| Traffic congestion and the climate

=v= This letter (whose author is, or was, a subscriber to this
list) suggests that replacing signals with roundabouts will
reduce waits, thereby saving fuel, thereby saving the world from
global warming. Yet this ignores the impact of induced traffic
in cities as dense as San Francisco, whereby the reduced waits
simply encourage more cars, which then pollute more (including
more carbon emissions).

=v= This argument ("roundabouts reduce global warming") was
in response to a letter about simplifying traffic lights ("to
reduce global warming") which was itself about an article about
a stupid program to buy a carbon-trading sticker ("to feel less
guilty about global warming"). I'm getting pretty sick of this
specious exploitation of a truly serious problem.
