FROM THE PUBLISHER’S PEN
By Barbara Quinn
Dear Readers,
Another October means another Fall Issue for
your enjoyment. Please join me in
thanking the staff who have worked hard
to bring you the latest offerings of The Rose
& Thorn. And I also want to thank YOU for submitting
to us and for reading the zine. You’re
the reason we keep going.
We have some really fine prose and poetry
this issue. Plus, don’t miss the two interviews:
Author Danielle Younge – Ullman, and Anne Stuessy
of Sniplits.
Our podcasting effort is alive and kicking.
Now, when we publish a story or poem, the
author has the option to make a podcast
of the piece. It’s a lot of fun to be able
to feature the works this way. And the podcasts are
not only available for our new issue authors. If you’ve pubbed with us
any time in the past, and are interested in making a podcast of your
work, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with our “pod people”.
I want to urge everyone in the US to vote in this groundbreaking
election. There will either be the first African-American president, or
the first woman vice-president, in the White House by the time this
fervent Obama supporter writes to you again in December. Let’s hope that
by then the economy has started a slow climb back!
Keep writing,
Barbara

NOTES ABOUT OUR COVER
by Liam Wilkinson
Young Woman Reading by a Window
by Delphin Enjolras
Is there anything more tranquil than this: sitting with a book on your
lap, daylight falling onto the open page, the smell of fresh flowers in
the air?
This is, perhaps, Delphin Enjolras’s most celebrated painting. And it is
typical of this French artist’s peaceful portraits in which his female
figures are engaged in the ordinary activities of everyday life.
Enjolras’s paintings are bathed in an almost liquid light, whether it be
the light of day or of a simple bedside lamp, and this painting, with
its rich colours suffused with golden light, is no exception.
Like great writing, it is the simple, mundane aspects of life that the
painter succeeds in illuminating, often exposing the extraordinary in
something quite ordinary. What may be deemed inconsequential to most can
be a vast complex of detail and sheer surprise to the artist; and,
indeed, to the writer. Enjolras was a master of this, and it’s for this
reason that his paintings have resonated over the last century.

LOOKING BEHIND THE GUIDELINES
Would you like to know what R&T is really looking for? Maybe you've
submitted to us in the past, followed all the guidelines, but received a
rejection anyway. Or maybe you're considering a submission but don't
know which of your pieces would be right for us.
You should check out Roses & Thorns where R&T's prose and poetry editors
provide writing tips, observations, and an inside look at what does and
does not make the cut. You'll also find recommended resources for
writers, book reviews, and interviews with well-known authors.
Even better, you can comment and ask questions about posts. Editors will
check back regularly and reply.
