTT'S CAVE & LEGEND OF THE WHITE
WOLF, are compared by readers and reviewers to Tom
Sawyer, The Hardy Boys, Huck Finn, Nancy Drew, Tom
Swift, Scooby-Doo, Lemony Snicket, and adventure author
Jack London.

This year, you can change the lives of boys by introducing them to my
books. They are ranked by Accelerated Reader and are already making a
huge difference with boys. The good news is that girls like them too.

ON THE (CONTINUING) ROAD BY WIL HOUGH

Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Jack Kerouac's classic

Before Woodstock, before the Summer of Love, before the Beatles or even
Elvis freed us to move to the beat, indeed, before rock and roll emerged
from the social bus of Negro Bop and Rockabilly, there was Jack Kerouac
embracing the beat of the open road. Though it might seem Jack Kerouac
came into a different world than we know today, there are many parallels
to the dynamics that created him...

THE BIRD HOVERER BY AARON BELTZ

Poetry

BlazeVOX Books, 2007

Reviewed by KRISTINA MARIE DARLING

In Aaron Belz’s The Bird Hoverer, traditional poetic forms meet
celebrities, strangeness, and Meryl Streep, setting the stage for a
hilarious, fiercely intelligent collection of poems. Filled with wild
metaphors and imaginative premises, this book turns tradition on its
head while parodying Walt Whitman, Ben Affleck, and just about everyone
else who crosses this inventive poet’s path

THE READER'S MAIL BAG

Your feedback is welcome! Letters to the editor should be sent by

----------------------------------------
Dear Rose & Thorn:

For god's sakes, will somebody please tell me — what it is in Editors'
minds that makes them so damned hard to deal with! I'm not talking about
the day to day rejections I get, I'm talking about the ones who tell you
they want something & then return the offering posthaste when they've
gotten exactly what they asked for! I have at hand a rejection slip from
the editor of a well-known magazine in New England who returned my poems
the same day — here's the kicker: he took the time to send me a note
asking for the very qualities in the poems I'd just sent him! I swear to
god, everything he wanted was right there! I don't think he read them.
Trying to get through the slush pile is difficult enough, but this is
ridiculous!

Another magazine who asks for blank verse returned my poems in this
genre & accepted a free-verse item.

Can anybody explain this?

                       Jack Peachum
                       Mint-@Meckcom.net

Hi Jack,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write to us.

I know how frustrating the submissions process can be and I've
experienced a lot of what you mention in your email.

Frankly, I'm not at all sure what goes on in editor's minds when I get
some rejections. I tend to think of the submissions and acceptance
process as a type of Rashomon where everyone has their own version of
what they understood was being requested and what they sent. And of
course, we're all dealing with individual editors, who have their own
personal and subjective approach; an approach that may be different on
different days depending on the times and market.

As for the entire submission process, I try to keep this quote from
Winston Churchill in mind. "If you are going through hell, keep going."

Good luck and keep writing and submitting.

Sincerely,

Barbara Quinn
