TODAY'S TIP(s): COMPUTER Department
Auto Start & Services

How to Have a Program Start Automatically

The Problem: you want to save time by having a certain program start
automatically every time you start your computer.

The Solution: create a start-up setting for it by...

1) Clicking the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar
& Start Menu.

2) Click the Start Menu Programs tab.

3) Click the Add button, and then click the Browse button.

4) Locate the program you want to start, and then click it.

5) Click the Next button, and then scroll down to your StartUp folder
and double-click it.

6) Type the name that you want to see on the StartUp menu, and then
click the Finish button.

7) If Windows prompts you to choose an icon, click one, and then click
the Finish button.

The next time you start your computer, the program you added should
start automatically.

My tip for today is to keep your computer safe by installing a virus
scanner, spyware detector (or two), and a firewall apart from the one
that comes with windows. And keep them up to date.

Tim says: I agree. I am using CA Security Suite for the PC (I don't use
the SPAM module.)

I use Intego's Virus Barrier for the Mac.

MAC TIP(s)

* If a program freezes, hold down option, apple (command) and escape
keys at the same time. This will allow you to just quit the program and
nothing else.

* To quickly change your desktop picture, click and hold on the desktop,
a sub menu will drop down. Click "change desktop background" to take you
directly to your folder of pictures or patterns. Choose, save and bingo!
you're done.

Tim says: thanks, Phyllis...by any chance do you (or someone else) know
how to get rid of an item in the "SERVICES" pull down? The first item in
mine is "Chinese Text Converter". Now, I gotta tell you, that is HOT
ITEM in my everyday work flow. By golly, if I live to be 1,000, I will
probably never -- EVER need to use that nifty utility. When I find the
app in the wherever folder, and try to trash it, however, I am told I
can't send it to the trash because it is open. So, I suspect it is
loaded at the boot. Very frustrating.

And -- yes, Phyllis -- your Mac tips wil always be welcomed.

Make Color-Coded Maps

The "Do-It-Yourself" State Maps

monarch.tamu.edu/~maps2/

web site lets you create color-coded maps of the United States and
individual states (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). Simply click on the
state you want to make a map of and then fill in the text boxes, select
counties and states, and color them using the options in the drop-down
boxes. Click the Draw The Map button to see the finished result.

The finished maps can be printed out, or downloaded as GIF files.

TODAY'S COMPUTER GRIN:

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called John the computer
guy, to come over. John clicked a couple of buttons and solved the
problem.

He gave me a bill for a minimum service call. As he was walking away, I
called after him, "So, what was wrong?" He replied, "It was an ID ten T
error." I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, "An,
ID ten T error? What's that ... in case I need to fix it again?"

John grinned.... "Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?"

"No," I replied.

"Write it down," he said, "and I think you'll figure it out"

So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T
