FROM THE NEWSLETTER EDITOR'S PEN
Kathryn Magendie
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
On my mountain walk at Killian Knob this morning, I was happy to see the
signs of spring here, there, and yonder. Every early spring, I become
restless: tired of the chill; ready for the warmth, green, and flowers.
Birds whose calls I’ve missed these winter months were singing me awake
this morning.
What did you all do this winter? Did you read good books? Write? Or
maybe you were more active and flung yourself head-long into
cold-winter-activities? What I did was spend most of the month of
January, February, and March working over-time to ready Tender Graces
for its release this month. I’m learning much about the processes of
publishing. Some of it is as I expected, but there are the unexpected
things—such is as life! This journey from finding a publisher to having
the book ready to go to print is an enlightening one.
Although our prose submissions are closed, our poetry submissions are
open; I hope you will polish up your best poetry and submit to us. Take
some time to peruse the winter issue of The Rose & Thorn before it
leaves to make way for our spring issue---our writers and poets
appreciate your support and their contact information is available
should you wish to let them know you’ve enjoyed their work.
As always, feel free to email me with any questions or comments you may
have. Enjoy the coming spring and I’ll see you next in June.

Angie Ledbetter
----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
Because it is spring, I will keep my words brief in hopes that you are
finding the ways and means to be outside where light green rules the day
and buds are puffing out everywhere. Each year as winter slinks away I
remember 70s comedian Henry Gibson's recitation of an old seasonal poem
and smile --
Spring has sprung
The grass is riz
I wonder where
all the flowers is
Take a blanket and a favorite book or journal out into the sunshine and
enjoy the day.

The former home domain for our Community Forum has been sold and
replaced. The new URL is http://forum.bigperspective.com.
Join Wil, our own social heretic coyote, as he pokes and prods under a

REVEALING MOMENTS
“In these tales of hope and despair, childhood and old age, a woman
decides her mother’s fate, two strippers discuss plans for the future,
and a young boy watches his father die from the top of a tree.
Filled with humor and cynicism, Revealing Moments offers a fascinating
glimpse into the mind of an accomplished “miniaturist. “ Wayne Scheer’s
stories are both tender and heartbreaking, and their subject is the
range of human experience.”

EXPERIMENTS AT 3 BILLION A.M.
Alexander Zelenyj’s Experiments At 3 Billion A.M. is a collection of 40
haunting and surreal stories ranging widely in style, stretching from
lyrical flights of fantasy to gritty and painful realism to unsettling
horror and the grotesque – from subtle slipstream with only the faintest
sense of the otherworldly to vivid space fiction and even light-hearted
homage to the colourful and gleeful world of the pulps.
Always unexpected, these stories remain bound together by a tone of
universal sadness and gentleness, and an ever-increasing sense of
wonder. Published by Eibonvale Press, the 664-page collection will be
issued in Regular Edition Hardcover, Special Edition Hardcover, and
Trade Paperback with different cover artworks for each edition, as well
as 40 black-and-white interior illustrations by artist David Rix. For
more information visit www.alexanderzelenyj.com and

THE DREAM IN THE NEXT BODY
by Gabeba Baderoon
Winner of the DaimlerChrysler Award for South African Poetry 2005
Snailpress, 2005
Reviewed by Yu-Han Chao
Baderoon writes about immigration, art, and daily life with grace and
precision in her book of poems, The Dream in the Next Body. These poems
reflect moments from her physical and psychological journeys from Cape
Town to Britain to the United States.
As a foreigner entering a new country, she writes about assembling
herself “into photographs and signatures” and leaving behind all
uncertainties, and many foreign or expat readers no doubt understand
exactly what she means. During a conversation with her mother, who lives
seven hours’ time difference away, Baderoon fears they will never see
each other again. As a resident in America, she observes the man with
the snow plow and her husband, noting the dialogue and silence between
them as the man talks about the D.U.I. he just got and promises to find
a replacement if he is unable to do the snow this year. For the rest of

REVIEW OF UNEXPECTED LIGHT
By C. E. Chaffin
Diminuendo Press
Reviewed by Wil Hough
There is nothing quite so telling of an author as a poetry collection. A
novel is of the imagination. An essay merely provides a point of view,
often not even that of the author. But a poem takes you back through the
eyes of the author straight away into the very heart and soul of the
matter. A poetry chapbook illuminates the deepest motivation of its
creator. However that, in itself, is not necessarily a good thing. For

THE MAGGIE VALLEY TRILOGY: CHILDREN’S/YA BOOK REVIEWS ON MYSPACE
Trilogy novels by Kerry Madden
Reviewed by Kathryn Magendie
Kerry Madden has captured mountain life in a charming three-book series
that will capture young reader’s hearts … adults can read these books as
well and will be entertained by the whimsy and magic that is the Weems
family. The books are set in the early 60’s in the Smoky Mountain region
of Western North Carolina. Madden does a good job of centering her
characters in this early time, but as well, leaving the reader with a
timeless feel that can span the ages. For the rest of the review, visit
