Movie Profiles & Premiums Supplement. October 28, 2005
Brought to you by http://www.things-and-other-stuff.com

This is going to be a brief supplement, just a little Happy Halloween to
you! With that thought in mind I recalled that I had a few unused
submissions from contributor Susan M. Kelly sitting in one of my e-mail
folders, and sure enough one of them was Bela Lugosi
(http://www.things-and-other-stuff.com/movies/profiles/bela-lugosi.htm)!
You can't get much more into the spirit of the season than with ole
Dracula himself, so be sure to check out the profile by Susan that I've
just added to the site.

Staying with Bela for a second, I also had a couple of still photos
featuring him that I had bought and never had the opportunity to list
for sale at auction. They are beat and I probably have too much money
into them, but I've made them available in my eBay store for $25.00 and
$35.00. I just composed those listings tonight, so there's a better
than average shot that they're still available, feel free to have a
look...feel free to buy!

Even after all of the blowout sales I do still have some movie items
left and will be relisting them (eventually) in the Movie Collectibles
category of my eBay store
(http://stores.ebay.com/Collecting-Old-Magazines_Movie-Collectibles).
I've decided that I'll be looking to buy movie collectibles for resale
in the future as well, so don't be surprised to see some new auctions
cropping up every so often.

A little over a year ago in this newsletter I took a look at a few of my
favorite horror movies
(http://www.things-and-other-stuff.com/issues/movie-newsletter-2-14.htm)
in response to a Top 100 list that another web site had published. And
then in the following issue profile contributor Scott D. O'Reilly
replied
(http://www.things-and-other-stuff.com/issues/movie-newsletter-2-15.htm)
with a list of his own favorite classic horror flicks. I've included
the links if you're interested in looking back at those lists (they're
in the opening section of the newsletters before all of the Profiles and
Photo ID Guides). I'll still keep "Dawn of the Dead" at the top of my
list, though I've also become partial to the recent flood of Asian
horror films being released on DVD over here and would have to recommend
"A Tale of Two Sisters" as a top fiver as well now. Scott's list
inspired me to hunt down the excellent "I Walked with a Zombie" on
VHS--it's recently been released on DVD as part of the Val Lewton Horror
Collection. And I can't find it in the archives, so maybe it was just
in an e-mail that I never published, but Diana Savage also told me about
some of her favorite horror films and gave me a Jean Rollin primer that
led me to hunt down the very enjoyable "Grapes of Death" on DVD. (PS
Diana, I ordered "Fascination" from a fellow eBayer, but it's been
backordered for two months now...I'm trying to be patient but may need
to request a refund soon!). I only mention all of this because it
definitely illustrates the point of these lists, which in my mind, is to
point out hidden gems and introduce us all to new movies. I think what
I'm going to do is cut & paste this paragraph of the e-mail to the blog
and cross my fingers that some of you reply there with some of your
favorites.

I've been updating the blog a few times per week as planned. Thanks to
those of you who have signed up as members--I haven't had time to get
very chatty with it as of yet, but I will. So far more than half of the
entries are "Auction Notes" entries meant to point you in the direction
of my latest eBay listings. I've also been posting any updates to the
site over there, for example, I'll post a link to Susan's Bela Lugosi
profile there. The blog is light on site updates because most of the
work I've been doing on things-and-other-stuff.com lately has been
maintenance type stuff (ie: updated navigation, adding specific meta
tags to pages, updating old blue backgrounds to white, etc.) that
there's really no reason to inform anybody about anyway. Everybody's
welcome to visit the blog, bookmark the blog, or join the blog (I
believe the link to do this is on the right side of the page under the
links).

Most of my recent work has been on collecting-old-magazines.com. It's
been slow as I've been doing all of the writing myself, but little by
little that site is growing. I'll be launching a newsletter for that
site, Random Issues: Collecting Old Magazines in the 20th Century, on
November 30. Thanks to those who have signed up for that. That
newsletter will basically update what I've been doing with that site
with a "Random Issue" special feature: I'm going to dissect a specific
issue of a random (well, somewhat random) magazine, which will give
readers a look back in time in terms of both history and the publication
in question. Well, that's the plan for starters at least!

Oh, one last thing before I go. I subscribe to a ton of newsletters
about e-commerce, website construction and general internet trends
because I'd be otherwise completely ignorant on all of these subjects
(well, maybe not the e-commerce) and I received one today about general
trends with internet shoppers. Basically how there are still a lot of
people scared to give out their info over the internet, and it named one
of the top reasons as fear of spyware slowing down their computers. My
own computer is about six years old and I'm scared it's going to
break-down or blow-up any time now, however one program I really credit
with extending it's life is Ad-Aware. I run this a ridiculous amount of
times on my computer (at least once, sometimes twice per day) and it's
the only thing that gets me running somewhat smoothly again after
spending any serious amount of time searching eBay (why that is, I do
not know). They have versions you pay for, but I've been using their
free version for about three years now, so if you want to check it out
I've provided the link to download it at download.com
com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3003-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1).
Please note, this is only a recommendation, I've found that everyone's
computer is different and have had mine scrambled a couple of times
downloading reputable programs recommended by friends--I kind of relate
it to how I'm allergic to penicillin, it doesn't mean penicillin is bad,
just bad for me, so in other words, don't just download on my word, be
sure to read all of the info about AdAware before deciding to use it.

That's it for now, I hope you're well, stay well, and have a Happy
Halloween!
