Kathryn Magendie
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,

I am here to shamelessly brag that most of our summer has been warm and
breezy, with low humidity and a few nice cooling rains to ease our
drought conditions. For those of you sweltering, I send you my
condolences and a cyber glass of Southern Sweet Tea with fat blocks of
ice floating, the outside of the glass sweating, the cool sweet of the
dark tea slipping down your throat, into your stomach, and then through
your veins——ahhh!

During the summer, Rose & Thorn took a break from reading prose
submissions, but we were not idle! Please check out our “Special
Announcements” below for details on all the exciting happenings at The
Rose & Thorn. As well, Angie Ledbetter and I are now Co-Managing
Editor’s of The Rose & Thorn; I feel a dual emotion about this: humble
pride (is that possible? Yes!) and sadness that this new journey with
R&T means that Nannette Croce has left us.

The Rose & Thorn is a living breathing e-zine, both changing and
growing, but staying consistent to our mission to provide readers with
quality prose and poetry, and to provide writers a quality place to
showcase their work. We hope you will stop by and take a look at all the
offerings. Our staff works hard and our reward is an e-zine we can be
proud of, and we all are quite proud of The Rose & Thorn.

The poets and prose writers who are published in The Rose & Thorn love
their words and works read and enjoyed, so peruse the summer issue, and
the issues to follow, and send a note to let the writers know you
enjoyed their work. As well, write to us here at R&T; we love to hear
from you.

September 9 we reopen to prose submissions, so polish your work and send
us your very best. It takes guts to put yourself out there and submit,
and for those of you who do and have not yet been published, never give
up.

Enjoy the rest of summer, everyone. See you again soon.

FROM THE PUBLISHER’S PEN-
Barbara Quinn
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,

We’re busy this summer here at the zine. Our podcast team is putting the
final touches on the podcasting feature that we’re planning to offer
everyone who publishes here. This is an exciting development. The
podcasts are available via iTunes as well as via a link from the blog.
Adnan, Yu-Han, and Cesar have been intensely focused on making this work
and making it look gorgeous too. Adnan’s been contacting our past
Pushcart nominees for poetry and fiction to be part of the first
podcasting effort. Authors are reading their own works, and staffers
here at the zine have also been doing some of the readings. More info is
below.

We’re on Twitter now! This is a fine way for us to promote the zine and
spotlight a different story or poem or let our readers know when
submissions open. We can make announcements instantaneously via Twitter.
If you’d like to receive our Tweets do follow the link below. A big
thank you goes out to Kat for setting it up and for Tweeting our
followers.

Angie Ledbetter and Kat Magendie have taken on the task of being my
Co-Managing Editors here. They stepped into the well-worn shoes of
Nannette who, sadly, left to pursue her own writing. Luckily, Angie and
Kat know the place upside down and inside out. They are an asset to you
readers and to the rest of the staff.

Angie will oversee the nonfiction and awards and continue helping out
picking graphics. Kat will continue with the newsletter and will oversee
areas such as book reviews and interviews. We keep growing and adding
new features, and it’s a joy to be able to work with all the staffers
here. People like Kat and Angie make it all possible because without
their administrative oversight, things do tend to get lost in the
tremendous number of emails we have to digest each day.

Thankfully, Cesar, Deb, Yu-Han, and Adnan are now running the Roses &
Thorns blog. They’ll be featuring guest bloggers, staffer posts, book
reviews, and interviews. I’ve learned a lot from their organizational
skills. You should see Deb’s color-coded assignment sheet! And Cesar’s a
pro at drafting up our procedures, which Dallas then faithfully keeps
track of. We now have an Awards and Nominations team headed up by
Suzanne LaFetra. Besides nominating for the Pushcart each year, we are
nominating for more and more anthologies.

Our Book Review department is headed by Elaine Kelson. She and the
reviewers will be posting reviews to the Roses & Thorns blog.

Sheri Whitlock is handling our MySpace page where she plans to feature
works by writers 12- to 16-years-old and some reviews of YA too.

Wil is still digging for graphics, and also continues giving out
excellent advice over in the Message Board garden.

Our prose and poetry staffers are the backbone of the zine and they’re
working on the next issue, which should be out in October.

Why not sign up for Twitter and get tweeted about when our next issue
goes live?

Summer's End Thoughts

Being promoted to Rose & Thorn's Co-Managing Editor, I hope to do a good
job for a literary organization I already love. R&T's success boils down
to two things in my opinion -- a great and caring staff, and you, our
loyal readership. So, thank you for reading, commenting, supporting and
caring!

I hope as your summer dwindles away into a cooler autumn, you're finding
pursuits to feed your soul and relaxation to rest your body. I've spent
a busy ten weeks full of old and new endeavors, but have nicely wedged
in good, productive reading and writing time. And for my soul, I've
begun a romance (fatal attraction?) with a new form of poetry writing.
Although it doesn't go by just one name, it is fun and great therapy for
those who like to create. Visual poetry, concrete poetry, manipulated or
treated text, whatever it's called; it's a great way to express yourself
with both word and color. Anyone interested in poetry, I urge you to
surf the Net and see what it's all about.

Thanks again for loving the Rose & Thorn as much as we do, and enjoy our
current issue with its written treasures we've selected with YOU in
mind. (And drop me a line if you find you've suddenly become addicted to
Visual Poetry!)

POEMS NIEDERNGASSE

Poems Niederngasse is based in Zürich, Switzerland, and originated as a
small English language print magazine in 1996. In August 1998 PNG began
its online presence with no other purpose than to give one more
opportunity for poets to be heard.

Well crafted poems of all types, freed from tired images. Also
interested in short (under ten line) pieces, as well as haiku
variation...and poems about paintings with the accompany photo so we can
all see what you are raving about.

Send three to five poems in the body of the email. (All poems in one
email, please), and (a personal nit here) please send more then one poem
as a submission. Send submissions and questions to:
submi-@niederngasse.com

Response time approximately four weeks.

An author whose work is accepted grants Poems Niederngasse one time
electronic publication rights, and the option of one time printing
rights of the accepted work in a hard copy edition. At this time, there
is no payment for work appearing online only.

----------------------------------------
INDIANA REVIEW: SUBMISSIONS REOPEN SEPTEMBER

Indiana Review is published semiannually in May and November. Our
reporting time is usually 2 - 4 months, but may at times be longer. IR
accepts less than 1% of manuscripts submitted. Payment for publication
is $5.00 per page ($10.00 minimum), two contributor's copies, and the
remainder of a year's subscription. Rights revert to author upon
publication.

Needs: IR publishes 6-10 stories, 40-60 pages of poetry, 1-2 nonfiction
pieces, and 6-12 book reviews per issue, as well as art inserts when
funding allows. All work must be previously unpublished. We look for
poems, stories, and nonfiction that are well-crafted and lively, have an
intelligent sense of form and language, assume a degree of risk, and
have consequence beyond the world of their speakers or narrators. We
also welcome interviews with established writers.

For detailed guidelines, go to:

For My Dog is My Hero, we are seeking fifty 850-1100-word stories
featuring a remarkable dog in your life. Yes, about dogs and only dogs,
not cats, or other pets. Adams Media pays $100 per story (one per
volume), plus a copy of the book, and Literary Cottage will also award
three prizes $100, $75, and $50 for the top three stories respectively.
Please review the spelled out guidelines and sample stories on the "Hero

DEADLINE: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2008.

THE VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW: SUBMISSIONS
REOPEN SEPTEMBER 2

VQR strives to publish the freshest, most accomplished writers of our
time. We are partial to work that is conscious of language without being
self-conscious, that pulls readers in with drama and emotional risk,
rather than holding them at arm's length with gimmickry and tricks. In
short, we seek writing that uses intensely focused language to affect
the way that readers see the world. A well-crafted poem, story, or essay
is, at its heart, a statement of refusal to accept conventional wisdom
and instead study the world for oneself. We seek that writing which
illuminates what we, as a culture, may learn from such close inspection.

General Guidelines: We only consider unpublished work. Please do not
submit previously published material, including work published in
anthologies, chapbooks, or online. We only accept submissions via our
website using our online form. We're sorry, but due to the volume of
submissions we receive, we no longer accept unsolicited submissions via
mail and we do not accept submissions via email.

Payment & Copyright: For poetry, we pay $5/line, with a minimum payment
of $200 for all work published in an issue. For prose, we pay $100 per
typeset page (approximately 20¢/word). Work that is published only on
our website is paid at a lower rate.

For detailed guidelines, go to:
http://www.vqronline.org/submission/guidelines/

----------------------------------------
ELECTRIC DRAGON CAFÉ WRITING CONTEST

Every quarter the Electric Dragon Cafe holds a writing contest. We
provide a topic, photo or theme for your story. We do not insist that
writers include the elements in any prominent way, but we appreciate
ingenuity. We will judge each entry based on adherence to the topic,
originality, and sheer entertainment value. The winning story will be
published on our site, and the author will receive a twenty-five dollar
gift certificate to Borders or Barnes and Noble because we believe that
if an author does not want to spend prize money on books, then he, she,
or it has no business writing. We may also publish any number of other
entries that exemplify the spirit of the contest. Please read the
official rules before you submit your work.

HURRY: Entries must be received by 11:59 PM EST August 31, 2008.

The winner will receive a $25 dollar gift certificate to either Borders
or Barnes and Noble. Second place will receive a $10 certificate, and
third place will receive an Electric Dragon Cafe writing journal from
our online shoppe, not because we're cheap, but because we have very
little capital.

Current topic: In honor of our new hatchling, the theme for this quarter
will be birth and rebirth. We want stories of new life and new
beginnings, humble origins with grand futures bright or dark, tales of
growth and change. This is a broad topic, so we expect variety. Good
luck. For more information, go to: http://tinyurl.com/5htc7k
----------------------------------------
ESSAY CONTEST: FUNDSFORWRITERS

7th Annual FundsforWriters Essay Contest

FundsforWriters changes its theme each year. You have two topics to
choose from in 2008, but they have one thing in common. Your assignment,
if you choose to accept it, is to write about the best advice you ever
heard.

THEME: The Best Advice I Ever Had

TOPIC 1 - The Best Advice I ever had and IGNORED

TOPIC 2 - The Best Advice I ever had and FOLLOWED

Ahhh - something different, huh? If you know anything about
FundsforWriters, you know that we like lessons learned and motivational
ideas. Of course, we are all about writers, so if you stray off the
beaten path and talk about something non-writing-related, be careful.
Hopefully it will tie back into a writing lesson. Just think about
Hope's weekly editorials when she takes ravaging deer, grandchildren or
the price of gas and turns it into a writing essay.

We offer the same two categories - the $5 FEE category and the NO FEE
category. Many writers do not believe in paying while others have no
contrary opinion about an entry fee. Here we offer both so everyone has
a choice. This way no one has an excuse not to submit. If you cannot
submit to this contest, you just don't like to write essays - period. We
put you on no mailing list and you do not have to be a member of
FundsforWriters to enter. For guidelines and more information, go to:
http://www.fundsforwriters.com/annualcontest.htm

BOOMER BABES: TRUE TALES OF LOVE AND LUST
IN THE LATER YEARS BY MARIE GRAZIA SWAN

Dorchester Publishing Co, Inc.
Reviewed by Deborah Laws

Let’s face it: Boomers rule America. By definition, Boomers are the
seventy-six million Americans (comprising nearly twenty-eight percent of
the adult population in the United States) between forty-four and
sixty-two years of age; they are the generation of babies born between
1946 (when birth rates began to spike post–World War II) and 1964 (when
birth control pills became widely used). Some argue that real Boomers
are those who were born by 1955—meaning they were a part of the
’sixties, in their late teens during the Vietnam War and thus subject to
the draft, and thirty-somethings during the thirtysomething era, and are
now parents (mostly of adult children) and grandparents…

THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE

Published by Bantam Dell Books
Reviewed by Andrea Middendorf

It is 1946. London and the rest of the world are beginning the slow
recovery after the last guns of World War II have echoed on the
battlefield. Juliet Ashton, Londoner, author, and survivor, is tossing
about for a topic for her next book when she receives what seems like a
chance letter from Dawsey Adams, native of Guernsey. Guernsey, one of
the Channel Islands, was the only part of the British Commonwealth to be
occupied by Germany during the war. Told through a series of letters and
telegrams, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society tells a
striking story of life, hardship, and perseverance under adversity…

FALLING UNDER BY DANIELLE YOUNGE-ULLMAN

Plume, August 2008
Reviewed by Kathryn Magendie

How pleasantly surprised I was to find the synopsis blurb on the back
cover only scratched the surface of the intensity and beauty of
Younge-Ullman’s debut novel Falling Under. The story, and the writing,
builds to a fevered pitch of power and depth, as if the writer herself
became swept away by her character and finally let loose the emotions so
carefully contained . . . as though Younge-Ullman herself is the artist,
and brushstroke by brushstroke, the pattern and color and depth are
illuminated until the final painting is at last revealed, complete with
surprises. This is solid contemporary women’s fiction, and once
Younge-Ullman relaxes into her story, the literary quality of her
writing shines through…

FIRST DRAFT IN 30 DAYS BY KAREN S. WIESER

Writer's Digest Books

For some writers, ‘outlining’ is a nasty, four-letter word. So, when an
author claims their outlining method will produce your novel’s first
draft in a mere thirty days (no matter the genre), that’s a bold
statement indeed. However, in her book, First Draft in 30 Days, Karen S.
Wiesner does exactly that and, for the most part, she comes through on
her promise…

VISUAL POETRY

Angie Ledbetter has been in the throes of a new obsession/possession

possibility of a 2009 showing in the works. She is learning to live with

Kathryn Magendie’s photograph “Water Rocks” is published in Ocean
