Level: Pre-Intermediate to High-Intermediate

Here is a great site for students who are looking for online English
exercises. You'll find lots of grammar, vocabulary, and reading
exercises. In the reading section, you'll find a story about sharks, a
detective story, and a story about urban legends. You'll need to have
the FLASH 5 software installed for some of the exercises.

If you're not sure which exercises are best for you, take the DIAGNOSTIC
QUIZ (use the link at the top of the page). After you finish the quiz,
you'll be taken to the best exercises for you.

   TODAY'S VOCABULARY LESSON
==================================

-1000 MOST COMMON ENGLISH WORDS-

*******************************************************************

*******************************************************************

Do you know what THE most common word in English is?

Click on the link above to view a list of the 1000 most common words in
English. This is a good way to check your vocabulary level. Find words
that you don't know and then check your dictionary. Then add them to
your vocabulary list.

==================================
       TODAY'S IDIOM
==================================

    -TIP OF THE ICEBERG-

(This idiom doesn't have anything to do with the Titanic.)

When you see an iceberg in the ocean, you can only see its tip. Most of
the iceberg is below the water. So we use this idiom when we mean that
we can only see part of something and there is a lot more that we can't
see.

"The scandals in the government are only the TIP OF THE ICEBERG."
(There are a lot more scandals that we don't know about.)

==================================
     TODAY'S GRAMMAR LESSON
==================================

-A FEW/FEW, A LITTLE/LITTLE-

These words are used to answer the questions "How many?" or "How much?"

A FEW (for countable nouns) is used to answer in a positive way:

"There are A FEW days left before the deadline."
(There is enough time left before the deadline.)

FEW is used to answer in a negative way:

"There are FEW days left before the deadline."
(There is NOT very much time left before the deadline.)

A LITTLE (for uncountable nouns) is used to answer in a positive way:

"He has A LITTLE time before class starts."
(He has enough time to do something before class starts.)

LITTLE is used to answer in a negative way:

"He has LITTLE time before class starts."
(He does NOT have enough time to do something before class starts.)

Can you write more sentences using A FEW/FEW and A LITTLE/LITTLE?

    TODAY'S TONGUE TWISTER
==================================

Practice your pronunciation with this tongue twister:

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts,
with stoutest wrists and loudest boasts,
he thrusts his fist against the posts
and still insists he sees the ghosts.
