FROM THE PUBLISHER’S PEN
By Barbara Quinn

Dear Readers,

How can you not feel joy at the arrival of spring? The days are growing
longer and there’s an undercurrent of warmth even when the wind picks
up. What a relief it is to see the bright sunlight casting a different
angle across my desk, an angle that I know signifies the change of
season. The buds are poking through the ground and along the branches.
There’s an earthy smell in my warming garden. Spring is a lucky and
lovely season. No matter what your situation, grab a little sunlight and
try to enjoy a few moments for what they are. May there be some rebirth
and renewal in your life. May there be peace and stillness waiting for
you.

To aid you in your journey, why not read the new spring issue of The
Rose & Thorn from cover to cover? Our pages are guaranteed to inspire
you and to allow you to find a little peace, humor, and stillness. I
always learn much from reading the words of the authors who choose to
publish with us, and I have fun doing it. What more could you ask for?

Everyone, please join me in applauding Co-Managing Editor Kat Magendie
on the publication of her terrific book, Tender Graces. It’s due out
soon from BelleBooks, and is not to be missed. I had the honor of being
a pre-reader for this book and I can assure you that Kat’s novel is
unique, and is a fun and poignant read filled with rich language that
will have you smiling. Kat’s words are a dose of liquid spring.

Here’s to finding a little spring in all you do.

Barbara

NOTES ABOUT OUR COVER
by Liam Wilkinson

FLORA by Evelyn De Morgan

Whilst studying her craft, the British Pre-Raphaelite artist Evelyn De
Morgan (1855 – 1919) would periodically travel between her uncle’s home
in Florence and her own in England. In Italy, she would be surrounded by
great art, such as the masterpieces of Sandro Botticelli that had a
profound affect on her own developing style. She would return to her
homeland just as the English spring was bursting into colour. It was,
perhaps, on such an occasion that De Morgan painted Flora, the goddess
of flowers and bringer of spring. A fine example of Pre-Raphaelite art,
yet heavily influenced by Botticelli, De Morgan’s Flora embodies the
essence of spring with its crisp colours, spring birds and the
Florentine flower pattern of the goddess’s robes, all set against the
backdrop of a Loquat tree. Though clearly painted with Botticelli’s
Primavera and Birth of Venus in mind (note the similarity between
Flora’s golden locks and those of Botticelli’s Venus), De Morgan’s Flora
stands as one of the most stunning depictions of the goddess in
mythological art.

LOOKING BEHIND THE GUIDELINES

Would you like to know what R&T is really looking for? Maybe you've
submitted to us in the past, followed all the guidelines, but received a
rejection anyway. Or maybe you're considering a submission but don't
know which of your pieces would be right for us.

You should check out Roses & Thorns where R&T's prose and poetry editors
provide writing tips, observations, and an inside look at what does and
does not make the cut. You'll also find recommended resources for
writers, book reviews, and interviews with well-known authors.

Even better, you can comment and ask questions about posts. Editors will
check back regularly and reply.
