FROM THE EDITOR'S PEN
by Kathryn Magendie
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
“Only in books can you be married to them all.” –James Salter
A friend tells me how she and other women in my community have decided
my husband is a saint. I stare at her with one eyebrow metaphorically
cocked (oh, that I could actually cock an eyebrow, for one doesn’t have
to speak one word when an eyebrow is cocked), and I say, “What do y’all
mean by that?”
“He puts up with your craziness and cooks you dinner.” She sniffs. “And,
he does his own laundry. You can sit there and write all the live-long
day and never have to worry about your husband yelling for his dinner
and a clean pair of underdrawers.”
I’ve heard this before. How I have The Perfect Husband. It doesn’t stop
me from rolling my eyes and quipping back, “Well, you live with him and
then see if you still think he’s perfect.” Even as I say that, I feel a
bit smug. I know I am fortunate. It’s true; Roger cooks, he does his own
laundry, and he is self-sufficient in a way some spouses or partners are
not. When left to my own devices, I can live off canned tuna, canned
soup, and the strange salads I make out of whatever I can plop upon a
pile of pre-washed lettuce. My momma would shake her head, for she
taught me to cook good southern food. Well, I can cook; I choose not to.
Truth is: I become dazed and restless and remote and strange, and
therefore food at times becomes only something to sustain me so I will
not shrivel up and die. And, I am ashamed to say, I sometimes treat my
husband the way I treat food: I can relate conversation; I choose not
to. I become dazed and restless and remote and strange, and therefore
Roger at times becomes someone to sustain me so I will not go unloved.
And, my husband has competition for my affections. All of you.
I go to sleep with a crowd in my head. I wake up with a crowd in my
head. The crowd consists of the audience I hope to reach with my words,
the writers I hope to help with my edits—the whole wide world of You and
You and You who remain in my peripheral mind’s eye day after day, moment
after moment, word after word. Hope after hope.
I can ignore the real world around me for long enough to almost lose who
is important to me—my family, my friends, my town. Yet, even as I write
that, I know how I need all of You to be important to me. But even more,
I want Me to be important to You.
We need each other, don’t we? We are important to each other, aren’t we?
We can’t live without each other, can we? Tell me you love Me and I will
show you I love You. It is a marriage woven together with words and
promises of more words. We stand before the alter of Language and
Literature and we brace ourselves against the years, and we give and
give and take and take, and give and take. A love that never dies, even
in the lean and hard and mean years. Not even until death do us part—for
written words never die.
The holiday is around the corner—it sneaks up and then begins stomping
around to show it will not be ignored. How about giving the gift of You
to Us? Send us your best stories, essays, poetry. It’s a gift for both
our readers and for you.
P.S. Before you feel too sorry for him, I just spent hours baking my
husband his favorite pumpkin-nut-spice bread, and stirring up the fudge
and peanut butter bon bons he loves. There. Done for the year. Happy
Holiday!

FROM THE PUBLISHER’S PEN
by Barbara Quinn
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
All of us at The Rose & Thorn wish all of you the best of the holiday
season. I’m deep in Christmas activities and enjoying being able to
celebrate with my family. For those of you who have suffered a loss of a
loved one, I hope you find some peace, and can enjoy the good memories
you made. Please know that all of us look forward to being in your
company in 2008.
2008. Wow. That means we’ve been going strong for ten years.
We are the little zine that could and does get the job done. I want
to say thanks to the dedicated volunteer staffers and also thanks
to all you readers, and writers who submit your works. Most of all, I
offer the deepest gratitude to those of you who donate to us,
and take out ads in our newsletter. We run the zine completely from your
donations and ads. Those funds allow us to cover our expenses and to pay
a small fee to everyone we publish. Yes, we’ve come a long way in ten
years.
What’s new at the zine? We now have a myspace page.
http://www.myspace.com/roseandthornlitzine Stop by and “friend” us if
you’re over there. Rebecca Oliver designed the page and set it up.
Thanks, Rebecca!
The Roses & Thorns blog is going strong.
http://roseandthornreviews.blogspot.com/
Besides posts from blogging staffers, we now feature guest
blogging authors. Nannette and Cesar have worked hard to make the blog
welcoming and accessible. Maggie, Deborah, Samella, Jenn, and Cathy
round out the blog staff, and there’s a group of staffers who take turns
posting to the blog.
We’ll have a new issue of the zine out in January. The prose and poetry
staffers are working their magic and will once again present you with
fine fiction, nonfiction, poetry and essays with lovely illustrations
selected by Wil and Angie, and not-to-be-missed cover notes by Liam.
Dallas will be sending the Announcement Newsletter about that.
Don’t forget, if you have a new book release, we’re happy to give you
one free notice in this newsletter. Just send a note to me or to our
Newsletter Editor, the hard working and talented Kat Magendie. And if
you’d like us to consider reviewing your work, let me or Co-Managing
Editor, Nannette Croce know, and we’ll add you to Nannette’s list. Our
review staff is growing and is happy to try to accommodate you.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, and Happy New Year!

GREAT PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITY FOR GREAT ESSAYS—

The bestselling A Cup of Comfort book series is now seeking submissions
for five new anthologies. Stories may be humorous, insightful,
inspiring, or poignant, but whatever the tone or the topic, they must be
authentic and positive.
All Cup of Comfort stories must be true, original, positive, narrative
essays (creation nonfiction), and 1,000-2,000 words. Entrants pay no
fees. Writer's guidelines: http://www.cupofcomfort.com/share.htm
----------------------------------------
A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors <<with Redbook Magazine>>
It has been said that “stories are medicine” and that “one of the most
valuable things we can do to heal one another is to share our stories.”
This collection will include inspiring and uplifting personal essays
about the experiences and emotions of living with—and living
after—breast cancer. Possible story themes include but are not limited
to: diagnosis, treatment, emotional impact, support systems, healthy
lifestyle practices, emotional healing, coping mechanisms, impact on
loved ones, effect on friendships, effect on career/work, effect on
romance/intimacy, life lessons learned, personal transformation, silver
linings, gratitude, triumph over trials, body image, and more. All
themes and writing styles considered, as long as the story is positive.
Submission deadline: December 31, 2007 <<sooner is better>>
**Exclusively for the Breast Cancer Survivor volume, the Cup of Comfort
publisher, Adams Media, is working in partnership with Redbook Magazine
and will award a $5,000 grand prize, $5,000 donation to the Susan G.
Fomen Breast Cancer Foundation in the grand prize winner’s name, and a
bonus prize to each of three runner-up stories. An announcement about
the Redbook/Cup of Comfort contest appears in the October 2007 issue of
Redbook.**
----------------------------------------
A Cup of Comfort for Military Families
It has been said that military life is “not for the faint of heart.” But
neither is it without its benefits and blessings. One thing is certain:
it is an experience like no other—for both the soldiers and their
families. For this book, we want positive stories about how military
life affects the personal lives of service men and women (enlisted and
officers), how family affects soldiers on the job, and how military life
affects family members (primarily spouses, children, and parents but
also siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts/uncles, fiancées,
etc.). Any situation or subject that is significant and/or unique to
military personnel and their loved ones is acceptable. Our goal is to
compile a collection of inspiring or uplifting stories that cover a wide
range of topics and reveal a variety of perspectives, experiences, and
emotions specific to military families. Stories may be written by the
service man or woman or a close family member; military service may be
current, recent, or past.
Submission deadline: March 1, 2008
$500 grand prize; $100 each, all other published stories; plus copy of
book.
----------------------------------------
A Cup of Comfort for New Mothers
Few experiences bring forth as many anxieties, blessings, challenges,
wonders, and changes as having a baby—whether it’s your first child or
fifth, your birth child or adopted child. And nothing is as miraculous
as giving birth to or witnessing the birth of your baby. This
heartwarming anthology will be filled with birth stories and newborn
homecoming stories as well as a wide range of stories about the various
experiences, emotions, and concerns involved in adding a new baby to
one’s life and family. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
nursing (or not), caring for a newborn, bonding/falling in love with
infant, lack of sleep, relationship with spouse, how siblings respond,
returning to work, balancing responsibilities, post-partum depression,
self transformation, unexpected joys, life lessons, small miracles, etc.
The majority of the stories will be about birth children, but the book
will likely include a couple adoptive stories as well. Likewise, most of
the stories will be written from the new mother’s perspective, but we
are open to including a few stories written from the spouse’s or a very
close family member’s perspective. All stories will be uplifting and
positive, no matter how difficult the situation portrayed in the story
might be. We do not want stories that simply recount misfortunes and
sorrows and that do not clearly reveal a positive outcome or redeeming
result (silver lining).
Submission deadline: April 1, 2008
$500 grand prize; $100 each, all other published stories; plus copy of
book.
----------------------------------------
A Cup of Comfort for Adoptive Families
The primary purpose of this book is to celebrate adoptive families and
to recognize the extraordinary and challenging experiences that are
unique to “chosen children” and their families. We are most interested
in stories written by adult adoptive children and their adoptive parents
and siblings, but the book will also likely include some stories written
by members of the extended adoptive family (grandparent, aunt/uncle,
cousin), close friends of the adoptive family (i.e. godparent), and
birth family members. Virtually any topic relevant to adopted children
and their adoptive parents is acceptable—as long as it is authentic,
positive, insightful, and uplifting or inspiring. We do not want
heartbreaking stories about adoptive parents or birth families that
regret the adoption; there is a place for stories of that ilk, but this
book is not that place. All of the stories in this collection must show
a positive aspect of adoption and must bring comfort or joy or
inspiration to those who have been adopted and/or to the families who
adopted them—no matter how difficult the experience and emotions
portrayed in the story might be.
Submission deadline: June 15, 2008
$500 grand prize; $100 each, all other published stories; plus copy of
book.

HAPPY TALES LITERARY CONTEST
Have you ever read a great work of literature and been disappointed by
an ending that might have been more…shall we say…uplifting,
affirmative…happy?
Do you harbor suspicions…that the Capulets and the Montagues might have
worked things out, that Romeo and Juliet could have gotten into a longer
term relationship? That, if Rochester had hired a sharp lawyer and
annulled his first marriage (he was tricked, right?), he and Jane might
have gotten together much sooner and avoided all that unpleasantness
about the fire? That Sydney Carton might actually have gone on to far,
far better things?
Face it: even the greatest of authors and their works might have
benefited from a more positive outlook. Now you can help to right
things, by entering the “Happy Tales” literary contest…
Contest rules: take any literary work with a sad, disturbing, or
negative ending and supply a happy, affirmative, uplifting, humorous
ending. The new ending must more or less parody the idiom, style,
atmosphere, and so on, of the original. Entries will be judged on the
bases of humor, insight, and quality of parody. Entries should be no
more than ten pages in length and may be submitted on paper or via
email. Entry (postmark) deadline: August 31, 2008. Decisions of the
contest judges are final.
Award: $200 cash money and the prestigious, coveted, etc., Nahum Tate
Cup. Entries, including the winning entry, may be read and praised
and/or ridiculed by contest judges in a public session of the Humanities
Montana Festival of the Book, October 2-4, 2008, Missoula, MT. Winning
entries will be weblished at the Festival website or published in other
media. Entries become the non-exclusive property of the Montana Festival
of the Book.
Send entries to Happy Tales, Humanities Montana Festival of the Book,
311 Brantly, Missoula, MT 59812-7848, or to
in-@humanitiesmontana.org.

Or maybe you've self-published an e-book to add a little padding to your

I am currently assessing interest in an e-course or ebook that will help

Before I commit to the project, I want to know if the

If you are a writer, I'd like to hear from you.

submitted to us in the past, followed all the guidelines, but received a
rejection anyway. Or maybe you're considering a submission but don't
know which of your pieces would be right for us.
You should check out Roses & Thorns where R&T's prose and poetry editors
provide writing tips, observations, and an inside look at what does and
does not make the cut. You'll also find recommended resources for
writers, book reviews and interviews with well-known authors.
Even better, you can comment and ask questions about posts. Editors will
check back regularly and reply.
