Level: All
Here are lots of cool pictures of ghost towns in the western United
States. Ghost towns are towns that were once filled with people, but now
all the people are gone. The people came to find gold or other valuable
minerals, but left when all the gold had been mined.
YOUR TURN:

1848. You can also send ghost town virtual postcards, or download ghost
town screensavers and wallpaper.

-Dissent, Decent, Descent-
These words sound similar, but have different meanings:
DISSENT (noun) means to disagree with someone:
-There was much DISSENT about the idea of going to war.
DECENT (adjective) relates to standards of morality:
-I thought he was a DECENT man, but he was really an arrogant and
dishonest person.
Another meaning of DECENT (adjective) is "adequate:"
-I make a DECENT salary at my job. (It's not a great salary, but it's
okay.)
DESCENT (noun) means to go in a downward direction:
-The plane started its DESCENT into Los Angeles.

-Between a Rock and a Hard Place-
If you are BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, it means that you have to
make a decision, but both choices are unpleasant or difficult.
-Cynthia was BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE. Her boyfriend had proposed
to her, but she didn't want to get married. If she said yes, she would
not be happy, but if she said no, her boyfriend would probably break up
with her.

TODAY'S GRAMMAR LESSON

-Articles (A, An, The)-
One of the rules about when to use A/AN or THE is:
-If BOTH the speaker/writer and listener/reader know what is being
referred to, use THE:
-"Can I borrow THE car tonight, Dad"?
-"Have you seen THE newspaper?"
-If NEITHER the speaker/writer or listener/reader know what is being
referred to, or ONLY ONE person knows what is being referred to, use
A/AN:
-I heard that you once saw A UFO (only the listener/reader knows what is
being referred to).
-I'm going to buy A new car next week (neither person knows what is
being referred to).
Can you write more examples of these kinds of sentences?

-The Art Thief-
Recently, a man in Paris almost got away with stealing several paintings
from the Louvre. However, he was captured only 2 blocks away when his
van ran out of gas. When asked how he could plan such a complicated
crime and then make such a stupid mistake, he replied: "I had no Monet
to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh."

Practice your pronunciation with this tongue twister:
Of all the felt I ever felt,
I never felt a piece of felt
which felt as fine as that felt felt,
