FROM THE PUBLISHER’S PEN
By Barbara Quinn
Greetings,
It's my favorite time of year here in the Northeastern US. The beaches
are looking great, the air is filled with warmth, and my toes are back
in my sandals and the sand. Ahhh, summer.
Enjoy our latest issue of the zine which is packed with terrific stories
and poems. Don't miss the two pieces by Senior Editor Kat Magendie:
Three Abundance, and Golden Sparking Dancer's Cap. We're always
particularly happy to be able to feature works by the talented staffers
here at the zine.
Just in time for summer I want to tell you about Sniplits.com, a new
site for audio short stories that are perfect for listening to on the
beach, or on a run or walk. Sniplits bought audio rights to a number of
my stories, produced them, and is now offering them for sale, which is
thrilling. Some of them appeared in The Rose & Thorn. I love the New
England flair they gave to my Clambake story. They also have produced a
number of stories from people published by or associated with The Rose &
Thorn. Check out pieces by Robert Freidman, Rebecca Oliver, and Wayne
Scheer. Sniplits is a great spot to know about if you are looking for
short story markets.
I have other good news to share. I now have an agent
for my latest novel. Please keep me in your positive thoughts. Writing
novels is a tremendously long and arduous journey and I'm so glad to
have you all along for the trek. Keep writing and don't let anyone
dissuade you from your dreams.
Finally, I wanted to mention that we have a terrific team of “pod
people” working on bringing podcasts of The Rose & Thorn’s content to
you. Adnan has been working like made to bring us into the podcasting
age. He’s been joined by Cesar, Yu-han, Kat, Nannette, and Wil. Stay
tuned!
And if you have any free time and would like to bring us into the
Twitter age, or Facebook, we would love to hear from you.
Barb
PS Don’t forget that we're closed to prose submissions till September.
We're taking a much needed reading break till then.

NOTES ABOUT OUR COVER
by Liam Wilkinson
MIDSUMMER EVE by Edward Hughes
“I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful - a faery's child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.”
- John Keats, ‘La Belle Dame sans Merci’
Throughout the nineteenth century, artists and poets
alike were enchanted, and so often inspired, by
ancient folktales. The fairy world, particularly in
the British Isles, has inspired some of the world’s
greatest visual art and literature, making its mark on
the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Keats and Yeats and on the paintings
of Millais, Rossetti, Atkinson
Grimshaw and Edward Hughes.
Though we know the moon is beaming down on the scene, the light in
Edward Hughes’s ‘Midsummer Evening’ radiates from the world of the
little people as they surround the female figure with their lanterns.
It’s
the same light that illuminated Shakespeare’s ‘A
Midsummer Night’s Dream’, and, indeed, Hermia is
brought to life once more in this captivating example
of Pre-Raphaelite charm.
Liam

LOOKING BEHIND THE GUIDELINES
Would you like to know what R&T is really looking for? Maybe you've
submitted to us in the past, followed all the guidelines, but received a
rejection anyway. Or maybe you're considering a submission but don't
know which of your pieces would be right for us.
You should check out Roses & Thorns where R&T's prose and poetry editors
provide writing tips, observations, and an inside look at what does and
does not make the cut. You'll also find recommended resources for
writers, book reviews, and interviews with well-known authors.
Even better, you can comment and ask questions about posts. Editors will
check back regularly and reply.
