Level: All

Archie Comics has been part of the American culture for many years.
Archie and his friends live in Riverdale. At this site, you can visit
Riverdale and explore lots of fun and interesting places. Get on the bus
or train and follow the links to visit the arcade, high school, salon,
and lots more. Search carefully for the hidden links in the pictures. By
following the links, you'll be able to read the Archie comic books, play
games, find jokes, read fashion tips, and more.

YOUR TURN:

Is Riverdale like your hometown? Does it have the same places that are
in your hometown? What are some special places in your hometown?

   TODAY'S VOCABULARY LESSON
==================================

          -HOMONYMS-

English has lots of homonyms (words that have the same pronunciation,
but different spelling and meaning). For example, MEAT is a homonym for
MEET.

Can you write the homonyms for these words?
(Answers are at the bottom of the newsletter.)

-Whale
-Weed
-Whose
-Bored
-You
-Flower
-Horse
-Tents
-Sent
-Wait
-Flea
-Prince

==================================
       TODAY'S IDIOM
==================================

    -A SHOT IN THE DARK-

This sounds like a pretty dangerous idiom, but it just means that you
take a guess when you don't the facts.

FOR EXAMPLE:

-"How did you know I was a baseball player?"

-"It was just A SHOT IN THE DARK."
(I didn't know, but I took a guess.)

A related idiom in IN THE DARK. If you are IN THE DARK about something,
you don't know anything about it.

FOR EXAMPLE:

-"I'm IN THE DARK about the plans for the new school."
(I don't know anything about the plans for the new school.)

==================================
     TODAY'S JOKE
==================================

                 A SIMPLE OPERATION

A man was seen running down the hall of the hospital just before his
operation.

"What's the matter?" he was asked.

He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation, don't
worry, I'm sure it will be all right.'"

"She was just trying to comfort you, what's so frightening about that?"

"She wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the doctor!"

QUESTION: Why was the man worried?

==================================
    TODAY'S TONGUE TWISTER
==================================

Practice your pronunciation with this tongue twister:

I need not your needles, they're needless to me;
For kneading of noodles, 'twere needless, you see;
But did my neat knickers but need to be kneed,
I then should have need of your needles indeed.
