FROM THE PUBLISHER’S PEN
By Barbara Quinn

Dear Readers,

Enjoy the Summer 2009 Issue!

I didn't want to disappear without saying a few words to all of the
loyal followers and readers we've had at The Rose & Thorn over more than
a decade. Some of you have been here since the beginning, back in 1997,
when this place was a dream of a couple of writers who felt the net was
the perfect place to gather and spread the words of writers, beginning
and accomplished. We haven't changed that mission, but we have grown
over the years and developed a readership and place in the literary
community. My thanks go out to an incredible staff of volunteers who
keep this place shining, and to all the people who submit their works to
us.

I'm honored to have worked with the volunteers who have spent time here,
with those who continue to keep us going, and with those we have
published.

Luckily for us all, Angie Ledbetter and Kat Magendie are taking over the
stewardship of the zine. I'm not able to continue due to a host of
obligations and work that require my attention, so this is my last issue
as Publisher and Managing Editor.

I'm moving to the role of a grateful "Founder" of the zine. And I'm
looking forward to eventually having more time to spend on my own
writing.

This place is floating in my blood, pumping through my heart, and
forever feeding my soul. You can always reach me at BAQu-@aol.com.

Thanks for your support through the years. You are in the terrific hands
of Angie, Kat, and the caring staffers of the zine.

Gratefully yours,

Barb

NOTES ABOUT OUR COVER
by Liam Wilkinson

BOY READING ON A HARBOUR'S EDGE
by William Strang

Scottish-born William Strang (1859 – 1921) was renowned for his etchings
and engravings as well as his portraits of such notable figures as
Thomas Hardy and Henry Newbolt. ‘Boy Reading on a Harbour’s Edge’,
however, is a departure from Stang’s usual style, and what better way to
welcome the summer than with this serene depiction of a sleepy harbour?

Despite being a master of detail when it came to etching and engraving,
Strang brought a necessary simplicity to this charming scene. The
brushwork, particularly in the shadows of the boats and the ripples on
the water, appears effortless in its uncomplicated, delicate strokes.
Minute details in the seafront buildings, and even on the face of the
boy perched on the harbour wall, have been disregarded so as to
complement the tranquility of the scene – a technique favoured by the
Impressionist artists of the latter half of the 19th century.

It’s surely impossible to defy the allure of this peaceful image - the
dazzling light of the seaside sun, the gentle creak of the boats on the
sea, the hint of salt in the air and the faint sound of church bells in
the distance – summer, it would seem, has arrived.

Liam

LOOKING BEHIND THE GUIDELINES

Would you like to know what R&T is really looking for? Maybe you've
submitted to us in the past, followed all the guidelines, but received a
rejection anyway. Or maybe you're considering a submission but don't
know which of your pieces would be right for us.

You should check out Roses & Thorns where R&T's prose and poetry editors
provide writing tips, observations, and an inside look at what does and
does not make the cut. You'll also find recommended resources for
writers, book reviews, and interviews with well-known authors.

Even better, you can comment and ask questions about posts. Editors will
check back regularly and reply.
